CHILDREN'S DAY.
It is Appropriately Observed at Most of the Churches Yesterday. At tlio First l'resbyteriau church tho Children Day oxercises consisted of songs, loading portions of tho scriptures and tho repetition of tho Lord's prayer by tho infant class. Prof. 12. C. Winslow made an address to tho children, and tho collection from the classes and the audience amounted to &12.82, Tho infant clusu contributed S--W, being tho largest amount by any one class.
given
Childrens' Day was observed at the Methodist church yosterday in an appropriate way. The ohureli was beautifully decorated aud a number of children rendered suitable services. There wero six infanta baptised and a collection of 812..'if) raised for tho educational fund. In tho evening Rev. II. M. Middletou preached to a largo and attentive congregation. A powerful sermon on conscience, taking as his text tho verse, "I Exorcise Myself to llavo a good Conscience toward God aud Man."
At tho Christian church yesterday morning the pulpit was occupied by llev. Oscar Lune, of Hainbridge, who had exchanged pulpits with his brother in this city. A largo audience was present aud the sermon was a practical one, the speaker addressing himself to the uhllrch going people, and discoursed on their duties as Christians. Iu tlieeveuing a large aiidiei.o. had congregated only to meet a sad disappointment. Elder Moll'ett aunotiuced the sad facl that Mr. Lane had received a telegram from his brother announcing the sudden death of bis child. .Services wero abandoned and the congregation went sadly lion o. "Come take my vokenpou you," was was Dr. Cunningham's text yestorduy morning. To those who know tho secret of bearing Christ's yoke it not only is not burdensome but in fact the easio ind best way to go through tho world. True, some things will have to be given up. Tho prodigal sou when he returned to his fnther's house had lost some things, had lost his pride, his conceit aud even his foituno but ho had gained through his experience what was far more valuable, a character. To wear tho Christian yoke is to rid your self of all the evils engendered by self ishness for selfishness is the absolute contradiction of Christianity. At the closo of the services three persons joined church by letter aud six by confession of faith. In tho evening llev. E. 1* Thonibon, of Denver, was greeted by an unusually largo congregation to which ho preached an unusually strong sermon fiom the text, "Put on Christ."
At the First Buptibt church iu the morning Rev. CI. P. Fuson discussed the seventh subject iu tho series: 1!HOHNER.vno.N, Text: 2d Cor., v, 17. 'Therefore if any man bo IU Christ he is a new creature old things are passed away behold all tb'Hgs have become new." lio said: "For our uatural state we are totally depraved and can render no real service to Uod until our hearts are changed. The Holy Spirit in regeneration gives a holy disposition to tho mind: destroys permanently the love of siu iu tho soul and transforms into the image of God." Tho senium was clear aud strong, and every point so forcibly illustrated as make it eoniuciug.
Tho church voted to accept tho nvitatiou of Dr. Tnttlo aud unite iu the services at Center church next Sunday morning.
Tho eveniug sei. Ice wrs a soi vice by tho children consisting of songs and leclamations. Very early the cbi'ich 3 lilh 1 to i's utmost capacity aud many turned away unable to obtuin staudiug room. Tho decoration of tho room was of marked tasta and beauty. The program as carried out was very pleasing aud highly ontertiiring. Little Miss Pitman aud Miss Stouocypher deserved speoial mention, for tho excellent manner iu which they rendered their selections. All did well iu their recitations and tho eveniug was a vory enjoyable one to all who wero present.
A Large Funeral.
At St. Heruard's church at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon was assembled a large concourse of sympathizing friends to pa}- respects to the mortal romaius of M. F. Dovan. llev. J. 11. Diaueu preached an eloquent aud appropriate sermou, taking as his text, "Remember thy Creator iu tho Days of thy Youth." ilo showed how applicable tho words were to the deceased, who was not only a Catholic in name, but in practice, he having served God iu his youth as well as iu the time of allliction. The remains were followed to tho grave by ouo of the largest procossions that ever wended it way to Calvary cemetery. The pall bearers wero members of the Catholic Legion from Lafayette, the deceased being member of that society. They wero proceeded by some of his associates bearing lloral tributes.
Carrier Pigeons Released.
T'lio American Express office received this morning a box containing four carrier pigeons with instructions that they be released not later than 10 o'olock a. iu. and not. at all if it was raining. They wero from tho "Cleveland Homiuy Company." Just at ten this morning Louis Boocher released tho birds at tho Vaudalia depot. Tlioy started in an easterly direction but soon veerod to west aud sailed over tho court house. From thero tlioy wont BOUtli and when last soon wero again flying oast toward thoir homo in Clevolaud.
