Crawfordsville Daily Journal, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 30 July 1890 — Page 4

There's a corset that isn't a corset, a waist with straps for the shoulders and rows of buttons to button on skirts and stocking supporters and so forth—the Ball Waist —and that's about the whole of it. No you can put it in the washtub—no metal in it or on it.

It is worth your seeing, if for nothing but how to sew on buttons to button easy and never come off, and how to make buttonholes wear forever.

Women differ in their wnys of thinking and dressing as well as in other ways. This waist is for women whose minds are made up that they won't wear corsets.

There's much to be said on both sides but did you ever hear of a woman who hadn't made up her mind in some way? and is there any possible use in trying to get her to change it She will and she will or she won't and she won't.

You can get the Ball Waist and wear it a week or two or three and, if you don't want it, take it back to the store and get your money

Ho was big enough and bravo enough to elopo with ouo woman, but the idea of clopiug with a whole family was too much and ho rebelled, Thus the engagemont was broken oil and the interested parties returned to their respective wife and husband. Neither of them bears a very immaculate reputation in Darlington. For the past montli or two they havo boon running together to tho scandal of the neighborhood. Mrs. Hooker's husband is known as "Blaok Iko" on a count of his dark comploxion and Mrs. Host is a quiet, respectable woman who deserves a better kusband.

CHAPTER III.

I must, confess to having often felt an lntonso doslro to capuiro Frank It rent and on.his part ho had boasted, withsomething of an Indian's ferocity, that ho would wear my scalp at his 4clt boforo tho war was over. Hut tho joy Ij had anticipated in his humiliation was not mine when in tho dusk of that stormy evening we stooil face to face.

When I last saw Frank 15rent ho was as lianilsomo a youth as could bo found In all tho Bluo Crass country, but tho two years of strife and privation had told on him—this and the terrible ordeal he was then undergoing. Ills fine, tall form was still erect, and his bearing half defiant, but the ashy pallor .•! his cheeks, the haunted expression in his dark eyes, and the nervous twitching of tho lips told how keenly ho felt tho situation.

I gave him my hand, and said,

QS

I

led him to a seat: "Frank, I am mighty sorry to find you in this fix." "I have no fault to find with my being prisoner, for thai N cho fortune of war," ho said, with a nonchalant air. "As good or oven bettor men than myself havo had to submit to capture. But I do object to being convicted of a crlmo which I am incapable of committing." "But thoro must havo been evidonco against you?" I said, quietly. "So thoro was!" ho exclaimed, "but from first to last the condemnatory part was perjured." "You refer to the murder of .Tohn Harding, near Perryville?" "Yes. that's it, Captain. Harding was killed, how or by whom I know r.ot, but I do know that at tho dato of tho murder I was still with my command, two hundred miles away," said Frank, with a fierce earnestness that convinced mo ho was telling the truth. "But could you not provo your whereabouts at. the timoV" I asked. '"Prove my whereabouts at tho tlmol" ho repeated. "Why, how could 1 bring any of my men before a Yankeo courtmartial to prove an alibi?" "But, are thoro no Union troops who might havo been aware of your vicinity? It is your custom to let your whoroabouts bo known," I said.

Frank Brent rose and began pacing tho iloor, while he stroked his soft, brown beard in a perplexed way. Suddenly coming to a halt boforo mo, ho fixed his eyes on the tloor and said: "There Is one of your men, an old friend of yours, who is now In Libby prison, who, if ho wore here, could prove that on the very day John Harding was killed I was in Powell's valley, near Cumberland Clap." "Who is the man?" I asK( "Howard Scott." "Howard Scott a prisoner?" I qpcclaiincd. "Yos, captured by ino on the tonth day of October—the day of tho murdor, mind you—captured by mo two hundred miles from tho placo whero Harding's body was found. I am usually well-mounted, but no horso could make thatdistanco in a few hours," said Frank Brent, with a nervous laugh. "I shall not deny what you Btato," I said, "but as you can not corroborate it, it does not holp your caso. As wo are not exchanging prisoners now, Lioutenant Scott's presenco is out of tho question, though I will confess that his ovidonco would Bavo you." no had ovidenlly beon thinking over every chanco to avert his sontenco, for ho said quietly: "General Boyle believes ho can got your President to postpone tho dato. If that I" done, Scott can bo paroled, specially exchanged, or his ovidonco, taken In Richmond can bo sent through under a flag of truce. Ho does not liko me, and there is no love lost botwoon us, hilt ho is a bravo man and ho would not lie, not even to get squaro with mo for tho trick that led to his capture."

