S THE PETTIT TESTIMONY.
Dr, Black on the Stand—Mrs. Whitehead Boluses to Answer. Iq the Pettit ease yesterday at Lafayette l)r. D. It, Black, the consulting physician at the last sickness of Mrs. Pottit, tostiflod that lie had given tx oortilicato stating tho causo of the death as malarial poisoning that while he was present there were no 83 inptoiiis of strychnine poisoning, Mrs. hitchoid was subpoenaed to appear aiul produce the lotters received by hor n. Eaton, Ohio, from Pettit. She declined to answer tjuestions for reasons assigned in a paper which she asked Ool. DeHart to read to tho court. The court would not recoive tho paper or allow it to be read. She said she did not feel able to answer questions. The witness was removed until to-morrow morning and the matter taken under a Ivisimient by tho court. John Acheson. a store keeper at Odoll, testilled that Pettit had come into hit store on July 1 and asked if he sold strychnine that he did not sell him any and when asked what I10 wanted to use it for Pettit did not answer but passed out of tho b:iek door. This was during tho absence of -Airs. Pettit on a visit, and fifteen days beforo Ler death. In answer to a hypothetical question describing tho symptoms and death of Mrs. Pettit, Dr. 11. M. O'Feiral stated that iu his opinion death was oaused by strychnine. Another loug lotter explaining the sickness aud death of Mrs. Pettit to her sister, Mm. Shields was introduced. It was writteu by Mrs. Whitohend and is similar iu detail to the oue. written by Pettit to the same •|dv.'!\
He Set His Specks,
T. U. Collins has turned chicken fancier, and is known as "Hayes" by all his neighbors, a name at which his Bourbon soul revolts. But Tom has a dozen Shanghai hens with no foathers to speak of 011 their Dodios, in which he takes much pride. Every day bafore he eats dinner he goes out to pet his hens, and will sit and watch them by the hour. Yesterday afternoon he could not lind his speetaoles high nor low, and was desperately distressed. At noon to-day he fouud them under one of his hens and an egg in his vest pocket. Ho had taken off his spectacles aud set tjiem aud put the egg in his pocket.
The Tramp Nuisance.
Another large detachment of tramps arrived in the vicinity of the Junction last night and tc-day began their depredations over tho city. They are as a rule a villainous looking Sbt of scoundrels, and are insulting and abusive to all who refuse them food or clothing. Tho country is swarming with tramps and it is absolutely unsafe for a lady to be left alono in some portions of the city. A fewGatlingguus scattered over the city might help solve the tramp problem/ 1

An Old Paper,
A newspaper a day old is devoid of interest. But when it attains an extreme old age tho interest is revived. Iu the show window of O. L. Host is a papor 117 years old. It is called tho Baltimore mid Maryland Journal and Advertiser aud is full of curious advertisements and long dull reports of English politics. Tho owner of this valuable curiosity is G. W. Houk, of the southern part of the county.
Cory's Assistants to be Arrested. Tho Indianapolis Journal says: "Tie !5oono county grand jury haa been called together in special session to investigate the manner in which the escapo of Ed Corey was ected. The four Crawfordsville poople who asked that Cory bo allowed to eat dinner with thorn will probably be iu the arms of tin law before long."

PEIYATE OPINION MADE PUBLIU
Ira McConnell, Receiver of the Water Works: "Although the time for making now contracts is not until April 1, quite a number have already come to mo see ubout their water services lot tho ooming year.'*' Some have made contracts, other decided not to take water at all. There are about COO consumirs taking water at thoir residences. Less than half of these will have to pay more rent than heretofore. The reason they will have to pay more is that they have paying say $6 for tho privilege of sprinkling 00 feet of street and using tho wator for sprinkling the neighbor's street, for domestio purposes, watering horses and in fact everything. Of course tho rent of such persons will be raised. On tho other hand over half tho consumers have been paying full rates and of oourse with those there will bo no trouble in making a contract. In fact in some cases tho rents will be lower than now, for the company proposes where a man uses water for sprinkling and domestio purposes tho rent on the latter shall be reduoed one-half. Besides our 500 consumers who pay rent we have about 100 who pay no rent at all. They go without leave or license to some one's hydrant day after day and when too cloBely watched go after night."
Capt. Elmore of tho Light Committee of the City Council: "Justus soon as the other two members of the Light Committee are able wo intend to get together aud do something. Mr. Hadley is on his way home and Dr. Duncan is recovering so it will not be long. We moan business. If tho city can saye money by doing its own street lighting of which there seems to bo iy doubt wo will havo a plant in running order by the time our contract with tho Water and Light company expiree. At the time that oontraot was Tiade it was considered a good one but things have changed since then although the company sayB it cannot do tho lighting any cheapor now tliau theu. We propose to have 100 lights instead of 73 and at a cost of not more than $4,000 per year which is a little over one.half what the company would ask. We are in receipt of numerous lotters from electric light monand Mr. Danderdale, of the W9stingli0use alternating system was here last week."
