JAMES BROWN.
His Death To-day—A Good Man Gone to His Reward. The community was shocked to day at tho announcement of the death of James Brown, the veteran miller. Not many persons knew that how serious, ly ill and oven his family were not aware that lie would bo called so soon. Thirteen weeks ago he received a fall by which ho thought at the time that ono or two of his ribs were fractured. From this accident at any rate, dates his gradual decline, An internal abcess was formed aud about a week ago it broke which gave him great relief, but having penetrated tho vital parts he gradually grew weaker until he was released by death to-day at 12:15 o'clock. Mr. Brown was born in Butler county, Ohio, Fobruary It, 1825, aud consequently was Gfi years old. He was the son of Preserve and Margarot Brown, his father being a Pennsylvaniau and his naothor a Marylander. Ho was one of a family of tiftien children, eight of whom are Btill living. When ten years of age he came with his father to this State and settled iu Fountain county. At tho age of sixteen ho entered tho mill of Frank Fry, which stood just above tho Motion and just beyond tho depot,to learn tho milling business, which avocation ho steadily pursued for fifty years. He was the miller at Sperry's for twentyone years ton months. In 1874 ho built tho mill of which ho is still a part owner, corner of Water and Market streets. Except during a short time spout at Terro Hauto and Montezuma, wheruhe was engaged iu mills, he has been a resident of this city since ho wai sixteen years old. In 1841 ho was married to Miss Nanoy Ann Moudy, by whom ho had four children, throe of whom stdl survive him,' Elian, of this city, Preserve, of Oakland, and Mrs. Jennie P. ck am, of Logansport. His wife having died he was married the second timo in 1805 to Mrs. Maggie Brown, who still survives. For many years he was a member of the Christian church, but in 1805, under the ministrations of Kev. T. S. Webb, he transferred his membership to the Methodist church when for more than fifteen years he has served as one of theoffioialbonrd. He was a most exemplary man in his walk and conversation, and his Christian life while it was quiot was tender auil beautiful. He was as guileless and as trustiug as a child. He had made all the necessary preparations for the groat change. His earthly house was in per feet order aud ho frequently expressed his reivdiuoss to cross tho mystic river.
He will be buried under the auspicics of the Odd Fellows of which order he was an honored member. When the funeral services will occuir will be announced tomorrow.

At 10 o'clock there was an intermission during which many took tho opportunity to test some of the refreshments at the LaVota. Dancing ejded promptly at 12 o'clock. Tie strangers preseut were Misses Kate Staley, of Frankfort, Sallie Moore, of Paris, Ky., Elizabeth Tutour, of lteussolaer, oud Mi'. Arthur Fraley, of Terro Haute.

OOLLETTE NOTES.
Coyle, ox '91, has established a bran oh law ollico in Forest Hall, where tho embryo students of Blaokstono frequently-' meet to discuss the political questions of the day.
The oratorical contestants are havings a hard time agreeing upon judges. About a hundred men have been proposed but the inevitable kioker is always on hand withhis "I object 'for personal reasons".' They will probably have to call upon the Faculty _to select thom should they persevere in this present course.
The Freshmen accuse Christian of huving received, Bogi from Indianapolis for distribution to-night.
Numerous petitions were handed in yesterday praying for a holiday to-day. The petition was granted at a late hour yesterday afternoon and in oonsequneoe tho Freshmen and Sophs, are left free to spena the day in plotting and scheming preparatory to this evening and to-mor-row.
The Sophs, say they will break up the Freshmen parade to-morrow if they are nervy enough to attempt one.
The Juniors are having considerable trouble relative to the organization of tho Board of the Annual. Each of the fraternities are allowed two representatives on the Board, and, as was done last year, the Independents, or Barbs, two. Their request for tho Editor-in-Chief and four votes not being acceeded to they have withdrawn their support. I he rest of the classes, however, are not dismayed and will continue in their purpose of issuing the Ouiatenon again tit is year.
The Sophs.- scored another victory over the Froshies this morning. Hearing that Neal Watson was preparing another bauner for their parade of to-morrow tho Sophs, dccided to go after it. One of their men, protending to be a Freshman, pulled the wool over Watson's eyes and made off with it. It is lulto a gorgeous affair, red satin on one ^ide and on the other light blue. The class motto, "Cor Unum, Via Una," (One Heart, One Way) and "Class of '93," inscribed upon it. The flag is now in the possession of tho Sophs, their friends, and is being eagerly looked after by the bloodthirsty Freshmen.
The Subs are distributing cards containing tho ambitious inscription: "Beware! Hurrah'95! Look out for her." Even the youngsters are getting ambitious.