I did not ask what this trick was, nor did I dream that I was shortly to hear tho infamous story from tho lips of tho man in question. "Every thing," I said, "doponds on tho outcome of General Boylo's efforts with

the

President. If thoro is a ro-

priovo, and I sincerely hope thoro will bo, wo may get Lieutenant Scott's evidence in time to save you. Meanvhlto, keep a stiff upper iip, nnd command tny purso and my time. I shall be hero till noon to-morrow."

I rose to go, and again gavo him my hand. Still holding it, he looked about

"It is afnlnst tho rules" I said, "for yon to havo a knife you cannot oxpoct mo as a good soldier to vlolato thorn." "But I will not hang!" ho said, with an oath. "Thoro Is a way—somo way, to avoid that, and my sister will holp me, if you do not!"

I mado up mind to prcvontlils suicldo. I tried to soothe him, but was not disappointed at my failure. A man with a ropo about his neck and tho gallows In sight is In no mood to liston to platitudes.

Promising to spend tho night with him I went out to attend to tho duties that had been my excuse for coining to: camp Dick Robinson. Every few mlnutes I dropped Into tho telegraph ofllco ot headquarters in tho hopo of hearing that a favorablo answer had been received from Mr. Lincoln but ton o'clock came, with increased wind and rain, without a word that might givo hopo to tho condemned man. •,

CHAPTER IV.

I had no appetito for my supper with General l!«yle,. Wo loft tho food untasi~.l, whtlo wo discussed Frank Bront's chances. "Thero aro two Kentuckians in Washington," 1 said, "who should havo wolght with the President if thoy woro to intercede. I am suro .thoy know Frank's kinsmen, if thoy do not know him." "Who aro they?" asked tho Gonoral. "Tom Speed and udgc-Advocato General Holt." "By Jove, Captain. I did not think of them!" oxclalmed the old man, as ho started to his feet. "Join mo in a tolograph and wo will send it at onco." (N. B.—At this tlmo, tho word "tologram" had not como into use.)

Wo hurried Into tho telegraph ofllco, and within ten minutes thomessago was being flashed to Washington, thoro to bo duplicated and copies sent to Tom Speed nnd General Liolt.

As a drowning man is said to clutch at a straw, so I drew comfort from what wo had dono nnd nt onco wont down to tho prison to communicato tho fact to Carrlo Brent and her brothor.

I passed tho guards abc::t tho enclosure passed tlio guard pacing boforo tho door, and catno to a halt on tho threshold. Within I saw ton soldiers wearing their sido arms and standing at parade rest. It was my first oxporlonco with a military execution, but I did not need to bo told that those men woro tho death watch and that they or their relief would remain with tho condemned man till -ho stood on tho scaffold and tho trap was sprung.

Adlm lamp, suspended from tho heavy, rough-hewn cross-boains, revealod tho prisoner and his sister seated bonoath it, whllo In from of thorn stood tho old, whlto-halred post chaplain, himself a Kontuckinn.

That plcturo Impressed mo poworfully. Tho rain came down on%tho shingled roof with tho rattlo of a hundred minlaturo drums to tho occompanlmont of tho wind's shrill fifing. 1 had grown familiar with funeral dirges and hurried burial sorviccs, and although I novor witnessed ono unmoved, tho most solemn of them had novor affected mo as did tho preparations for death going on boforo my oyes.

