great spued, and their present annor of steel strips, tlio lower portion of which wxis frequently under wat3-, considerably retarded tlieir progress, but cach of them wus taken in tow by ono of thoswiftand powerful cnibs, and witli tliis assistance tliey niado very good timo, reaching their destination ou tlio morning of theeocond day.
It -was on a breezy day, with a cloudy sky, and tho sea moderately smoothj that tho llttlo fleet of tlio syndicate lay to oil tho harbor of ono of tlio principal Canadian seaports. About (Ivo miles away tlio headlands on either sido of tho mouth of tho harbor could plainly lie eoun. It luul been decided tliat ltopcller No. 1 should Itegin o]icrations. Accordingly, tliat vessel stciunei.1 aNnut a milo nearer tlvo liarbor, iu.-coiu[vuiie\l by Cnib A. Tho other repiller and crab remained in tlieir first [vosition, ready to act in c,'u«. tliey should bo needed.
Tho approach of two vessels, evidently men-of-war, and carrying tho American flag, was 1 perceived from tho forts and redoubts at the mouth of tlio harbor, and tlio news quickly sprchd to tlio city and to tho vessels in jiort. Intenao exdtenierit ensueel on land and water, among tlio citizens of tiio place ns well as its defenders. Every -man wlio had a jtost of duty wus instantly at it and in less than half an liour tlio British man-of-war Scarabtous, which liad been lying at anchor a short distanco outside the liarbor, camo steaming out to moot the enemy. Thei-o wore other naval vessels in port, but they required more timo to lie jnit in readiness for action. -Vs EOjn as the ajiproiich oi Scaralxcus w-^ jx reoived by HepcJler No. 1, a boat liearing a white Ikig was kiwenyl from Uuit i-cssel :uul was rapidly rowed ird tlie British ship. When tho latter saw tlio Ixiat coming she lay to, and waiUxl its arrival. A note was delivered to tlio captain of theScaniljioiis, in which it was stat.-d that tlie syndicates which had undertaken 011 tho part of the United Stales tlie couduct of tlio war la.-twe.-en tliat country and Great Britain, was now prefixed to demand tlio surrender of tliis city, witli its forts and defenses, and all vessels within its liarbor and, as a first step, tlio immediate surrender of tlio vessel to tho commander of which this note was delivered.
Tho overwhelming effrontery of tliis demand caused tlio commander of tho Scaralwius to ioult whether he had to deal with a raving lunatic or a blustering fool but I10 infornieel tho jierson in charge of tho (lag of truco boat that ho would givo him fifteen minutes in which to got back to his vessel, and that I10 would then open ilro upon that craft.
Tho men who rowed tlio littlo boat wero not men-of-war's men, and wero unaccustonieel to duties of tliis kind. In eight minutes tliey had readied tlieir vessel and were safe on board.
Just seven minutes afterward tlio first shot came from the Scarabams. It I vassal over KepeUer Nei. 1, and tliat vessel, instead of replying, immediately steamed nearer her adversary. Tlio director-in-ediief desired to eletormino tlio eflect of an active umonade upon tho now armor, and therefore ordered tlio vessel placed in such a pewition tliat tlio Englishman might liavo tlie best opportunity for using it as a target.
Tlio Sciirabieus lost no time in availing horself of tho facilities offered. She was a largo and jxiwerftd ship, with a heavy armament uul, soon getting tlio range of ttw syndicate's vessel, she hurled ball after ball upon her striped side. Repellur No. 1 made no reply, but quietly submitted to tlio terrible tionibardmciit. Some of tlio great shot jarred her from bow to etcrn, but tint ono of thorn broko a steel spring, nor jxMietnitcd tlio heavy inside plate's.
After lialf an ln.ur of tliis \vorlc the director-in-chh'-f U-.-.-UI10 satisfied that the now armor had well acquitted itself in tho severe truil to which it had •»vi si:bject*.'d. S01110 of tlio air buffers liad teen dLsJibled, probably on acee!:nt of faults in their construction, but those could iwidily l-o replaced, and 110 further injury hiul 1xh.m dono the vv.^e'l. It was i:ot nf«xtssarj', tliercforc, fo continue tlie 1 ixp'rimi'iit miv lemger, and iMi-sides there was diuige'r tluit the Englishman ix'rceiving tliat liLs antagonist elid not apicar tc Ixi allecteel by liis fire, would approach closer and endeavor to ram her. Tliis was te bo avoided, for tlio Scarah-eus w:is a much hirger vessel than lie]oller Na 1, iukI
able to run into tho latter and
sink her by mero preponderance of weight. It was, therefore, decided to now test tlio powers of tlio cralw. Signals wore mode from Kepedlcr No. 1 -to Crab A, which had leon lying with tho larger vessel between it and tho enemy. These signals wero rnado by jets of denso black smoke, which wero ejected from small pipe on tho repeller. Theao slender columns of smoke preserved their cylindrical forms for somo moments, and were visible at a great distanco by day or night, being illuminated 'n tho

sage could bo projected into tlio air !is a telegraphic instrument would mark it iqion paper.
