MONTGOMERY OOPNTY'S OROPS.
Tlio Opinion of a Man Who Has JBoen W est, iu Iowa and Other States, J. W. Goskill is now a morchant bnt ha was raised ou a farm and thinks ho knows a good Held of corn when ho sees it. llo has traveled through the oounty on tho liig Four road and on west into Iowa aud ho pronounces it as his doliberato opinion that tho oorn for a distance of 15 miles oast aud 15 miles west of Orawfor, wvillo is in ajvory mucli bettor condition than any ho has soon. "Tho prospeot," says ho, "ie that corn will bo high, but Montgomery county farmers will havo good crops and will reap tho beuelit of tlio high prioes. I predict that muoh of tho oorn in this county will averago CO bushels to tho acre, that is if what I can soo from the Big Four railway is on indication of the county. That will make trade flourish in tilts city and tho Fall trade will be good
Inspected the Water Plugs. Immediately after tho inspection of tho water plugs, by Chief Weidle, re ooiver MoCounoll wrote to tho company which manufactnred them informing thom of the result. Yesterday D. F. O'Biion, of Detroit, arrived in the oity and with Mr. MoCounoll made an inspection of tho plugs roported out of repair. Ho declared that they wore in good condition and capablo of good sorvico. Ho stated that ho ha'l a new and improved plug whioh ho desired to hnvo placed in tlio buBine portion of town aud called Boveral of tho Council togothor to introduce it to them. They informed him however thattlioy had no jurisdiction in the matter of purchasing aud referred him to Collin & Stanton, An effort will bo mado to havo them make tho purchaso, utilizing the plugs taken out in replacing a few leaky ones in tho suburbs.
Farmers douncil.
Don't forgot tlio Farmers' Council of Montgomery county will meet at tho fair ground in this city on next Thursday, the 28th of August. Tho exercises will bo entertaining aud instructive, and besides, tho social foatnres of tho occasion will furnish enjoyment for all who may attend. Remombor that everybody is invited to attend. It will bo an all-day picnic, Thoro will l)o papers read ou "Landlords and Teuuauts," and tho "J'onollts of Drainago iu Montgomery County." Tho committee appointed to observe tho growth of crops iu the several townships will also submit a report which will bo ijuito interesting.
Tho'Whitehead Oase.
Tho timo sot for tho trial of Mrs. Whitehead is drawing close aud arrangements nro being mado for it. Prosecutor Haywood will bo back iu timo for it, if it is tried which is very unlikely. Tho prosecution has fought it too long to try it first wlieu au easy loop hole of escape presents itself. It is generally believed that tho indictment against tho lady will be quashed ns a new ono can bo found at any subsequent time. Wo predict this will be the action of tho prosecution.
A Smooth Articlo.
Tho applicant for tho schools who has probably impressed nil with whom ho came in contact most favorably, is Professor Harrison, of Wabash. Ho is a thorough scholar and poutloman, dresses plainly and uoatly ond has cold blue oyo which looks like business. Ho is of medium height and wears only a mustacho. Ho laciiii ono thing quite common to goutlemen of his craft and thut is a patent possum smile for every word or gesture. Happily this is for tlio best.
Assessing tho Lands.
Tho viowors on the propose! Wm. F. Grimes gravel road on the Montgomery and Tippecanoe couuty lines aro here to day assessing the lands in Montgomery count}* which border upon it. Ihoy aro l*rauk AtchiuBon aud Harvoy Keser, of Tippecanoe, and Alf Flanuiuigau and J. N. Fulleuwider, of Montgomery, together with E. 1(. Vawtor, Surveyor of Tippecanoe couuty. Tho protests hnvo not IJCOU filed yot.
A Rocky Verdict.
The jury in tho case of,Simeon Bryant, charged witli assault nnd battery ou Win. Horny, brought in a verdict of guilty fixing tho penalty at ouo oent and costs amounting to aliout 850. No ono believes tho verdict to been just and it looks as though Mr. Thornton's view of tho jury of a justice's court were correct. They always lind guilty.
Rogmiontal Reunion.
The annual reuuiou of the 115th, 11Oth, 11 /th aud 118th ludiaua regiments will bo held at tho Criminal Court lioom, Indianapolis, on tho afternoon and evening of September 25. Loing State I uir week reduced faro will be given on all railroads.
