Eastern Star Chapter to be Instituted. Martin H. Xtioe, P. M. U. of Indiana, will be here this evening to institute a chapter of the Eastern Star. The ohapter will be organized with thirty charter members. None bat Masons, their wires, daughters and Bisters are eligible for membership. The meeting will be held at Masonic hall and will begin at 7:30 o'clock.

The Schubert Quartette.

The famous Schubert Quartette, together with a lady pianist and a soprano will appear at the Y. M. G. A. auditorium one week from last night. From a host of favorable press notioes we seleot the following from the Oberlin College Musical Critic: "The ensemble work of the quartette seemed to me very successful in the points of time, blending shading and artaoulation. The expressions, as given in tone colorings, and fine measurements of tempo, was so good that it was gratifying and a real pleasure to hear them. Both in con, oerted and solo work there was a no. ticeable and refreshing abeenoe of Btraining. The ease and freedom of style is very commendable. Their numbers were delightfully rendered and have left a pleasasi impression on all who heard them."

Good for the Sons of Veterans. The Sons of Veterans of Tn^iana -*111 ask the next Legislature to set aside a suite of rooms in the State House to be used for museum purposes. The plan of tho order is to gather together and put on exhibition all tho relics of the late rebellion obtainable, including the preserved battle flags, wliioh are now in tho custody of the State Librarian. Several years ago Iowa enacted a law similar to the one we shall ask for, and tho museum in her State House attraots tho attention of visitors from all over the country. It is remarkable how many interesting things will find their way to a museum of this kind. Thousands of people have interesting relics in their posoession, but they will not givo them up unions they know they are to be placed in a museum pro too tod by the State.—Indianapolis News.

Ohaunoey Ooutant for Oonnoilman. Ghaunoey Coutant is announced as a candidate for Oonnoilman from the Third Ward before the Republican convention. Mr. Ooutant is the General Manager of the Dovetail Body works and is the inventor of the patent devioe used in the construction of bodies by that company. He has served in the City Counoil heretofore and his experience will be valuable to the city should he be chosen to represent that ward in the oity legislature.

Why do those who own real and personal property that is to be benefitted or injured, most frequently the latter, who pay ninety-five per cent of the taxes, allow those who pay little or none, to elect men to manage the affairs of the city and township, who have no interests at stake, save their pay and perqnisities of office? In so doing we, praotically, say to the incompetent and irresponsible elect, take charge of all my interests, social, moral, political and financial and do with them just as you deem best for your own and the interests of thoBe whom you look to for continuanoe in office. We know you to be inoompetent, and honest neither with yourself or us, but no one better seems ready to assume the place, and its you —or worse. Now you who do not admit the need of a guardian, pleat with honest sincerity, ask yourselves this question, and if after so, doing you do not firmly resolve, (.and act in accord therewith) to sin no more, it will unquestionably be your duty to emigrate, or attend your own funeral.

Ed Clay has resigned his position at John Hale's barber shop and has taken charge of a stable of fast horses at the fair grounds.

The notice in regard to the Odd Fellows sermon was wrong. -The sermon will be on the seoond Sunday in Maroh, instead of the first as was intended in the last notioe.

We will have two graduates this year in high school. It is needless to say we are proud af it and hope they may be a credit to the race thoy represent. They are Henry Brown, jr., and Wyekliff Smith. There are two others who are pushing themselves to the front and we look with pride upon them, namely Misses Mazy Hyatt andParthenia Woodford Let us olose up the ranks as the.e pass out, let others take there places and then we can say we are keeping step with time.

BKRI.IS, Feb. 31.—A heavy vote was polled at Thursday's elections for member£of the Relchstag and at many polling places the Officer* were overwhelmed with work. At midnight the apparent result 1b that the Government parties have lost fifteen scats and the Socialists throughout Germany have doubled their vote.' Horr Liebknecht and Herr Singer are elected. The latter, a Socialist, defeated Eugene Riohter, one of the most distinguished of German politicians and a loader of the German Liberal party. Singer is the man whose libel case against the Staatsburger Zeitung made a great deal of noise in December last. He gained his case and the editor was condemned to pay a fine, and this fine the Emperor remitted, using bis royal prerogative to set aside the verdict of a court of justioe. This made a great sensation, and dinger's candidacy became a sort of rallying center for protest against such an abuse of power. His election was an almost necessary consequenoe. Singer polled^ 40,500 votes, against 14,100 for Blchter" (German Liberal). In the Fifth district Baumbach, Deutsche Freisinnige, 10,000 Auerhacb, the Socialist, 7,333 Luedtke, Conservative, 4,324. Liebknecht received 80,898 votes.

The great feature of the eleotion Is the enormous and unexpected inoreate in the Socialist vote. This party has manifested strength in places where it was unknown before, and otfear parties will have to make a firm combination against It to stem the tide on- the supplementary elections. In the vote In Berlin alone the Sooiallst vote is increased 30,000, the Deutsche Freisinnige 3,000, and the Conservatives have lost 84,000.

Rlchter is elected for Hagen. The Socialists were successful at Elberfeld, Barmen and Frankfurt, and have good prospects for success in the second eleotlons at Stettin, Breslau and Bremen.

It is reported that a Socialist Is elected lor Konigsberg three Cartellers are' elected for Worms, in Dessau, two Poles for Posen,.and six ultramontanes for Cologne and Treves. Moltke was a candidate for the Fourth Berlin district

In Hamburg in the First and Second wards the Sooiallst majorities were overwhelming. In the Third the contest was closer, but the Socialises polled 5,000 votes.

Schiflel, Socialist, carried Chemnitx by 34,000 majority. In Leipsic, Geyer, Socialist, is elected in one district and a new election is required in another to decide between the Socialist and National Liberal candidates.

Auer and Stolle, Socialists, are elected in Zwickau and Dantzlo respectively. Meerane returns a Socialist and Melnlngen a Progressivist.

Schaefer Beats HeUer.

NEW YORK, Feb. SI. The match billlard tournament began at Chlckerlng Hall Thursday night The tournament is for 85,000. Tho contestants are Schaefer, Slosson, Daly, Heiser, Cattoq and Ives. Thursday night's game was between Sohaefer and Heiser. The former played the fourteen-inch bilkline game, and Heiser the eight-inch game. Schaefer won, the score standing: Sohaefer, 500 Heiser, 833. Schaefer's average was 11 7-39 that of Heiser, 113-29.

suflrage convention North Dakota was ohosen as the immediate battle-ground for tho eause. The speakers were Mrs. Julia Ward Howe, Rev. Annfe H. Shaw of Illinois, and Congressman Pioklor of South Dakota, who spoke briefly in support of woman suf-age.