In tliis manner Crab A was ordered tc immediately proceed to tlio attack of tlio Scaraliajus. The almost submerged vessel ste.-uned rapidly from Ijehind her consort, and mado for tlio British imin-of-war. \\'hen tlio lalter vessel jierccivftd tlic approach this turtle backed obj«K t, si|uirting littlo jets of black smoko :usshc ri-plied to the orders from tlio reixrller. there was great anuizenie-jit em lioanl. tliat it was ii-ipossiblo to depress tho guns of tho latter no as to strike her. Tho great vessel was, therefore headed toward its assailant, and uneler a full head of steam dashed directly at it tc run it down. But tho crab oould turnai upon a pivot, and shooting to one side allowed the surging man-of-war to pass it, lVrceiving instantly that it would be diflicult to strike tliis niniblo and almost submerged adversary, tlio commander oi tlio Scaralxcus thought it wull to let it alono for tlie present, and to iKxir down with all speed upon tho repeller. But it was easier to hit the crab than to leave it behind. It was capablo of great speed, and, following the British vessel, it quickly came up witli her.
Tlio oourso of tho Scarnlxcus was Instantly clianged, and every effort was made to get tlio vessel into a position tc run down tho crak But this was not easy for so large a ship, and Crab A seemed to liavc no difliculty in keeping close to her stem.
SoversU machine guns especially adiipted for firing at tor] hh
lo boats, or any hos
tile craft which might bo discovered closo to a vcissel. wero now brought tc Ixsir upon tlio crab, and ball after ball was hurled at her. Somo of thoso struck, but glanced oil, without ienctrating liel tough armor.
Theso maneuvers luul not continued long when tlio crew of tho crab was ready to bring into action tlio peculiar apparatus of tliat peculiar craft. An enormous pair of iron force[s, each massive limt of which mesasured twelve feet or more in length, was run out in front of tho crak at a depth of six or eight feet below the surfaces. Tliesc forceps wero acted upon by an electric engine of immense power, by which tliey could bo shut, opened, projected, withdrawn or turned and twisted.
Tlio crab darted forward, and In thenext instant tho great teeth of her pincers were istened with a tremendous grip u)k)ii
the rudder anel rudder post of
the Soarak-eus. Then follijwexl a su.lden t-wist, which sent a thrill through both vessels, a crash, abackwruij jerk, the snapping of a chain, and in a moment tho great rudder, with half of tho rudder (port attached, was torn from the vessel, and as tho forceps opened it dropped to leeward and hung dangling by ono chain.
Again tho forceja opened wide again thero was a rush, and tliis timo tho huge jaws closed ujion tho rapidly revolving screw propeller. Thero was a tremendous crash, and tlie small but massive crab turned over bo
far that for an in
stant one of its 6idcs was plainly visible above tho water. Tlio blades of tho propeller wero crushed and shivered those parts of tho steamer's engines connecting with tlie propeller shaft wero snapped and rent apart, whilo tho propeller shaft itself was broken by tho violent stoppage.
Tlie crab, which had quickly righted, now backed, still holding tho crushed propeller in its iron grasp, and as it moved away from tho Scarabajus, it ex tracted about forty feet of its propeller sliaft then, opening its massive jaws, it allowed tho useless mass of iron to drop to tho bottom of tlie sea.
Every num on board tho Scarabanis was wild with amazement and excitement. Few could comprehend what liad happened, but tliis very quickly became evident. So far as motive power was concernexl, tho Scarabteus was totally disabled. Sho could not direct her courso, for her rudder was gone her propeller was gone her engines wero useless, and sho could do no more than float as wind or tide might movo her. Moreover, thero was a jagged hole in her stern where tho shaft had been, and through this tho water was pouring into tlio vesseL As a man-of-war tho Scarabanis was worthless.
Orders now camo fast from Repeller No. 1, which had moved nearer to the sceno of conflict. It was to bo supposed that tho disabled ship was properly furnished with bulkheads,

The either English vessels soon camo up, and each lay to and sent a boat to tlio Scaraboms. After half an hour's consultation, in which tlio amazement of thoso 011 board tho damagoel vessel was communicated to tho officers and crews of her two consorts, it was determined tliat tho smaller of these should tow tho disabled ship into port, wliilo tho other one, in company with a man-of-war just coming out of tho harbor, should innl-n attack upon liejieller No. 1.
