Mrs. S. P. Graham Takes Eight Doses of Mornhiuo With Almost atal Ecsulta, Last night about 10 o'clock Mm. 8. P. Graham was found in an uuoousoious condition at lier ^honie ou south Groen street. An it was evident that Bhe was suffering from the effects of poison, aid was at once summoned and all restoratives applied. Dr. Jones was callodand at length pronounced his patient out of danger, while the neighbors were working with her, Mrs. Graham doolared that she hail takeu eight doses of morphiuo with suicidal intout but as she was under the inllueuoe of the drug to some extent the statement may have been somewhat erroneous. Mrs. Graham has been in poor health for some time and it is probable that she took the ]oihou while laboring undor a temporary aberration of tho mind. It was a vory close call indeed and if aid had not appeared so promptly it is ccrtuiu the results would have been fatal. Airs. Graham is the wife of H. P. Gralmui a traveling insurance agent.

Aii Old Fiishlonod Belfry.

bmce bells havo been used to call congregations to worship a tower or l.ell gable has formed au important part in most churches. Sometimes this tower is quite separate from tho rest of tho church. This is often so In Italy, and also in tho ease of somo English churches. In hilly countries tho church was often placed in a sheltered valley, and tho belfry perched on tho top of somo height near at hand. This was tho enso of St. Feve, in Cornwall, and at some places in Scotland. Instead of building a belfry it was not unusual in Scotland to hang tho bell upou somo convenient tree. Two hundred years ago this rude contrivance might often havo been seen there. —Exchange.

Nut So Dangerous a* 11c Looks. Because a man has heavy eyebrows, a hairy face, a burly frame and a strong voice do not thenco infer that lie is fearless and resolute. Pluck and determination do not depend upon physical conformation. Your man of mighty brawn, bull necked and bull chested, "bearded liko a pard" and deep voiced as a bassoon, may bo as arrant a cur as ever turned ttdl on danger. Who has not at some time or other seen a coarse, swaggering giant, with tho bone and muscle of three ordinary men, cowed and silenced by an indomitablo little fellow half his own size? As a rule tho most formidable looking specimens of humanity are by no means the most terrible.— New York Ledger.

To Itamedy tho Nolo* of Engine*. Many suggestions have been made for remedying tho vibration and noise attendant on the working of the big engines which are employed to run dynamos. A plan which hus given great satisfaction is to build hair felt iuto tho foundations of tho engine. An electrio company lias just had one of its ninety horse [xiwur engines removed from its foundations, which wero then taken up to tho depth of four feet. A layer of felt five inches thick was then placed on the foundations and run up two feet on all sides, and on tho top of this the brickwork was built up. The cost of tho alterations was about $300.—New York Letter.

BABY OWNED THE CAR.

A IIluo Eyctl Tot Who Cliurmed All tho I'HHHengorH mid Employe*. There was a baby in the railway car tho other day. Ii waa not an unusual child, but it had a decidedly bright face and pretty ways. For the first few miles she wus very quiet, and her blue eyed looked uround in wonderment, for evidently it was the little ouo's first ride on the ears.

Then as she bet'ame used to the roar and rumble the baby proclivities asserted themselves, aud she began to play with her father's mustache. At first the father and mother were the only parties interested, but swii a youug lady in IUI adjacent seat nudged her escort and directed his attention to tho laughing child.

He looked up, remarked that It was a pretty baby and tried to look unconcerned, but it was noticed that his eyes wandered back to the sj*ot occupied by the happy family, and ho commenced to sinilo.

Tlip, babv pulled the hair of an old lady in front, who turned around savagely and glared at the father with a look that plainly said, "Nuisances should be left at home."

But she caught sight of tli laughing eyes of tho baby, and when slio turned back she seemed pleased about something. Several others had become interested in the child by this time—business men and young clerks, old ladies and girls—ami when the baby hands grasped the largo silk hat of her father and placed it on her own head it made such a comical picture that tho old gentleman across the way, unable to restrain himself, burst out into a loud guffaw, and then looked sheepishly out of tho window, as if asluuncd to bo caught doing such an unmanly thing.

Before another fivo minutes he was playing peuk-u-Too across tho IUBIO with tho baby, and everyone was envying him.

The ubiquitous young man, ever on tho move, passed through, and wus at a loss to account for the frowns of everybody. He had failed to notice the baby.

Tho brakeman looked in from his post on the platform and smiled. Tho pnier boy found no custom til! ho had sjioken to the baby and jingled his pocket of change for her edification.

Tho conductor caught the fever and chucked the little one under the chin, while the old gentleman across the aisle forgot to pass up his ticket, so interested was lie playing jieek-u-boo.

The old lady in front relaxed, and divinto her reticule unearthed a brilliant lug I red

pippin and presents! it bashfully to the little ono, who, in response, put her chubby arms around the donor's neck and pressed her rosy little mouth to the old lady's cheek.

It brought bark a flood of remembrances to that withered heurt, and a handkerchief was s^'ii to brush first this way and then that, as if to catch a falling tear.

The train sited on and pulled into tho station where the baby, with her parents, were to leave the car. A look of regret ouiio over every face. Tho old genth man asked if he couldn't kiss it just once the old lady rettine-d tho caress she had received and tho baby moved toward tho door, shaking a by-by over the shoulder of her papa, to which everyone re«|ionded, including the newsboy, who emphasized Ids farewell with a wave of his hut.

Tho passengers ru !:ed to the side where the baby got off and watched till alio turned out of sight at the other end of tho station, shaking by-byes all tho time. Then they lapsed Into silence. Tliey missed that baby and not one of tlieni would be unwilling to acknowledge it. The little one's presence had let a rift of sunshine into every heart, warm or cold, in thatcar.—Orphans' Friend.
