Street ear conductors may bo impudent, ill natured and disobliging, but tho .St. Louis women have found a way to get even with them that is little less than sublime. When they desire to get off tho car the ladies give a conductor a vigorous punch in the back with their umbrellas. St. Louis conductors' coats are said to lie in ribbons, their spines black and blue, and life a burden to them generally from this piecing custom, but the women smile serenely and go their way.

Disinterested outsiders may be i«:rmit-U-d to recommend Chicago to stop quarreling about whether the World's fair shall lie in tho heart of the city, where everybody can reach it, or in a suburb where the street car and railroad companies can tike a wh.vk at it and make their pile out of it. The suburban advocates should pause before they insist on biting off more than they can masticate.
