MEMORY OF SNAKES.
rhs Shining Stone Which tlio C»lrn Carries tu Attruvt Vlrefllon. Tho cobras aro. perhaps tho only nerpenta which will cat insects. Tlu-y feed on ants, grasshoppers, a variety of beetles, etc., but seem to have a special preference for fireflies, perhaps liecauso the latter can bo caught at much more easily than any other kind of insect. I hftvo often for hours winched cobras in tho grass catching the fireflies, darting tibout hero and there, a process which requires considerable exertion on tho part of tho serpent. Now, every entomologist knows that tho flying 1ampyridiu consists entirely of males. The females, which nre not very numerous, aro much larger and cannot fly, as they liavo only rudimentary win^s. They sit quietly in tho grass, emitting a grccniMh light, which is much stronger than that of tho males, and fades anil becomes brilliant at regular intervals. If a glowworm bo watched for a time, a steadv current of male insects will Ihj observed flying towards it and alighting inclose proximity.
Now it so happens that tho naja-kallu, this little pebble of clilorophann or fluorspar, emits in tho dark a greenish light, which is so much Iiku that of the female lampyris that it is an easy matter to deceive tho male firefly with it by setting it up as a decoy. Tho cobras have gradually come to take advantago of an experience made by them, accidentally, I dare say, thousands of years ago. It may frequently happen, for instance, that a cobra finds ono of these shining stones iu the gravel of dry river beds (where they aro by no means uncommon), being attracted to it by its glow at night, and taking it for a glowworm. It would, then, at any rate, notice that the fireflies could bo caught much more easily and quickly iu tho neighborhood of that shining object than anywhere else, and would habitually return to it. .Several cobras might thus coino together, and there would IKS competition, and from this moment to the finding out that success iu capturing fireflies depends on tho possession of this phosphorescent pebble, and to tho seizing of it in order to prevent another snake monopolizing it, is, in my opinion, no great step, and involves no exceptional powers of reasoning. The cobra carries it about, and soon learns to treasure it, for il affords it an easy means of getting its living
All it has to do is to deposit the stone in the grass at night, and the obliging insects literally fly down its throat.
There are even reasons for believin that no individual experience is now necessary to causo any cobra to act in this manner, but that even a young cobra, on finding such a stone, will instinctively take it up and use it in Lite manner I have dcscrilied. For it must lie borne in mind that there is an inherited raco memory among the lower animals which is often far stronger than the memory gathered during tho short life time of the individual. What causes a blind kitten to spit and put up its hack if a dog is brought near il? It never saw a dog, never saw anything, yet it knows there i-s some danger ahead. Thus the accumulated experience of tho cobra's ancestors during countless generations now causes it to act in a manner which wo refer to instinct.
Such aro tho remarkable facts connected with the naja-kallu, tho cobra's shining stone. Who can tell whether tho old traditions of snakes carrying precious stones, of which wo still find traces in our fairy tales, may not have their sourco in some such fact :is this?— Professor II. Iiensoldt in Harper's.
Improved Dumbbell.
In athletic exercise, which now plays such a prominent part in hygienic cult, the old notion of severo laborious exertion at the outset lias been utterly exploded, and modern scionce has decided that light and very gradually increasing tasks are produclivoof the best and most lasting results. In dumbbells of the usual construction tho athlete must have a large assortment of gradually increasing sizes, and unless a great many are kept tho transition to a heavier pair cannot bo made in tho moderate gradation that is advisable. To meet this contingency an improved dumbbell has been devised. It consists of two hollow wooden Bhells through which tho handle passes. These balls can bo the receivers of a large or small quantity of sand or shot as may be desired, and thus the weight of the dumbbell can be graduated with the greatest nicety.—Now York Commercial Advertiser.
Tlie Cctton In the Air.
The players form a ring and join hands. A small bit of jeweler's cotton or a light, feather is then thrown into the air, and they try, by blowing it upward, to keep it fronil falling. If they blow too hard, tho cotton is driven away if too gently, it falls, and tho game is finished. The interest consists in directing it, if possible, to one or other of the players, who pays a forfeit if it falls before her. All this must be done without letting go of hands. Tho game may also be played sitting round a table.—Ladies' Homo Journal.

If, by chance, I happen to go into a strange cigar shop ant the man at the case nflks me if I want an ini|oried cigar I make up my mind that he doesn't know his business or that he takes me for a fool. A man is supposed to know what sort of a cigar he watils and ought to say BO at the start. An imported cigar, at the average cigar stand, at the common price, is a delusion and a snare. If I g0 into a place where I ai'i not known and buy a cigar I am always particular to notico the box. If the cigar does not fit the box I know the seller hits practiced some deception. Uu has put a different cigar in the box than the olio called for by the brand. If he is mean enough to do this hu is mean enough to palm otT a I"or cigar. 1 am not a cynic in anything but I have noticed one thing ig my trawl*—it is easier for a man to btswindled on cigars than anything thai grovfs, runs or stands still. If the cigar man doesn't know you you get the worst of it.—Chicago Tribune.

It is said that stammerers rarely if ever show any impediment to speech when speaking iu whispers. On this fact a new method of treatment has been advocated by Dr. Coen, which is as follows: In the first ten days speaking is prohibited. This will allow rest to the voice, and constitutes the preliminary Btago of treutment. During the next ten days speaking is permissible in the whispering voice, and in the course of tho next fifteen days the ordinary conversational ione may Ixs gradually employed. —New York Telegram.
