ELEVATORS BUN BY OIL POWER. It is said thoro ia not in Europe 8 steam pump worthy the name, or a passenger elevator, except that in the Eiffel tower, nnd it was built by an American firm.

Europeans are afraid of tho American hydraulic clovntor, that runs up liko a shot, but which, all tho Bamo, is as solid as tho everlasting hills. Even that, however, has been distanced by tho latest invention for hoisting heavy articles. The new hoist has been attached to one of tho largest sugar refineries in America, and is utilized for lifting tho great hogsheads of crado sugar from tho hold of a vessel to the refining floors. This tremendous hoist will lift at the samo moment two platforms, each containing twelve hogsheads. They go up just as tho passengers in the hydraulio elevator do—"like a shot."

Tho principle is tho samo as that on which tho passenger elevators are constructed—fluid pressure. A littlo Bteam pump which moves so slightly that one can scarcely see it sends tho fluid up to tho roof. Hero are great tanks, holding in case of tho hoist thousands of gallons. Tho pressure lifts a given weight below, according to tho approved rules of mechanics. The motion is communicated to a groat hollow cylinder which turnsjjlowly aud gently. But connected with it is a smaller cylinder which Is also turned, and which must necessarily move faster than tho large one. Then comes another and another, each smaller and more rapid than tho one before it. The cylinders aro called "accumulators," and tho last ono, which directly lifts tho hoist, moves at tremendous speed, sending tho elevator up rapidly.

Ono unusnal arrangement in the sugar refinery hoist is that tho tanks supplying tho fluid pressure are filled with oil instead of water. This is to prevent freezing in winter. Tho oil flows down and is pumped back again, circulating constantly. The only loss is that occasioned by friction. This powerful new hoist will servo an excellent purpose in mines and wherevor groat weights are to bo lifted. Tho fact that oil, as well water, can bo used for tho pressure will enable any kind of operations to be conducted in winter as in summer in regions ordinarily ice looked.

Once more it is claimed that the air ihip has been successfully invented. Ono ascension which was really moderately successful has been inado. Tho air ship is worked by propellers, and issteerable. It traveled several miles in on hour and three-quarters

Pine DUpluyn by Crack Cantons on the Lake Front— Ladles to lie Award* ed tho Decoration of

Chlralry«

TIIK PATRIARCHS.

ClllCAfio, Aug. 0.—About 50,000 visitors, including ladies, have so far arrived in tho city to participate in tho Old-Fellows' cantonment. Every train coming in brings ono or more cantons, each numbering from fifteen to fifty men oxcluslvo of ollleers, and every department commander and staff officer is now on the ground.

Thore was a great deal of interest to Odd-Fellows in yesterday's progaamme. In'tho morning the contest of merit in tho exemplification of tho work of subordinate lodges began in ISattery T). Dogree staffs from tliroo lodges exemplified the work in competition for the valnablo prizes offerod. Those lodges wero Wicker Fark Lodge, No. 2S1, of Chicago Virginia Lodge, No. 00. of Virata, Wis., and Fort Dearborn Lodge, No. 214, of Chicago. The prizes are: to the best staff in oxemplation of tho degroo work, $600 soioiul, S800 third, SU00, and fourth, the O. F. Foster. Son & Co.'s prizo, a sot of six collars and coin-silver jewels for subordinate lodge officials, valued at S150.

Tho military displays began yesterday afternoon on tlio Lake Front. Tho manual of arms and movomonts of canton, as prescribed in tho tactics of tho order, wero seen and appreciated. These are based partly on Upton's tactics, as used in the United States army, and partly on tho tactics of European armies. Tho unite of movement ft throe instead of four, as in the United' States army.

Tho drills yesterday were in both class A and class 1$. In both these classes tho schedule of movomonts is tho samo. The difference between tfio two classes is that class A is for cantons that have heretofore won prizes in competitive drills, and class is for those who liavo horetoforo competed in prize drills but have not won prizes. Then those cantons in class A compete not only for the cash prizos offered, but for the "Stokes"' medal as well, which is now held by Canton Marion, of Marion, Ind., but which has to bo won three times in succession before it belongs permanently to any canton. The prizos in class A are cash prizes of Si,500, SS00, S500 and $:!00 respectively, and to tho best commanding officers prizes of si 00, SS0, S50 and SoO respectively. .In class li tho prizes run from ?1.000 to $200, and for commanding ollhcors from $100 toS20.

The manual is very similar to that of the United States army as designed by lleneral Upton and revised by Lfeutenant-Colonei Hugh T. Reed (retired), who has been given charge of tho entiro contest, and who will bo chairmnn of the committee of judges. All tho judges aro ofllcors in tho United States army, and it just happens that they aro all graduates of West Point.

Tho crowd that was present to witness the drills yesterday afternoon was 'rather disappointing, it did not number more than 4,000 or 5,000, though soats had been provided for 35,000. Four cantons wero on tho programme for competitive drill yesterday. two in class A and two in class 11. One «f these, however, Canton Buffalo, of Buffalo, N. Y., entored in class B. failed to arrive in this c'ty in time. Canton London, No. 1, of London, Ont., with twenty-four chovaliers 'and threo officers, comploted tho schedule Of forty movements in twenty-two minutes. (.rand Canton Ohio, of Columbus, followed, and was succeeded by Canton Occidental, of Chic igo.

Following the canton drills the threo cantons competing yesterday formed a regiment, nndi'r command of MajorOoneral Jamoj 11. 'icholson, with General William B. Frost as Adjutant, and tfavo a regimental drops parade. This ordor will ho followed every day. the cantons that drill each day forming into a regiment for dress parade.

Tho grand reception of visiting can tons by Generalissimo Underwood was hold in the south parlor of tho Auditorium Hotel at 10 o'clock last ovoning. A largo number of ladles wero in tho crowd, and thoir bright toilots con' trasted beautifully with tho glittering laco and Hashing sjvortls of tho uniformed officers.

This evening there is to ho the award of tho decoration of chivalry, and In this tho Daughters of Kebokah have a promlnont part, *s thoro are twenty of them who aro to receive tho decoration. The award-is to ho accompanied by ail the pomp and circumstance of tho Patriarch- Militant display, and is to take placo in tho opon air on tho Lake Front. The badgo of tho docoration of chivalry is a handsome jeweled pin and pendent, and is to bo bestowed on tho following ladios: Mrs. Nettie Stahl, Mrs. Agnes Tabor, MrB. Mary Young, Miss liarnum, daughter of the Grand Master of the State of Illinois, Mrs. Celia L. EdwaiMs, Mrs. Gertrude No IT, Mrs. Lillian Brown, Mrs. Mahala Churchill, Mrs. C. F. Raymond, Mrs. Eva Cain, Mrs. Ireno Fletcher, Mrs. Mary Hitchcock, Mrs. li M. Pearson,s Mrs. Ada Parker, Miss Sara llayman, Mrs. Eva K. Witlioy, of Springfield, secrotary of tho Rebekah dogree convention of Illinois Mrs. J. Whowell, Mrs. L. G. Carpenter, Mrs. IL J. Fry and Sirs. E. J. Cully. Thero aro but three gentlemen who are|to receive the decoration.
