AN ANTELOPE'S MIGHTY LEAPS.

Typical Yarn of tho Champion l«lnr of tho Mining Region.

In one of tho old mining towns of thiB part of California, way up 011 tho slope uf tho Sierra Nevadas, there lived several years ago, during tho activo working of tho hydraulic mines, celebrated character whose modesty, ns ho still lives in the land of tho living, forbids my giving his name. Ills justly celebrated fame arose from his remarkable power of lmiTatlon. Ho could take any trivial occurrence that happened In town, dress it up In such glowing colors and throw so many vivid sidelights upon it that not oven tho participants them selves could recognize it. (}. B. undoubtedly wore for years tho belt as •hauiplon liar of that mining region, and ne of his slorles, that I liappenod to hear him relate, I think is worth preserving. I will let him tell it in his own words:

It was in the spring of '50 that a train of sixty-five 011 us started across tho plains for Californy. Tho most ou us were young mon an' able to rough it. but we had threo famblies, with about a dozen young tins among us, an' one baby was born 011 the way. Wal, of course, fresh meat soon got mighty scase, as there was so many trains 011 the trail ahead on us that all tile game had lieen killed or scairt away. The young mother she kept kind o' pindlin like after her kid was born and got sick o' bacon an sich like, an' the young feller* that had hosses o' their own to llde, thorn 1 r.inn haif a dozen on 'em in our train, used l-o scour out 011 the plains for fresh meat for her.

One day three 011 us got arter couple o'imlelojH.' early iu tin inornin when our bosses was flesh, an' we took after 'cm, yellin* like Comancbi jest to see 'em 11111. There was 11 eoupl hills on the plain that stood

ters iniule 11 break to go between'em.

g'

We was cimiln' on alter 'em like wo meant to catch 'em, when they see that this ojieu place U'tween the hills had grown up with tall chapparral. "Now 1111 imtfli]hi won't run up a hill, nor into thick bresli if I10 knows it, so they stopjied till we got a'most up to 'em, an' one 011 'em tried to run back by us, but one o' tho boys stopped him with a charge of buckshot. The other one, seein' what an almighty tight place he'd got into, jest made for the bresli an" tried to jump over it. Wal, sirs, he made the all firedest jump as evor 1 si-e but when the critter got up Into the air he seed he hadn't jumped far enough, an'I'm a liar if he didn't gather himself in the air an' gin another o* the most, tremeiijoiis Jumps that any critter ever did make, an' jest went a-sailin' right. 011 over the bresli mi'landed on t'other side 011't. slick and clean!"—Cor.

Every one mu*t have noticed the number of ladies who wear short, curly hair at present. It may astonish you to learn that most of these banning curls are false. Typhoid and other fevers have jilayed havoc with hair. After such an illness the hair is almost invariably seriously injured, and even If it dues not fall out it becomes so dry ond harsh that there is nothing to IK* done but to shave it close and wait fiir a now growth. Unless tho hair grows very rapidly it will bo two or three months before it is long enough to look well, and in tho meantime a wig is a necessity.
