Some women imagine that nothing will stand the peculiar breaking strain of their forms on corset bones."

They don't know Kabo, which neither breaks or kinks.

If Kabo breaks or kinks in a year, go back to the store at which you bought -your corset and get your money again, every cent of it.

If the corset doesn't suit you, after wearing a week or two or three, go back for your money.

There's a primer on Corsets for you at the store.

Tho knowledge that the enemy was all about us kept Arnold irH myaelf with the picked all night As a matter of precaution we extinguished tho camp fires, and throw up a breastwork about tho lnclo3ure where tho horses and wagon nn les wero feeding. It wag half past tiirco In the morning, and I was with tho i.iekets to tho southwest of the camp, when, from tho direction of Knoxvlilo, 1 heard the beat of hoofs, coming on at a walk, and tho unmlstakablo chatter of chains and scabbards, Soon tho black forms of horsemen, like spectral silhouettes, como to light against tho stars. If these were Con. federates, I reasoned that they either bad thoboldness of great strength or else they wero not awaro of their proximity to a Union forco. When the foremost horseman came within hall, 1 shouted: "Ilalt! who goos there?"

In tho unmlstakablo accent of the Cnmborland mountains, tho answer camei

Mobbo friends and mebhe foes. Who the blazes aro you?" "Dismount and advance—ono at a time," I commanded, as tho dark horsemen appeared to rise from tho ground *11 about mo.

As tho strangers did not show a disposition to comply, I was about to glvo tho order to fire, when a voleo, that had a familiar ring In It, called out: "nollo. thari is that Harry Watts?" "That's my name," I replied. "Who are you?" "Wolford's Fust Kalntuck. A flghtin' foh tho Ouv'ment, by gosh!" camo tho thrilling reply. "Is that you, Ford?" 'Taln't no one else." "And Wolford?" "llo'll bo up shortly with tho reg'nr.ent. Thunderl wo'ro out buntin' Brent's damn partisans, and thbught wo'd Jumped 'em."

Tho speaker threw himself from his horse, and running up I found mysolt in tho arms of my gallant friend, Captain Ford, of tho famous First Kentucky Cavalry, or "calvary," as half the men called themselves.

Uoforo dayligtit the whole regiment was up, but Instead of advancing on ono line, they swarmed in from ovory point of tho compass.

Colonel Wolford was at this tlmo in commnnd of the brigade to which my roglment was attached. So as soon as ho appeared 1 reported formally and turned over my command with a groat sense of reliof.

Thon and till this hour Frank Wolford has been my beau ideal of a scout and leader of irregular horse, and 11 thero ever was a braver, more ubiquitous or nuire irregular body of cavalry in the world than that same splendid First Kentucky, history has failed to montlon It.

Although atypical Ifontuclty mountaineer, Frank Wolford always Impressed mo as a line typo of the Puritan horsoman—a rouuh rider of Cromwell's era, living two centuries after his tlmo. In tho prime of life, of medium height, strong as a bull, tireless as tho wind, stubborn and set In all his opinions, with tho eye of a hawk and tho fearlessness of a tiger, ho was Just tho mau to load that wonderful band of horsomon. Ho was ono of thorn he dressed and ato as they did. lie called his officers and men by their Christian names, ond oven tho buglers addressed him as "Frank." I novor hoard a man whoso oaths sounded 103s like profanity. Ho walked with a limp, the result ol' a wound, and it was said that his men, from love and sympathy, limped also.

In addition to his own reglmont, Colonel Wolford had with him four squadrons of tho Eleventh Kentucky, and ho said that Major Brown was noar by with three hundred of the Sovonth Pennsylvania.

During breakfast I told him about Frank Brent, and ho roplied: "I reckon that fellow ain't lying thla time. But tho other side have hung lots of hotter Union men why should you bother?"

I frankly told him tho seoret of my Interest and repeated tho promiso I had made General Boyle and tho condemned man's sister. "I'll help you," said tho Colonel, "but you'll allow H'b a bit strango to seo ono of our peoplo fretting himself to savo such a fellow."

While we wero talking, MeKeo camo Into camp, seemingly much oxclted. I Introduced him to Colonel Wolford, and without waiting to be questioned, lie said: "Thar's a camp of the Partisan Rangers with 'bout twenty men In hit, back in the hills not more'n a hour's rldo off." "Tho Colonel questioned tiio old man, and all his answers wero clear and prompt "Watts, you'ro moro interested in those infernal Partisans than I am how wou'.d you like to go over and gobblo 'em?-' asked tho Colonel. "Nothing could suit mo bettor," I roplied adding: "that is, if MclCeo will I guide me." 1

MoKee promptly consented, and 1 within twenty minutes I was riding for tho hills at the head of forty of my own men.

MoKco proved to bo a man of unusual intelligence. Acting under Ills advlco and guidanco, I succeeded .in surrounding and surprising the Partisan Hangers. Wo swept into their camp without enoountoring any pickets, and tho men, many of them old friends and acauaint-

are the New Goods that haye been just received by

ances, surrendered wit.nout liring a shot. Among the prisoners was a sergeant named Burns, from Lexington: Indeed, ho was in command, and him I questioned at once as to tho wherenbouts of Frank Bront at the time John Harding was murdered. Burns ce- oborated tho condemned man's story, and this bofore I told him of my reasons for making the inquiry.

I noticed that MeKeo did not advance with us on tho Confederate camp, but paid no heed to it at the tlmo.

While I was talking to Iiurns, I heard shouts followed by tho rattlo of carbines, and, springing to my feet, 1 saw tho rim of tho valley swarming with gray-coatod horsemen.

CIIAFTER VIII.

