John ... theson of Christopher R*OJ, the niai::iK.-r of the theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, was very Illiterate r-'!imn. with strong dramatic instincts.
From his inability to sjvuk njion the stage lie originated tho silent harleimin. anil by mere dumb action could rival the Jjower and pathos of the most accomplished tragwlian.
I'ruviini-- to this, aud, indetxl, for some time ttftunvard, harlequin was a sp^.-nk-ing part, and r)n\1d Uarrick played hini as such in the theatre at Goodman Fields. It was in the year

Jackson, in s]waking of Rich's wonderful ubilities as a pantomiinist, says: "(Jn his last revival of 'The Sorcerer' I saw him practice the liaU-hing of harlequin by the heat of the sun, in order to point it out to Miles, who, though excellent in the lino of dumb significance, found it no easy matter to retain the lesson Rich had taught him. This certainly was a masterpiece in dumb show. From tho first chipping of the egg. his receiving of motion, his feoling of tho ground, his etnnding upright to his quick harlequin trip round the empty shell, through tho whole progression, every limb had its tongue and every motion a voice, which sjioke with most miraculous organ to tho understanding aud sensation of tho olwvtrvors."

Clurlce Dickens was the greatest novelist who ever lived. No author before or since hie time has won the fame that he achieved, and his works are even more popular to-day than during his lifetime. Ttiey abound in wit, humor, pathos, masterly delineation of character, vivid descriptions of places and incidents thrilling and skillfully wrought plots. Eacl book is intensely interesting. No homeeliould
be without a set of these great and remarkable works. Not to have read them is to he far behind the age in which wo live. The set of Dickens' works which wo offer
