KENNEDY IN KENTUCKY.

Some Interesting ReminiscenuB of theEarly Days of Paris. Tho Paris Kentuekiau-Citizen of last week tins the following concerning the presence of Hon. P. S. Kennedy in that city:

Mr. P. S. Kennedy, who is here from Cr: wfordsvillo, Ind., is engaged in a suit against the estate of David Penu, and will remain two or three weeks. Mr. K, is a native of this county, and his materal grandfather, in 1791, out tho first tree from the grove where the court house now htiimla. While iu our office Wednesday morning Mr. Koneedy met 'Squire John Cunningham, one of his old-time friends, whom he had not met for 41 years, and their talk of olden limes was very interesting. Peter Sharror, Sr., who was tho maternal grandfather of Mr. Kennedv, came from near Hagerstown, Maryland, to Paris, in the Spring of lTiU, hringiug with him in a (jnehorso wagon, his wife, two boys, and a heanty set of blacksmith's tools. Tho liret job of work ho did after his arrival, and beforo he built his shop, was to cut down a large oak tree where the court house now stands, for which ho reoeived .10 cents. Tho oldest boy, Phillip, was educated at Transylvania University, studied lnw with Judge Mills, and commenced a successful practice here, but the war of 1S12 coming on, he entered tho army as a Lieutenant of Infantry, uuil was killed at tho disastrous battle of tho Kiiisin, near w' ero Detroit now stands. Philip was one of the actors who iimused tho people by amateur theatrical performances in tho old Burr iiouse, in the winter of 1807-8, playing the difficult part of Julius C.vsar,in that colebriited tragedy. Jacob, the other sou, volunteered in Garrard's troop, and was wounded in the »rm at the siege of For ', Meigs, by tho bursting of a sheli, which somewhat disubled him for life, aud on account of which ho received a pension for many yoars. He was a noted drummer, aud served that capacity for the old Piiris Light Infantry, commanded by Capt. Leo Ban, anil afterwurds for the Bourbon Grays, under Capt. Bedford. Ho owned and lived for many years, iu the little brick house opposite the Fordham Hotel on M'lin street, ami died there about 1850.

Death of Aunt Sarah McOall. Sarah MuCall, widow of Samuel McCull mid fumiliirlv known as Aunt Surah, died Saturday morning at 10 clock at her home 8 miles north of the city. She had never recovered from a fall on tho ice of about a year ago and this was really the cause of her death. Sho was sixty-Hix years old aud well beloved and respected by host of friends. Tho funeral occurred t'lis morning at tho residence of Win. Duukle, at Liuden, and was preached by Kev. Mr. (.Juillen.

Death of Levi D. Hughes.

Levi D. UugliOK, formerly a resident of this city, died at his homo near Howe, Nob., on the '28th ult. Ho was a broth-er-in-law of the lato T. T. Scott and is well ami pleasantly remembered by all the older CIUKS of our citizens.

FIVE SEAMEN DROWNED.

Tliolr ISont Swamped by tlio Waves and All Are Lost. XORFOI.K, Va., March 17.—The steamer Defiance arrived here Sunday afternoon from Baltimore, and Captain Burgess reports that on passing York spit light-houso he saw a schooner ashore and sunk on tho spit near the northwest buoy. About tho same time a yawl-boat was seen, containing five men, leaving tho sunken schooner and putting for tho light-house. The wind was blowing with terrific force, and as tho boat approached the lighthouse it was thrown against tho iron piles and swamped, and all five men were thrown overboard. The men grasped iron rods of the piles in a desperate struggle for life, but tho waves dashed over them with such fury that they were soon overpowered, lost their hold and were drowned. It is supposed tbo schooner was an oyster vessel and was trying to run into the East river.

A CLOSE CAM.

BISMAKC K, N. D., March 17.—A scor# of the most prominont mon in tho State, smarting under the charges of rascality in connection with tho lottory boodlo scheme, Saturday attempted to wreck vengeance upon Condo Hamlin, a St Paul newspaper correspondent, and woro held at bay in tho Sheridan Houso lobby with a rovolvor by big Alexander McKenzie, who had but a moment beforo snatched tho weapon from Hamlin to save his own life.

When Hamlin, who had made wholesale charges of bribery against nearly all the prominent officials of tho State, appeared in tho Sheridan Houso oarly Saturday morning McKenzio, who had been bitterly attacked, approached Hamlin, grasped tho lapels of his coat and said: "What did you lie about me and my friends for in your payer?'' With this remark ho laid his hand upon Ilamlin's shoulder, whereupon the latter drow his revolver and attomptod to shoot. Mclvenzio grasped the weapon, thrusting a finger under the hammer just in timo to prevent its discbargo. Hamlin now made a dosporato struggle to release himself from the embrace ot the stalwart North Dakotan, and during tho strugglo tho crowd pressed forward, evidently intending to do violence to Hamlin. McKenzie wrenched the revolver from Hamlin's grasp and crowded the young man into the cornor.

By this time over twenty mon who had seen tho performance wero trying to get at Hamlin, but McKenzio turned upon tho crowd and warnod all to keep back. He would allow no ono to assault Hamlin. Seeing that tho crowd was thon determined to be revenged on tho correspondent, McKenzio, holding Hamlin's revolver in his hand, said he would shoot the first man that struck a blow. McKenzio, protecting tho man ^ho a moment boforo attempted to kill him, and dolns: It, too, with tho very weapon which had been aimed at him, was a sight so thrilling that the angry crowd cheered in spite of itself. Having saved Hamlin from violence McKenzio gave him his revolver, saying: "There, take your weapon and shoot me if you want to. I am not afraid of your gun!"

Hamlin put the gun in his pocket and said to McKenzie: "Let's shake hands and bo friends." "No," replied McKenzie. "I will not shake hands with you. You are not my friend and you have attempted my life."

Representative Stadelman thon approached Hamlin, and, reminding him tjiat he was ono of the mon whose character had been assailed, demanded the source of his information. By this timo the crowd was again surging around Hamlin, who, still fearful of violence, said his informant was Attornoy-General Goodwin.

McKenzie thon demanded that Hamlin go with him to an adjoining room, and warned all others to keep away. After being In the room several minutes th» train arrived and McKenzie escorted Hamlin to the platform, plaoing himself in tho door of the Sheridan Houso to keop back the crowd whilo the correspondent boarded tho train and was carried beyond tho reach of his enemies.
