H. P. Eneminger for Oity Maishal. Horace P. Eusminger is announced to-day as a candidate for City Marshal before tho Republican primary olection. Mr. Ensminger needs no iutroduotion to the people of Crawfordsvillo. He has served in this position for tho last quarter of a oeutury and to the great acceptance of tho publio in geuoral. All evil doors fear him and the good citizens respeot him. nominated he will be overwhelmingly elected over all opposition.
THE PRESBYTERIAN CREED.
Tho Oommitteo of the Crawfordsvillo .Fresbyteiy Reports in Favor of Revision. Tho Craw fordsvillo Presbytery will meet this eveniug in the First Presbyterian church at Lafayette for the purpose of acting on tho report of tho committee on revision of the oreed. Tho committee is composed of Dr It. J. Cunningham. Judge A. D. Thomas, Prof. H. Z. MoLain, and Rev. G. D. Parker, of Cutler. The report is as follows:
Tho committee appointed to prepare answers to tho questions of tho Geuoral Assembly's overture and submit thoso answers to the Presbytery respectfully reports:
Believing that our ohurch and our Confession should bo in hearty sympathy and accord, and believing that since tho Confession was formulated the ohurch has been brought into somewhat different relations with the truth, into a more irenio attitude toward other branches of Christ's church aud into a fuller realization of its mission, there fore in reply to the first question of the General Assembly's overture, "Do you desire revision of thetheConfession of Faith?" the Presbytery of Crawfordsvillo oaswors yes, meaning that some confos sional change is needed. In reply to the seoond "If so, in what respeot and to what extent?" the Presbytery answers that in its judgment no new dootrine is wanted but that such a revision of the Confession is desirable and necessary as will express the faith of tho ohurch in more scriptural proportion, giving much less relative prominence to statements of the divino sovereignty and foroo: 35nation and much greater emphasis and prominence to the divine compassion and fatherly, love, freely oiTering salvation to all mankind, which is the distinguishing charaoteristio of the gospel.
If however a mora npooilio answer is required wo rocommend especially tho following, viz:
Wo concur with the Presbytery of Now l'ork with regard to chapter iii. "Wo desire that tho third chapter after the first section bo so recast as to include these things only 'the sovereignty of God in relation to the general love of God for all mankind, the salvation in Christ Jesus provided for all, and to bo preached to every creature.'" "CHAPTER X. With regard to tho tenth chapter we recommend that the lirst section be amended by omitting tho word and thoso only that in tho third soction the word"eloot"be omitted before the word "infants" and before tho word "persons and that sootion four be so changed that it will not apleur to touch the damnation of all tin heathen.
CHAPTER XXV. With regard to the twenty-fifth chapter, wo recommend that after the word "Christ" the words "who is the supreme and only" be inserted, and that the word "thereof" be omitted and that the sixth section be omitted.
CHATTIER XXX. Wo recommend that the second section of tho thirtieth ohapter bo omitted.
These reoommendations are not intended to include all the points at which the Presbytery would welcome revision, but to indicate tho spirit and tone of such revision as wo desire.
Whatever other changes in the Confession these recommendations may render necessary in order to its consistency as a whole we feel may safely be left to such committee as the General Assembly may appoint.
It is tho judgment of this Presbytery that a summary or supplemental statement of our doctrine should be prepared by the church in such brevity aud simplicity as to adapt itself to use in the publio servioes of the ohurch and in the family.
Such is the report. It is the share of this community in a movement which fifty years from now will be looked b.K-k upon as one of tho great religious events of the oontury. It is expected that tho Presbytery will adopt tho report substantially as it is. Thoso in at tendance from hero aro Dr. R. J. Cunningham, Judge A. D. Thomas, Rev. T. D. Fyflb, T. H. Ristino aud W. 13. Lylo.
