The Gun Olub,

About a half dozen devotees of the gun met at the oflioo of Ed Yoris last evening for the purpose of taking preliminary steps toward the organization of a gun olub. As it is impossible to have a club without suitable grounds a committee to find such was appointed, consisting of Ed Voris and D. L. Lee.

The Opera.

Thero is no particular reason for "kicking" on last night's opera for it contained pretty music, the chornses were largo, all tho soloists had good voices and everything passed off smoothly. But for some reason the performance did not elicit any enthusiasm on the part of the large audienoe. PerhapB it was because people expeoted as good a thing as when "Nanon" was present here by the same company which they had a right to, and were disappointed. However, in spite of all, it was an evening pleasantly spent and no one regrets having been there.

Tho first six months wus a fight "against tho lield," but I am "through the ruck" and "drawing away" in a most satisfactory style. Now that is about all the "horse talk" I know. To put it in deoent language, I am succeeding, am delighted with the people and tho country, and havo large faith in the future."

fraglo End of a Young Lady's Life at Joliet, HI.

LITERALLY HOUNDED TO HER DEATH.

in Unkuown And Unprincipled Cur P#r••ootM Mlai Jestte Z« White Until, Made Doaporate, She Shoots Herself Through the Heart.

WOIIK OF A VILLAIN.

JOLIRT, 111., March SO. Jessie Z. White, daughter of James S. White, an old citizen of this place, committed suicide Wednesday evoning by shooting herself through the heart. She was noticed driving up and down Chicago street In a buggy early In tho evening. When opposite the opera-house and near the entrance to the Ilotol Monroe she was seen to rein her horso and stop. She leaned forward and plckgd up a pasteboard box from the bottom of tho buggy, opened It, took out a revolver, and placing the muzzle against hor left breast flrod. Her arms flew up In the air, and as she fell forward in the buggy tho rovolvor dropped into the street in the rear of the buggy.

The horse, Instead of being alarmed at 0 vb report of tho revolver, turned toward tho curbing and stopped directly in front of the Hotel Monroe. A number of citizens on the opposite side of tho street heard the report. One ot thejn, John McGraw, rushed toward the buggy and was just in time to catch Miss Whlto in his arms as she was about to pitch hoad-flrst into the street McGraw oarried the girl upstairs and into tho parlor of Hotel Monroe, where she was deposited on a lounge. A basty examination was made and it was found that she was shot directly through tho heart, and after giving ono or two gasps she expired. The excitement on the street was intense. A thousand people soon thronged the halls and offieos of the hotel. In the basteboard box found in the buggy was a lady's pocket-book and a letter, the envelopo of which was addressed "To My Dear Oiesat Homo."

Miss Jessie Z. White, the dead girl, was a daughter of James B. White, who has been a resident of the city for many years, residing on tho West side at 003 Nicholson street. About three years ago Miss Jessie was brought prominently before the public by tho persecutions of an anonymous let-ter-writer. Every young man who met the girl at a party or a dance, or who even received an introduction to her, was tho recipient of scurrilous lotters. SSie younsr men receiving theso letters—all written in an assumed hand—turned thom over to the State's Attorney or the father of the persecuted girl.

All the local newspapers received letters directed against the elrl by the same person and In the same handwriting, and of similar purport Police and detectives ,woro put on the watch for the persecutor, and finally the cousin of Miss Jessie, Mr. David White, was arrested and tried In the circuit court, the result being that he was simply bound over to keep tho peace. Numerous letters were read in court from the unknown persecutor of Miss White* warning hor that ho would kill her on a certain day that ho had opportunities to kill her at the opera-house, but was afraid of killing some one else.

Letters from the same person in the same hand, but purporting to como from Miss White, wore also read. They woro addressed to undertakers, to liverymen and to local newspapers, giving directions as to her funeral, shroud and place of burial, with date of death and funeral.

After the trial was over it was hoped by tho frlonds of Miss White that she would be left in peace, but tho persecuting letters still kept coming to her and all tho .young socioty mon in town. Letters were dropped on t"ho doorway, put under tho doors and s*nt every way, tin tho girl wao atrald to go out of the house. Finally Miss Jessie was Boot away for awhile to tho East, but this did not stop tho letter-writer, and after three years of this kind of torture the poor, hunted girl became so distracted that she could stand it no longer and took her own life.

Procuring a rovolvor she wrote hor last words to her loved ones and set out to rido about tho town to greet hoifriends for tho last tlmo. The letter found in the box wa8 as follows: "DRAB MOTHF.II AND AM. TUB DEAR ONES AT HOME: I tun tired of life and am going to shoot myself and deny the type-writer the pleasure of doing It. Thrrr years are long enough to be tortured by him, and thero are no prospects of any peace for me as long as I live. Inasmuch as he has promised to tako my llfe-and I really thlnlt he means to—he never shall, and If he found any pleasure In torturing me I hope he will be satisfled now. He has driven me to destroy my soul. All I have to say now Is for you to forgot and forgive mo for the wicked act I am about to commit. "Now, dear folks, I love you all so dearly that I could not live If any of you were to be taken from mo, so I want you all to think it all (pr the best that I should loavc this world llrst. I'ICMO grant theso few requests. Do not bury me on a rainy day. for I never liked a rainy funeral day. Engage Mr. Chamberlain for the undertaker and have Mr. Camp preach my funeral sermon at the Episcopal church. Sister Genevieve knows what songs I.want •ung at my funeral."

The lotter also named six young men of this city whom tho dead girl requested to act as hor pall-bearers. Miss White was but 19 years of age. The remains were viewed at the Ilotol Monroe by hundreds of Trionds last evening and the dead girl was finally taken to the home of l*r parontson Nicholson street, whore an inquest will bo hold this morning.
