OKLAHOMA LAND OfriOL.
John H. Burford, of this Oity, Appointed Register, A United States Land Olliee has been established at Oklahoma Oity, in the lerritory of Oklahoma, making three in that future State, the other two being lix'iitt'd at Guthrie and Kinglishor. John 11. Burfoid, of this city, 1ms resigned the Judgeship of the county of No Man's Land, to accept the office of Register of the new cilice, lie arrived nt Beavor by stage Saturday oveuing, and soon became thoroughly disgusted. With the exception of a rickety twostory framed house the entire town was unu.0 up of dug outs or mud houses The Oklahoma Oity Daily Timos thus speaks of the now arrangement: ,, -U'ediBtriot will include a part of the Guthrie and Kinglishor districts, and no doubt, will also take in the Indian countries on the east as soon i.s they are "puni'd up. The Register ami Receiver liavo been appointed. Mr. J. H. Burfoid is tlio Register. Ho lives at Crawfordsvlle, lnd. A member of the Times force has known Mr. Burford for twelve years, and knows liiiu to bo a lino lawyer and a perfect gentleman, ilis irreproachable reputation will make him absolutely unapproachable by those in uuimucH which uru

PEOF. OOULTER AND HIS WOEK.
The Result of An Interview By Au Inuianapolis News Reporter. A News correspondent met Prof. Ooulter last night and found him rejoiced that the blow and dust of com. mencemont week have gone by and the air is now dear for scientific work. Prof. Ooulter says ho knows no difference between term timo and vacation so far as botanical work is coueorned. Ho is at w«rk on the systematic classitloation of tho Texan flora for the Agricultural Department, and will soon publish an oxtensive report, paying particular attention to tho geographical of plants, which lie regards as the greatest problem in botany, and one which oau be better solved by au exhaust vie study of the ten thousand species of plant iu North America than by tho study of those of any other continental area. Professor Ooulter stands at tho head of systematic botany in America since the death of Professor Gray. Ho has most of the plants of North Amorioa in his herbarium tho niostextonsivooutsidoof Oambridgo. Seven of the pest-graduates of Wabash will stay with him this summer and work on the botany of Texas and O .mteniala. Immense bundles of pressed plant 3 are sent to h:m from tho latter region, and about ever third spooies found new to science. The dowers are boiled iu test tubes, opened and analjzed readily. Thoro is great enthusiasm in the work. and Professor
Ooulter will be in tho laboratory all summer, except when tho American Association for advancement of Science is iu cession.—Indianapolis News.

PETTIT IN 00UET.
The Distinguished Prisoner Makes His First Appearance in tho Montgomery Oounty Oourt.
A JouitNAt, reporter got wind of the fact that W. F. Pettit was to appear bofore tho court this morning and visited the jail •. oforc tho nrrival of tho Deputy. Mr. Pettit wos engaged in reading law as usual. Rulfcot Canoodle occupiid the adjoining cell and wus calling lustily for a needle and thread. Ho interrupted the conversation of Mr. Pettit and tho reporter by requestiug the loan of au extra large pants butto:: and having obtaimd it retired iuto his cu tojrnry state of iunoououB desuetude Mr. Pettit stated that tho joint board of Commissioners of Montgomery and Tippoeanoe oounties had called upon him yesterday together with John L. Goben and several others, forming quite a select and fasliionublo loveo. He further said that now commencement was over ho was prepared to receive the visits of the reporters who usually lie jkod to him for newB oud solace when other channels failed. Tho reporter was just prepared to ask him if he would desire to liaro his trial come oQ' during the session ol the Methodist conference, when Mr Davis arrivod to conduot hJm to tho court. Mr. Pettit quickly doffed his dressing gown and after shining liis shoes, put on his Prince Albert oout and slouch hat and walked to tho oourt house with Mr. Davis and the reporter. Ho took hiB seat with his attorneys, Stuart, Davidson, Gay lord aud Kumler, just opposite tho proseoutor's table, where sat A.R.Audorson,G.W.Haywood and W. C. Wilson. Rut a very few had rojognizod Mr. Pettit as he passed the streets and consequently but a very few wore in tho oourt room. Tho Fletchor-Crabbs case was in progress but tho witnesses wero exouscd and the Pettit caso called. The stato moved tho piisouor be arraigned for trial, but pending this motion the defenso entered a special appearance and a motion under it wos to tho efl'ect that the case be remanded to Tippecanoe county under the plea that Judge Langdon had stiuok out certain olnusos in Mr. Pottit's affidavit for a change of venue. Tho defense also entered an objection to the court's making any ruling iu tho oaso this term. The oourt at first overruled their motion, but upon tho defense cluiming that the matter was vital their interests and that tho time had been too short for them to preparo their argumont he gave them until
Monday to prepare. So tho subjeot of tho rdWudmeut will como up next Monday morning. During tho proceedings Mr. Pettit sat at his table with his hands foldod upon it, watching overy point with the keenest intorosts, pud looked more tho attorney than tho prisonor.
Tho attorneys in the oaso roturned to Lafayotto this aftoruoou. At the train Col. Wilson, of the prosooution, stated to Tnc
Jouunaij
roporter that the
movements of tho defense tsnded merely to tho dolayiug of the caso. He clarsically compurod Stumt in this matter to Cato of Roman litstory. Col. Wilson said that he did not believe thoro was tho slightest possibility of the remandment of tho case, and said that Mr. Pettit would, ho verily believed, be tried horo early in the September term. Mr. Stuart, of the defense, when questioned said he boliovcd the grounds for the remandment were well taken, but didn't know whether they would be sucoessfulor not. Ho said he had a good strong case but did not intend to show his hand until in tho oourt room. Ho declared himself ns highly pleased at the fair impnrt'al way in whioh
Tub Jouuxai,
had treated the c.se, and said he firmly believed in his client's innocence.
