That Is tho regular thing for Herkimer County wives to do, but Mrs. Undloy was making nn unusual spread, because frionds wero expected next day. Mrs. Ijindley, as fast as her doughnuts wero frlod, spread thom on the dining-room table to cool, and after a little, when tbo pies were baked, placed them In tho windows on the cool side of the house. It was hot work frying doughnuts and baking pies In such weather, as every good hoOsowife knows, and nobody could blaino Mrs. Llndloy for going into tho parlor when it. was all done to look over tho Hoonvillo Herald that bad arrived tho night before, and had in it all tho nows from the country side.
While she sat there in the big rocking chair fanning horseif she heard through tho open window the hollow thud of a pie that had been knocked out of the window and had landed bottom side up on the veranda floor. Very much astonished she ran out to soo what had happened. There was the young

Meantime Ossian was training it as dogs are trained. It was taught to sit upon its haunches and fold its paws when told that it was time to pray. caro had to be observed to keep it out of mischief. Its latest exploit has set the wliolo country side talking. Although by no means a drinking man, Mr. Lindley on occasions takes a bit of strong liquor, and the particular favorite which pleases him most is good whisky. Ho keeps a buttle of it in tho house all tho timo, and takes three or four drinks a year from it. Last Saturday night, after a hard tlay's work in tho rain, Mr. Lindley concluded that a drop, with hot water, sugar, and nutmeg, just before going to bed. would about touch t.lio spot, and so Mrs. Lindley mixed it for him. Then the family wont to bod and to sleop.
As tho first rays of sunshine camo Into tho family bedroom on Sunday morning Mrs. Lindley awoko hearing somo noise in tho kitchen. Going softly to tho kitchen door she poepod in. Thero was the 'coon on the table. Bosido it lay tho whisky bottlo uncorked, while a creat puddle of tho liquor had spread over tho table and run down on tho floor. Tho 'coon paddled about in tho liquor, stopped now and then to lap it, stood still, opened and shut his mouth hilariously, jumped up and down, ran to tho edge of tho tablo and looked at the puddle on the floor, jumped down and drank of that, arched its back and spread its tail, jumped back and drank more, rose on its hind logs and shook its head from sido to sido and wagged its tail, and then jumped sideways until it missed its footing and tumbled over on tho floor. Thero it lay on its back and kicked and squealed. Tho 'coon had uncorked tho whisky and was drunk. Words fail to convey an adequate idea of the comical and human actions of tho drunken boast.
Not only was it human in its cups, it was human in recovering. It eventually got sloppy drunk and was laid out ln tho barn by Ossian, where it remained nntil Monday morning. At breakfast timo it was scratching at tho kitchon door and Ossian let it in. It was a pioturo of woo. Ossian offered It a plato of potato and gravy, but it turned away in disgust. Mr. Lindley laughed vory boartily at that and called for tho whisky bottle that had an ounoo or two loft in it. A toaspoonful was taken by tho 'coon with a look of gratitudo in its oyes that was touching. Then a saucer o'fcoffoo and milk without sugar was aocepted, aftor which a bit of toast was caton daintily, and then tho 'coon was roady for another sleop. It was two days in rccovoring from tho sproo.—N. Y. Sun.
