Wheu they arrived nt the bank of the river to be conveyed to the opplsite side the ferryman, in stead of usiritf the weight carrying, llat ferry, contented himself with the ordinary ferryboat, into which the children all crowded together, so thut the gunwale of the boat, which should have leen thirty live centimeters out of the water, wiis de prcj»?*ed to the water's level.

Nevertheless, the boat, with its living freight, crnssed to within a few yards of the opposite shore, when it. suddenly capsized and sank, carrying most of the children in it to the bottom. Of course 1 like London—only too well perhaps. The men 1 constantly mix with and tulk with are widely read, accomplished, very clever, very winy. Dullness they hold to bo the one cardinal sin. And they so rain down epigrams upon a poor fellow's head that one has constantly to carry a mental as well as a material umbrella. I!ut still I long much now and then to .*i:ap. f.,r a few hours from all this desperate cleverness, this flippancy that hohls nothing sacrcd, this determination that no feeling of reverence bhull blunt a joke, this rasping spirit which enacts an apology for a lielief in heaven ur in hell. When I mixed in Scotland with God fearing men who were not at all clever, who had little reading and 110 wit, who could listen hut not talk, I felt that, though they lacked much, they lived in an atmosphere of such purity as educated young Lmdon does not share.
