A Long Needed Improvement. UJ)ou the suggestion of a gentleman who is always thoughful of the publio THE JOUUNAL would lay before its readera and particularly thoso three who are culled County Commissioners tho idea of establishing tv wator closet in the court house for the benefit of the women of tho county.. The men are provided for and there is an exoellent place in the east end of the oourt houso under tho Clerk's office whioh could be fixed up at slight expense as a retiring room for women aud children. No argument is- necessary for tho general public to understand tho urgent needs of such a convenience. That it has been neglected so long is one of the tilings post finding out. Commissioner Prico is heartily in favor of the improvement and wo believo if the matter was presented to the Board they would at ouoo recognize the necessity and act on tho suggestion at once.
War Eelics.
T. D. Brown has in his possession package of playing curds whioh are very unique in design and a curiosity to all who see thein. The cards area present from Gen. Lew Wallace to Mr. Brown and were sent to him by General Wallace from Baltimore in 18G5, being a portion of a lot of goods oonsficated by tho government at that time. Eaoh card, fifty-two ir number, bears the likuness of a rebel officer, full size of the card, and the spots or title of each card is located in tho upper left hand corner. JelTerson Davis is known in the dock as tho niuo spot of "spades," while uudornoatli the picture is printed: "Pres. Jellorsou Davis." Among other pio turcb is that of Gen. VanDorn, who represents tho "douoo of spades." Ho distinctly remembered by Capt. R. Bryant, who made his acquaintance at Holly Springs, Miss., Dec. 27, 1862, and was his unwilling guest for several days. Capt. Bryant thought at that timo, "deuce take him" but knew noth ing at Hie timo of VanDorn being the Deuce of Spades. This 27th day Deoombor was Friday, and Capt. Bty ant was taken prisoner by VanDorn Tho Captain has had an aversion for Fridays troin that day. Mr. Brown has preserved the deck of cards in exoellent coudition and values them as among his most interesting relices of the war. Tlioy wore exhibited last night to ttie Mud Turtle club and commented upon by all who saw them.

HITCHING PLAGES
The Question Nearing a Solution—The Committee Beady to Report. The Committee on County AlTairs of the Business Men's Association is ready to report on the question of hitching arrangements for the farmers' teams, but on account of the Association not having met, the report has not been submittod. Tho Association will, however, meet next Tuesday evening at which time tho report will bo received and acted upon. It is understood that the committee has mado arrangements for the use of tho Brown & Watkins mill lot, the Price lot, tho county lot on North street, the lot north of tho gas works and the lot in the rear of the Layne block on west \Main street, besides some other smaller places which can be used on days of a big crowd. The lots mentioned will aooommodate about one hundred and fifty teams. It is the intention to fit them up properly and throw them open to the publio so that the farmers when they come to the city with their teams will foel free to py them and not feel as though they wore trespassing on private grounds.
The work of the oommittee is certainly to be commended and it surely will meet with not only the approval of the Association but the community at large.
That Debate.
To the Editor of The our mil.
Aa we were misrepresented in tho last issue of your paper by a wolf in sheep's clothing, "Spectator," who was really Dr. Etter in disguise, we would like to have a word in reply. Now it is well known that a leading Prohibitionist of this community who acknowledges they were defeated that night, has been look' ing for someone to write that article but oould not find anyone in this commuu' ity so lost to reason as to do it. Then he appealed to Etter. Etter wrote the letter with his own hand and smuggled it in under some other Prohibitionist'i name. Now Doctor, when you stated that two speakers of the negative told you they were beaten, hadn't you for gotten the story of the "hatchet and the father of his country." Certainly tho moral of that story was lost on you. We can understand why you called yourself "Spectator." You wanted to create wrong impression and it wasn't far out of the way, as you failed to make a speech.. Now the facts are, you were telling the substance of that letter the street before tho type was set up, and when accused of writing it didn' deny it. We}will make you a present for every person you will find who will say you had tho best of tile argument in that debate, while we can point you to straight prohibitionists who say you wsre badly beaten. Again you say we we are afraid to meet you. You know you changed the question before you asked us. You want more ohances. You felt you needed them. We are reauy to meet you on the question as debated be" foro, at the Shady Nook school house as a oonvenient place, if tho house can b& obtained, any time you may select.
Now Doctor, we are ready to meet you, but hardly expect to have to do so, as it took two challenges to get you out before. But should you decide to acoept, bring along a few of your friends to toll you when you have had enough. We used our small shot before, but this time shall not stop short of cremation. In conclusion we will say, wo did not have anything to do with that lotter whioh he charged us with writing and defy him to show anything to the contrary. Au. LOOKA»II,L,

Frankio Jones, tho boy actor, and his company presented "The Sea Waif" at Music Hall last evening to a rather small uudienoo. Tho play was well presented and the special scenery was above the ordinary. The best part in the play is where Frankle Jones starts across the boy after some important papers for Miss Marjory. Frankio Jones undoubtedly possoses excellent talent which will unfold as he gets older and bring him wealth and fame.
