Ho Heed of Howling.

Some few Democrats with a view to making politio&l capital have raised howl beoause the oontraot for election booths was granted to a Lafayette firm instead of the Coffin Faotory Company. Tho howl is rammed down their throats at onoe by tho statement that tho Coffin Faotory people never wanted the oontraot. They only submitted a bid upon tho repeated requested of the Board of Commiosioners who desired to lot the business to a homo firm if possr bio. If this is not enough to satisfy all perhaps the following figures may: Tho Coffin Faotory would only bid on the booths and ballot boxes. Their bid for theso won §393. Besides these things the electiou law requires railings and chutes for every precinot Tho lowest bid received from any firm for the railingB was $63 and for the chutes SG2.50, making a total with the Coffin Factory's bid on iKixee and booths of $508.50. The Folkemer outfit including all sentials only oost 8413.22 almost 8100 less than the noxt lowest bid. Tho Oof fin Faotory people do not rogrot tho loss of tho oontraot in the least as it would be really an inconvenienoe to them at present when thoir regular business is booming and requiring all their attention.

WHERE TO BORE

The People of Linden Believe That Their Town Should be the Base. To the Kdlior of Tlio Journal.

While I am in deep sympathy with everything that looks toward the better ing of tho people and tho tiuanoial interests of our county in every legitimate way possible, I must say that the move that seems to be on foot now among certain capitalists of your city to bore for gas in or close to the town of New Market is one that in my judgment should not be carried, 'ihe faot that one or more wells have been sunk there and a pocket of vegetable or marsh gas found, is no evidence or guarantee that gas will be found. Anyone not acquainted with the facts can become thoroughly posted in the naturo of the gas found at New Market if they will take the trouble to look into our couuty map. There they will find that in anoie^t times there existed a lake in the southern portion of this oounty and that the town of New Market is located iu or near the very center of that 1-iko whoso outlines and dimensions have been clearly set forth in the map of this oounty. In the long ages that this lake existed and accumulated vegetable and animal matter, depositing the same until it was filled with the decayed matter, can account for all the gas that is found at this time by those who sink wells for water, and again it is not the history of those who have put down terra gas wells in the whole range of the gas belt, that any pocket gas was fouud where a terra gas well was a sucoess. In looking over the gas belt wo find that it lies in a certain portion of

Indiana and runs across the State from tho southeast to tho southwost, as evidenced from the wells that have been put down and have proved a success, both'in Indiana and Illinois. Now if your local capitalists or others will take a rule and lay on the map of the State from a point in northeastern Indiana say Kokomo, to a point in Illinois where thoy have wells, say Mattoon, they will ee in a moment whero they had better invest their money in an effort to secure the much coveted terra gas. In other words thoy will see that at tho town of Linden or perhaps a little south of it is tho place to put down a well, and be insi le of the limits of the great gas belt, which has never failed to give up her treasures to those who seek them within her limits. No one ha6 ever been able yet to find gas on tho Wabash river, from one end of it to the other, nor will thoy for reasons: No one has ever been able to find terra gas outside of tho gas belt, or outside of a certain limited width of oountry ranging from 18 to 25 miles in width, but inside of that, as a rule wherovor wells have been put down they have boon a suocess. Now lot your peoplo who aro int rested in securing gas before Winter olosos come up and see us. They wont to New Market and they will find us ready to moet them half way in the matter of gas with our encouragement and money. Let us hear from you.

THE HALLETT UASE.

A Statement by John Hewkirk, Patbtr of Mrs. Haliett. To tho Editor of The Journal:

In your issue af September 20, under the head of "A Cruel Imprisonment" you mako statements in reference to tho oonduot of Newkirk's and one Ettor whioh are wholly untrue. 1. E. P. Hallot was not adjudged to be of unsound mind and sent to the asylum at his own roquost, but beoause ho was aotually of unsound mind for the protection or his own family in particular and tho publio in general. 2. When Haliett was sent homo from the asylum on a furlough he was kept until his condition became alarming, and after he had greatly mistreated and abused his wife. 3. Mr. Newkirk h'id only taken that interest in Mrs. Haliett, his daughter, that any humane father would take iu a child. While he has tho deepest sympathy for Mr. Hallott in his uflliotion he can not, and will not, suffer his daughter and her family to bo abused by ono who is not responsible for his own acts.

Lastly, Mr. Haliett is not a sane man, as the person who gave the information to

well knows. Before a

guardian could bo appointed by tho court, tho court had to lie convinoed by evidence that ho was and is actually of unsound mind. The very idea of a man being adjudged of unBound mind by the court, and a guardian being appointed for him, yet being of sound mind, is more than I can comprehend.

The affidavit and testimony on which tho judgemont is based are false, or olso he is bolioved to be of unsound mind and is now prop«rly in tho insane asylum. Ou tUo 18th of September Mrs. Haliett received word from Superintendent, O. E. Wright, of tho insane asylum in which ho states thoro is no porcoptable change in Mr. H. mentally or physically.

The Newkirks would only bo too glad to learn of Mr. Hullett's complete reoovery so that ho could bo restored to the bosom of his family.
