Peril on a Rumiwny Train.A passcngertrain of ten couches, of which three were Pullman sleepers, was on its way cast from San Francisco. It slowly climbed the mountains to Tehochapi pass, a "pusher" being used. When the summit is reached there is a sharp descent, the grade of somo points dropping off 200 feet to the mile. It is customary before starting on this downward journey to Rive tho air brakes a thorough testing, but it would appear that this was not done, or if it was the apparatus met with an accident soon after leaving the summit. The engineer permitted the train to attain a high rate of siwed before applying tho brakes. He found that they would not work.

The speed of tbe train was momentarily increasing. It shot along precipices where there was a sheer decline of thousands ot feet on one side and a wall of rock on tho other. It rattled over bridges spanning deep gorges and whizzed around curves where engine and rear sleeper almost met across the chasm. Day was just breaking. Most of the passengers were stooping. A few, howevor, were awakened by tho terrific breakneck speed of tho train, and were terror stricken. In ono of the Pullman sleepers a woman struggled with tho conductor in an effort to throw herself overboard. Tbe engineer reversed and vainly tried to stop the momentum. He whistled again and again, and aroused a sleepy brakeznan, who threw his strength upon one of the hand brakes. It snapped like a straw, and it was afterward found that the wheels had torn tbe broke to pieces as soon as they touched It.

Finally the truia shot Into a portion of the road where there was a level space to the left, whilo to the right was a descent of 1,200 feet. At this plaoo it jumped the track, fortunately on the left side. Strange to say, although the train must have been running fully seventy-five miles an hour, not one person was killed, though tho coaches were badly wrecked. Ono woman was seriously but not fatally hurt.—Cor. St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

A Kentucky Senator.

Down in the lower regions of the city the other day who should I see striding along Broadway but ex-Speaker Carlisle. One would have supposed that he was in another city looking'aftcr his aew senatorship, but hero he was as brawny as a pugilist and as merry as a tadpole. Ills new iiilk hat was way down tho back of his head. 1 never knew what use the collar of a coat was on hot day till I saw how handily it held up the hat pushed back off a burning forehead, no wore a sort of plum colored coat, shiny and now, that flapped its wings freely at each side of his brawny bosoin. It was near the stock exchange, and tho new senator wore his very beamingest rinatorial smile the smile of a winning man, of course.—New York Cor. Richmond Dispatch.

POISON IVY AND SUMACH.

Useful Information Concerning tho Dangers That Lurk In Thickets. There need be. no trouble in identifying tho poison ivy in any of its forms. Tho hniry trunk will often serve us. but there are two other features which are 6i much more value. First let us remember that its li-jsveu are always grouped in threes whatever the outlines of their more or less wavy margins. In some sections tho plant is always called the "throe leaved ivy." And thi.'i naturally leads me to a consideration of that other vine with similar hubits which is commonly known in the sim.o localities n3 Ihe "live leaved ivy." This '.a a leaf of the Aicpelopsis iuin(]uuf0ll:i (quinqui'folm—live leaves), also uiliixl Virginia creeper mid woodbine. Look at the leaf and fix Its form in your mind. This is one of our most beautiful native climbers. It is allied to the gmpevine, Is perfectly harmless, und in the one plant that has to slider from suspicion, being often destroyed under tho impression that it is the "poison ivy."

The writer knew of a person who possessed a beautiful home upon the Hudson, and'whose deficiency in knowing of this one little page of botany cost him a severe loss. Ilis children were suddenly prostrated with ivy poisoning, and one of his "ninth hour" neighbors came in to offer him some learned advice. Something in this style: "Well, squire, it's fetched 'em at lost. I've been tellin' Betsy all aloug that the pesky stuff would ketch ye orter a whilo. Well, thar, goodness and truthl Time und time agin', when I've lieen goin' by tho gate an' seen them air children plajin' in tho summer house yonder, it's made mo feel 'tamal ticklish, an' I've sed time and agin, an' tolo Betsy so tew, that I'd bet my best gobbler they'd be broke out nforo a week, an' now they've done it an' if you take my advice you'll cut the pesky weed down and burn it atore tho bull on ye is ketched. That air weed is piztn shumake, an' it'll ni)ib on to kill some folks."

Such advice, coining from ft practical farmer in whom the "squire" had perfect confidence, was immediately uftod upon. The vines which hud embowered tho beautiful arbor for a generation were suwod off at the ground. And to think that a peep into tho botany might have saved them I

Four things need to be committed to memory to insure safety against our poison sumachs:

First—The three leaved ivy is dangerous. Second—The five leaved is harmless. Third—The poison sumachs have whito berries.

Fourth—No red berried sumach is poisonous. Both the poison ivy and tho poison sumach, though unlike in appearance of foliage, have similar whito berriea growing in small, slender clusters from the axils Of the leaves. In all other sumachs the berries are red and in close bunches at tho ends of tho branches, and far from being dangerous, yield a frosty looking acid which is most agreeable to the taste and wholesome withal. With these simple precepts fixed in the mind no one need tear tho dangers of tho thickets. Nor need any one repeat the hazardous exploit of two young ladies whom I know, one of whom as a committeo on church decoration in a country town brought her arms full of the scarlet autumn branches of the venomous sumach while the other once sent the writer a really beautiful group of carefully arranged rare grosses and mosses generously docked with tho whito berries of the poison ivy. Both of these rash maidens I believe poid tho severe penalty of their botanical innocence.—William Hamilton Gibson in Harper's Young People.