Many a night when lying noar tho mangled dead nnd llstoning to tho heart-rending orios of tho woundod, I bavo cursed tho cruel barbarities of war, and this feeling of loathing has grown on mo with the years. As 1 looked In at tho whito faco nnd loved form of tho woman doaror to mo than lifo, I folt liko shrieking out a protest against tho conditions that, without any deserving, had crushcd hor pure, bravo hoart

Aftor a fow words of exhortation that impressed mo as being tho very essonco of heart-born oloquonco, tho old chaplain began Tom Mooro's oxqulsito sacred song: "Como, yo disconsolate, whero'or yo languish." During tho singing, in which tho prisoner and his sistor jolnod, I wont in and sat down besldo her, and with a broken volco I tried, as did tbo stolid guards, to givo omphasis to tho closing lino: "Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven can not heal."

Promising to call again boforo daylight, tho chaplain wont out about twelvo o'clock, and tho fury of tho storm seomod to bo intensified by tho sllonco. I mado an oflort to speak, but realizing how weak words woro for my purposo, I whlsperod to Carrlo that I would go down to tho telegraph ofilco and find out if message had been rocolved from Washington. "No word yet, slr,"ropliod tho operator to my inquiry "and," ho added, as hobont his ear ovor tho rocolving instrument, "I'm afraid wo can got no news from Washington to-night." "Why not?" I asked. "Tho storm covors a wldo area," said tho oporator, "and I fear our communication with tho North will bo shut off boforo morning." "Has this happened boforo?" "Yes several times." "And how long boforo repairs woro mado?" "Tho shortest timo was twenty-four hours," said tho operator.

Feeling that ovon tho olemonts woro arrayed against tho unfortunato pris oner, I mado my way back to tho log houso.

Carrlo gavo mo a quick, searching look, but sho askod no questions sho knew as woll as If I had told hor that no word of comfort had been rocolved from Washington.

I suggested to Frank to lio down, but ho shook his head and said, grimly: "Tho timo is too short to spond it in sleop. When tho end has como ono can rest through otornlty."

It scorned as If tho sun had gono down for tho last timo, so long was tbo night. Just boforo daylight tho chaplain ro turned, and, thankful for tho oxcuso his prosonco gavo mo, I again sought tho tolograph offlco. Thoro 1 found Gonoral Boylo, and ho did not nood to toll mo that ho had not closed bis eyes in sloop during tho night.

In answer, to my question, tho oporator saldi "Tho dlroct linos working west from Washington nro down." "Thon," I gasped, "you can not communicato with tho Capital?" "YCH, Cincinnati has Just said that

tnoy wero nbout to operate ovor tho long circuit by way of Cleveland, HufTalo, Now York and south along tbo coast, but'as tho storm is moving rapidly In that direction. 1 should not bo surprised to find all communication shut off bofore ten o'clock," said tho operator.

Whilo wo stood bending ovor tho Instrument on whoso mysterious ticking so much doponded, tho gray dawn of a stormy morning stole in tho room, and tho rovcillo went ringing through tho enrnp.

I looked at my watch it was ten minutes to six. In four hours Frank Ilront would bo standing in tho placo of oxocution, from tho direction of which I could hear tho hammering of tho mon making tho scaffold ready.

I was alioiit to walk out with tho Goneral when thoclicklng increased In a fovorisli way, and tho oporator callod out:

Wait, gentlemen, I think thoro is somothlng coininjr soon!" Wo turnod back and bent over him, reading tho words as thoy caino from his penoil: 'WASHINGTON, D. C., Nov. "10, 1S03.

General J. Boyle, Commandant Camp-Dick Robinson, Ivy.:—Tbo President directs mo to say that after an Interview with Messrs. Speed nnd Holt ho dooms It best for tho Interest of tho servico to—"

Thon tho writing stopped and tho clicking died out whilo tho operator norvously worked tbo switchboard key, but without making a sound. 'What is up?" asked tho General, his strong faco twitching with excitement.

Tho lines nro down to tho Nortb wo aro shut off from Washington, and wo must remain so nt least for tho day," said tho man. [TO BE
