Whou leamo to this city there was but one Court and two Justices of iho I eiw:o. 'J. ho one Court did all of the United States business and utl of tho other business exoeptprobute, and oouHequentiy it wus about throe years behind. liud time to Btudy alout tho situation und consequently after tho l-icgiblutui-o met in thu now Stuto, cowMMiecil to agitate the mutter for two more Judges, and consei|uoutly a bill was passed, giving tliin oouiity throo up no an have three (Superior CJourts in session all tho time, one probate court and two Justices ol tho l'oaco. Thov are all busy.
There area number of men from your county in bin country. James E. Zook, formerly of Wuynotown, has located in Kittjup county and pre-empted one hundred and sixty uoros of land, staid it for six months and thou- proved

Sylvester McCoy and llobort Hoffman, from near Garfield, have eaoh entered one hundred and sixty acres of lund in liipsup couuty and have prpved un.aud now have good farms worth from 81,500 to $2,000 each. Hilas llodgers, from neur your city, iB employed in a rostaurant at §80 a month and his board, 'i'ho people Jrom Montgomery county who have moved West, as far as I know, are doing well. Mr.Thompson and I have got a good start and are well pleased with our situation, and are doing financially bottor than we could have done hud we remained in your oity. Wo both are perfectly infatuated with this country and have no desire to ever again return east of the Cascade mountains to live. Wo never want to pass under the soorcliing sun of July and August in Indiana, aud the winter cold of Indiana's December and January. While wo have been in this city, several Indiana men have called upon us, aud we are always glad to welcome them.
In sixty days we will be loeated in our new office which we have rented in tho Occidental Block—one of the finest and most prominent blocks in the city. Our otlioe will be on the first floor above tho stores, three roomsonYesler avenue on the side near the Yesler cable road, and one room fronting on Second street near the Second street electric road, so that we are oonvenient to the business part of the oity. While I have only boen in this city for nine months, yet our firm is. employed in quite a number of important actions now pending in court. We have eighty-two cases in tho Superior court of this oounty, and one damago suit in the United States Court, and one large damage suit in the Pierce County Superior Court and one foreclosure in Snohomish. The firm is also attorneys for some good estates. Mr. Thompson and I lost no opportunity to make friends and acquaintances and build up a good business. When we left your oity we determined that wo would succeed in this now country. At first there were discouragements, yet we have surmounted all obstacles, and are taking our plaoe among the leading firms of the Pacific ooog1
I have inoreased my library to somo considerable extent, and our new partner has been increasing his, so that we are prepared for any kind of litigation. Mr. Edaenis a German 40 years of age, of sound health, industrious, and speaks five or BIX different languages which enables us to work up a good practice among the foreign element.
Mr. Thompson and I had boon figuring on coming to this oity for three years befort wo made tho move, and were studying geographical surroundings and commercial location of the place, and wo intended to get here before it was admitted as a State, so that we would bo what would be termed "old citizens," and wo were more thoroughly posted upon the country than persons at first supposed, and we made the move with no intention of ever turning back.
Since dictating the above to our ston ographer, I noticed by tho morning paper that a resolution was passed by the City Counoil, on last evening, providing for the extension of the city limits, and describing the territory to bo taken in. If tho vote of the oity aud suburbs is in favor of the resolution, then the city limits will oovor an area of nearly twelve miles square. This will give your readers some idea of the size of this great city of the Northwest.
In order lor people to enjoy themselves, it is not necessary to keep a horse and buggy as it is in your oity. There are near forty milos of cable and eleotrio railroads, and twenty milos of steam railroad, which will nearly all bo within tho oity limits. Persons desiring to take recreation can ride forty miles upon the cablo and eleotrio roads for 60 cents, and can ride twenty miles upon the railroad for 25 cents, so that they can ride fully sixty miles for 85 cents eaoh, and can see more territory and have abettor pleasure trip than they could possibly have in any buggy with horseB. If they eo desire, when they get to tho 'akos, they can toko a ride on a little steamer around the lake for two hours, for 10 cents, or tlioy can employ a little sail boat and have it manned, and take a ride for 25 conts apiece, or they can hire a little row boat and go out themselves for a very small sum. Thoro are excursions running at different times on the Sound, and persons can go upon the excursions and spend a day, take their basket of provisions with them and enjoy themsolves for the small sum of 50 cents, or they can step upon the numerous steamboats and steamships that' are constantplying to and fro on the Sound, and can make around trip to Tacoma, Olympia, Port Townsond," or any of tho seaport oities and return, the same day, and take their meals upon the boat and everything is made pleasant, comfortable and agreeable.
There is another matter that I have omitted and that is the people of this great State are cosmopolitan and are from every State in tne Union, and every nation known to civilized men, and from tho islands of the sea, so that no person need have any trouble in finding associates of his or her olass. We huve in our midst the learned and*
the unloarnod, people of all national ties und color. In mentioning the people from your county, 1 overlooked some that your people perhaps would be interested in. lvev. Elliot Browu, a former Wabash student and one of tho college quartette that accompanied me in the campaign ol 1882, is tho Pastor of the First Presbyterian ohuroh iu this oity, to whioh myself and wifo belong. Mr. Von loble, also a graduate of Wabash Oolpracticing law. 1'red West,'son of 1 nomas J. West, north of your city,

Samuel MoCullough.sou of Maxwell MoCullough, east of town, hns ujaclo some good iuvustmentH in real estate, and is also engaged in the carpenter business. John A. I arker, formerly ol your city, is located in lauomu, and doing a fair legal practice, and lias made a largo sum of mouey iu tho real estate business aud is considered fairly well off. The Indiana men have prospered in this State. Gov. l-'orry iB from near Port Wayne. Hon. John L. Wilson, momber of Congress, and Hon. John B. Allen, United States Senator,' are both from your county. Hon. J. ft. Kinnear, one of the leading State Senators, who was a promiuent candidate for Governor, is a nativo of your State. Tho Hon. W. H. Calkins, now of Tacoma, was Offered the appointment to one of the Superior Judgeships, but refused to accept tho same, as he was doing bettor and could not afford to take it. Ho is also mentioned as leing a suitable candidate for United States Senator in the near future.
Prom tho way this oity and country are growing, there can bo no doubt that iu IOES than ton yours, there will bo at least one hundred thousand inhabitants in tho Queen City of the northwest. There are new industries being started all the time, und there are more chances in business for men of means, iutelligenc and industry to succeed in this State, than in the Eastern States. There is room for all men who are so situated that they can change their location to build up here. Of course they will have to work hard, and use their experience and their brains, as tho men who have oome are among the smartest and most intelligent men of tho world. They havo left their homes ond surroundings and oome to this country to succeed in life. They aro mostly industrious, Blirewd and energetic, and thoy have an eye to business. Fortunes are made in a short time by judicious investments, and in trading, but while that is true, it requires capital, energy und good judgment to succeed, and persons who are ambitious, reasonably intelligent, and with some capital to invest can do well in this country at olmost any business they desire to take hold of. But men without capital, who are not mechanics aud laboring men, do not have much chance. It is not advisable for them to come. Of course young men without families, who aro willing to take their ohances stand a better show to get employment than they do in the East, if they have
Bome
experience in
business, are sober and industrious, Respectfully, Jons E. HUMPHRIES.
