THE THREATENED BOYCOTT. The throat of Soutliorn journals to boycott tlio North iu caso tho Federal election bill should pass hoa tho same old aute^bollum ring. Tliey 'will •withdraw thoir trade they will transfer their trado to their English allies they will ruin the whole North thoy will send us to tho demnitiou bow wows if wo refuse to play thoir way. Perhaps it does not ocour to them that boyootting is built like a cross-cut saw, with two lutndles. No peoplo on earth are so ready to nccopta favor as aro tho Southern peoplo. No peoplo are so ready to cry out for aid ill times of distress and iiouo are so willing to respond as tho North yet when a fancied wrong appears revenge is uppermost in their minds, and havoc runs wild through tho South—in anticipation. When tho yollow favor struck them, with its deadly forco, those striokeu peoplo cried for aid and the
North, with its usijal liberality, responded until tho South oried, hold, onough when tho floods devastated whole sections of tho South, again tho North camo forward with lavish hand when the earthijuuke shook Charleston to its foundation and (juaking inhabitants fled in fear, homeless and houseless thoy turned their faces northward for succor. It came, abundantly, cheerfully. Oomparo this generosity of tho North w.tli tho sneers and exultations of some of tho Southern journal when (Jliioago was laid in ashes. Now, when Congress daroB to otter a bill, which would operate alike iu all sections of tho United States, a howl goes up all along tho line and threats aro heard that if honest elections are forced upon tho South, tho Northern merchant aud manufacturer shall be boycotted. Tho Bourbon must rule in tho South or ho will ruin. Tlio Domocratio party must bo on top, no matter whoso rights aro assailed. Theory of negro domination is getting ntalo. It is not fear of Africanization, but fear of ltepubliconization which stirs the fowels of tho South. If it is right to be honest, enforoo tho law, no matter who howls. Let tho cry of secession again swell the air, but go forward iu the steady oourso of right. The throat to destroy the country brought the South devastation once the threat to boycott will bring destruction to their trado. Tho North is far abler to sustain themselves than is the South and euoli threats smack much more of mumbloypeg than manhood. There is but one question to bo disoussed in Congress. Is the eleotiou bill rightf «Will it operate alike in all sections*
I icing answered in tho ailirmotivo it is clearly tho duty of Congress to pass tho bill aud tho President's duty to ouforco it?
