TRAPPING MUSKRATS.

I to« UH* VOX Hunter* In the Maryland Mmnt.cH Secure Tliofr Prey.

A visit to a munkrattlng village, (is tho scattering cabins of the trnppors along the borders of Fishing buy, Maryland, are called, wil1 be a revelation to tho stranger. The cabins are rude and have barely a habitable up]earanco. The occupants are squatters, and the materials of which their cabins are built have lieen appropriated from the nearest tract of timber land. The trap[ers and their families area wild and tattered race of beings, but, hnrdy and good natured. One peculiarity of a muskrattlng villago ls the large number of children that belong to each cabin.

Another feature of the community is a species of razor back hog that swells the population with its presence. This nondescript, member of the jxircine family has an ini|Kirtant mission to perform in these settlements, and he performs it with a wilL It is tho making away with the hundreds of surplus mnskrat carcsisses that accumulate, although tho flesh of the mnskrat forms an imixirtnnt article of food with the trapjwr and his family. As for that, however, eaters of mnskrat meat art- not confined to thi trapping villages of Kishing bay, for it is considered a great delir u-y by many au epicure in that land of terrapin aud canvas backs.

A remarkable thing about the razor back hogs of the mnskrat region is that, though they devour untold pounds of mnskrat meat every day, they never show the richness of their keeping by adding a single pound of flesh to their carnivorous bodies.

Tho mnskrat builds Its house so that, while it lias a couple of stories high and dry on the ground, the entrance to it Ls always under water. This entrance Is a long tunnel running from a point afoot or more below the water at low ti.lt" line to the ground floor of the house, which is always flooded. The muskrat's rejison for having this subterranean entrance to his dwelling place is that thereby he luw an exit or an entrance in time of danger that will not betray him to his enemies, either in his flight from home or in seeking refuge within its walls. But his instinct does not warn him against the trap his most cunning and persistent enemy places at this hidden entrance to his house, changing it from a way to safety int.) un avenue of certain death. This trap is a wooden IKIX, three feet long and six Inches in width and doptli.

In each raid Is a wire door, hung on hinges at the top. These doors rise at the slightest push on tho outside, but will not ojieii from the inside. Tho frap is sunk in tho water to the mouth of the muskrat's tunnel and anchored there, and whether the mnskrat is going out of his house or returning to it he is sure to walk into the trap. If he had timo tlie captive rodent could gnaw his way out of the lx»x, but before ho can free himself he will drown. A whole family of muskrats may bo taken in a single night in ono of these traps, and, as every trapper has out as many traps as he can attend to, the rat harvest which tliey reap every night is rich one.

Thero urc other ways by which tho mnskrat is pursued. In tho daytime tho hunters steal over tho marshes and jab long handled sjxvirs with sharp, barbed tines down through tlio roofs of the muskrnt houses. Sometimes a spear will impalo half a dozen rats us they liH cuddled together in their cozy nests Hunters with guns skirt tho marshes at night looking for muskrats with tho aid of jack lamps, but that method of hunting is followed more to indulge tlie sjforcing inclination of the hunter tlrnn to reap profit. Times of extraordinary tides ou the marshes are times always welcomed by the muskratter, for tlio rats are then forced from their houses, ill spite of the infallible instinct they are alleged to jiossess in foreseeing such calamitous liapjienings, and guarding against them by building their houses higher. They are conqielled to flee to tho open country and seek places of safety, which they rarely find, for tho trap pers and hunters have no difficulty In locating them, and so they aro given over to a wholesale slaughter. —Clothier and Furnisher.

Tho newspapers are now trying to find tho man who spent the mast days in ebel prisons during the lato war. So far as heard from yet Mr. E. W. Ware, of Bangor, is ahead, lie having suffered '3*1 days in Charleston, Columbia, Char lotte, Raleigh, Goldslxn-o and Gruensboro prisons.

One of the largest forests in the world stands on icf\ It is situated between nil and the Onhotsk sea. A well was recently dug in this region, whou it was found that at a depth of 110 meters the ground WHS still frozen.

11 Sltiifb Ho Stopped.

Something will havo to bo done to stop this drain. It, lias been figured out that thirty-six American girls have within the last few years married impecunious foreign princes, dulces and counts, and carried away to Eurapo upward of 1(44,000,000 cold, clammy cash. Nothing easier tlian to pass a general law forbidding American girls who marry abroad taking more than about $1,600 off with them. The government should confiscate tho remainder of their inheritance for the benefit of educational funds.—Nebraska Stato Journal.
