Few book* have ex miscd tsopnruicions an influence upon thi general development of ivonoinic thought as Malthus' "Essay on tho Principle of Population" exercised for three eonwentive generations. It appeared at th» right time, like all Inxiks which have had any influence at all, and it summed up ideas already current, in the minds of the wealth possessing minority. It was precisely when the ideas of equality and lilierty awakened by the French and American revolutions wort! still permeating the minds of the poor, while the richer classes had tired.of their amateurish excursions into the same domains, that Mai thus came to prove that no equality is pt-aiblo that the poverty "of the many ia a natural law that population grows too rapidly and tho newcomers find 110 room at the feast of nature, and that tho law cannot bo altered by any diange of institutions.

Ho thus gave to tho rich a kind of scientific argument against the ideas of equality and wo know that though all dominion is based upon force, force itsell begins to totter as soon as it is 110 longer supported by a firm belief in its own rightfulness. As to the poorer classes— which always resent tho Influence of ideas circulating at a given time amid tho wealthier classes—it deprived them of the very hojHi of improvement it mado them skeptical as to the promises of tho social reformers aud to this day tho most advanced reformers entertain doubts as to tho possibility of satisfying the needs of nil, in case these needs were snddenly increased by a revolution, and a temporary welfare of tho laborers resulted in asuddenincreasoof population. —Prince ivrapotkin in Forum.

A KicM for the "riickcr."

A new and useful employment has been developed for women which promises rapid development. This is that of professional packer. Tho need of this kind of service is apparent to those who witness movitigs and transportation of household goods, now so much more frequent than formerly, or who see the interior of women's trunks or men's valises. The cost of such helpers would bo more than covered by the security and the absenco of loss, provided the women were trained, competent and faithful. Moving is now a terror from the quantitv of bric-a-brac accumulated, tho pictures and books to be stored or transferred, tho flue fnniituro to bo provided for, the cushions and draperies to bo looked after. Quantities of valuables aro sacrificed simply from want of care and the impossibility of securing efficient, practical aid in such emergencies. Few people lniow how to pack, especially with a view to economy of space aud the con ditionof tho article when it is unpacked. —Housewife.
