scant holidays this working nation gives itself, and that is Labor day, the first Monday in September. With each year it becomes moro and more generally and impressively observed. On that day working people throughout the Union will rawt annually to note tho progress they have mode in a year—progress in intelligence, wisdom and material prosperity.

THE Grtvnoastlo Times and Banner have oonsolidatod and the paper hereafter will be known as the Banner and Times. M. J, Beckett, of the Banner, will be the sole proprietor of the combination. A few weeks since Mr. Beokett bought tho Democrat, the third Republican paper. By the new arrangement tfie field is occupied by but one Republican paper. This is a most sensible move and all concerned are to be congratulated, espocialy tbe Republicans of Putnam county.

Having taken a brief rest, Senator Bluir is up again with a joint resolution. This time it in u* provido for an international congress, preliminary to an international alliance, whoso abject shall bo the Kupjn«sion of the »alo of fireanus and Hi toxica ting liquors to uncivilized peoples also the suppression of slavery. Other schemes widely comprehensive in their nature were included in this joint resolution, such as the establishment of common schools and international courts and the disarmament of nations. This weighty resolution was naturally biid on tbo table by tbe senate.

TimnF. is one Democrat in Crawfordsvillo who says that Secretary Blaine rocoivod his ideas of reciprocity from Vory Brookflhire. He says that Brookshire made a spoeoh in Congress and throe months afterwards the Secretary, borrowing tho scheme from Brookshire, havo it to tho world as his own. Acoording to tho view? of our Democratic friend Blaino is nearly as great a man as Brookshiro. Our friend must bo either mistakon or Vory has ohanged his position, as in his speeoh at the oourt houso not many days ago ho ridiculed Blaino's ideas of reoiprocity.

TEE Democrats are engaged in one of their strong filibustering movements to 'koep another nigger out of Congress." It will not avail them, however, has the ediot has gone forth that tho legislative soat of one of ihe F. F. Y.'»

must be oocupiou by a dawer Bkinned but muoh smarter Juan. In other words, the Houso wants to dooide that Professor John M. Langston next to Fred Douglas the ablest colored man in America, and not E. 0. Venable, toboooo manufacturer, is entitled to represent the Petersburg, or "Blaok District," of Virginia, in Congress. Thedeoision willbemado, too, notwithstanding the filibustered just so soon us Speaker Reed goto his hand in at "counting a quorum."