With my field-glass I quickly swept tho surrounding hills, and I saw MeKeo with tho on"oming troops. Fooling that I had been tricked and betrayod, I determined to get out of It as best I could. With the instinct that oomos of experience with such situations, tny men flung themselves Into their saddles and waited for mo to move.

It was a-brigade and not a regiment that surrounded mo, shouting: "Surrender! surrenderl you damned Yankeo sons of guns!" tho Confederates swept down llko an avalanche.

I know that our escape depended on our horses rathor than on the weakness of any part of tho oncoming lino, so I spurred to tho front, shouted: "Chargel" and faced tho depression, through which a qroek flowed out of tho valley.

Quickor than I can record tho act, tho Confederates In our front reined In and flung thomsolves from the saddle, and tho next Instant Wharton's Tovas Rangers opened on us with carbine, Colt and shotgun, and riderless horses wont snorting and plunging past me.

Braver mon never sat a saddle than theso same Texans, but In a score of fights with them since Shlloh's bloody Hold, I had never known them to stand tho saber, and my men handled tho saber as a vacquoro handles a whip.

Tho fright of surprise was over. I cast a quick glanco back at my gallant followers, and I felt my 6oul leaping to my eyes as I caught the gleam of upraised swords and saw tho glorified battle light on their faces. "Ilurrah!" Wo struck them, and they broke from the front, and scattered to tho right ond loft.

A few seconds of flashing swords and crashing small arms. A few seconds of unutterablo Joy—tho fierce, barbarous Joy never felt outside of a charge. A bluo wave crested with steel swept past mo. A sudden wonder why I was not homo on by Its force, and thon, with a human groan, my horse fell and I was

"1 WAS I'lSSED TO THE KAIITII."

pinned to the earth, while tho remnant of my gallant boys dashed beyond the reach of tho foo. "By Heavens! that was fine, and I'm almost sorry you didn't make Itl"

With tho feeling of a man rudoly aroused from sloop I looked up and saw it long-haired, black-bearded man bonding over mo, while a half dozen mon in faded gray uniforms wero rolling ofl tho dead horso that held mo to tho earth.

Tho man who had spoken helped mo to my foot, and then, with a feeling of awful humiliation, I slipped tho knot from my wrist and let my sword fall to tho ground, and I wondered why 6omo of the mon orowding about me did not pick tho blado up but It remained untouched whilol was thero. "Wa'al, Cap'n Watts, you did yer level best, but yer played a losing gamo," said tho long-haired man, as ho led me to rock and forced mo to sit down. "How do you know my name?" asked. "Wa'al, that's tollin" but wo camo over har to gobblo you sorry tho crowd didn't stick by you, but that's Just llko sojers, said the long-haired man, with low laugh. "Who aro you?" I demanded. "Only Jones Jlst Cap'n Jones, of tho Eighth Texas," said the Confederate. "And you will parole mo?"

Tho man shook his head till tho long black hair soemed to stand on end, thon ho said, slowly and solemnly: "Wo can't do it thar ain't any moro parolin' or exchangin', rriftre's tho pity for us. You'vo got to go through and board at our hotel a bit." "Libby?" "Yes." "Well," 1 said, with an effort at laugh tcr, "I'll find lots of good men there." "So you will, Cap'n hut would you let mo ax you a fow questions?" "Go on," 1 roplied. "You woar now boots?" "Yes." "What size?" "Eights, but a size too largo," I said "That's a most providential o.olncl donco," said Captain Jones, of tho

Ulghth Texas. "I wear that size myself." Indeed?"

Yes, lndot^y and yo'd hotter git up aforo Wharton comes along, ior lio's nigh barefoot, and that's his size, too. Now, old feller, I'm not gwln'to rob you of your boots, but I'm 'bligod to havo 'em, and I'll pay you thar full prlco. Lot mo bootjack you."

Bofore I could ask for an explanation Captain Jones backed up, seized my foot alternately between his thighs and Jerked off my boots, and with equal rapidity ho throw otT his own worn footgear and assumed mine. "You kinder think I'm goln' through you bad," said Jones, looking down at his foot with an expression of great satisfaction. "You are playing the part of robbor without any risk," I said. "Soo har, Captain Watts, I ain't 110 damn thief. 1 need theso and other tilings, so I took 'cm. It I didn't ovory infornal homo-guard from hero to Richmond would go through you. Tell mo tho price of your hoots, pants and ovorcoat, as well as any greenbacks you'vo go* alwut yon, and I'll mako a cloan swap for Confod. greenbacks." 1 subsequently learned that Jones was tho champion poker-playor of Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, and this accounted for the largo amoui.t-of money ho had stuolc in Ills pockets, and even in tho lining of his clothes.

He pulled out great wads of bills and said: "ray yourself, ole feller, and don't bo too d—d bashful, but thon you'ro a Yank and thar ain't no uso giving you any advice. It's too had that mar' got plunked sho was a beauty." IIo compressed his lips and nodded at my dead thoroughbred.

Without counting the money, 1 took bunch of tho gray and bluo backs Jones handed ne, and said contemptuously: "I may find this stuff useful. Captain, but it Isn't very pretty." "Wa'al," shouted Jones, as ho stuck tho remainder of the wad into his broast pocket. "I'li allow tho money ain't purty, but tho man that despises it Is fooL Lot mo give you a bit of advice, my son, for you'ro goln' to bo with us some time. Taper Is mighty valuable in tho Confederacy, and when ever you como acrost a pleco that's got the pectur of a locomotives or a woman onto it—them's two of tho d—st fastest things in cr tlon, freeze onto It—that's money."

I subsequently found the Captain was right in all his representations.
