How a Surveyor Makes Money. At tho meeting of the Civil Engineers at Indianapolis yesterday it was tho! general opinion tlmt $3 per duv, tho' salary prescribed by law for county surveyors was too little. Tho remarks of those present showed that they ueiiriv all manage to make more than .53 per day and out of tho office some counted eight hours as a day's work, and thus always got a day and a half into one, but tho plan most followed was to employ deputies at 81.50 per day and cliorge tho county S3 for them, thus giving tho surveyor a prolit of §1.00 oil each man working under him.

W. T. BRUSH OHOSEN AS DISTRICT .. COMMITTEEMAN.

Resolutions Endorsing the Administrati. 11 of President Harrison—A Harmonious Gathering.

Tho Republican District Convention to-day had a full representation from each county, and considering that only a uicrabar of the Stale Central Committee was to bo chosen the attendance was quite largo. The convention mot at the Court Houso and was called to order by John II. Burford, the present Chairman, at 10 o'clock, who briefly stated the objects, liou. James T. Johnson, of Parke, was on motion, made Chairman. Ou taking tho chair Mr. Johnson wade a brief speech and touched upon some of tho issues that would bo presented during the approaching campaign. E. W. Nye, editor of the Attica Ledger, was made Secretary, and the Republican editors of the District, Assistant Secretaries.

J. D. Early, of Vigo, otl'ered the following resolutions which wore unanimously and entlinMastkally adopted:

The R-.ipubli?niis of tho Eighth Congressional Distiict in cou\eution a:•somliled pledge their iiuyieldiug support to the principles of tho Ropublicau parly.

We heartily endors Benjamin Harrison, President of tho United States, tor his wise admiui.-tratiou of the utl'airs of government for 1ns linn support of the principle of protection for lus vigorous fore'gn policy as displayed in the happy settlement of tho Samoan dilliculty in strong contrast with the pusillanimous course of the lute Democratic administration.

While C!rover Cleveland in his recent interview insists that there "is no danger as to the destiny of a (Democratic) p.irty which absorbs the best brains, intelligence and honesty of ttie count.!y," the Republicans of the Eighth District ili-ist, that so long as ttie Democratic puty's repiesenti.toii in Congress is secured by the suppression of the vote in tho South, his claim is an insult to tho "best brains, intelligence and honesty of tho country." 'i'he counties were then'called and the following named gentlemen were placed iu nomination for District Committeeman: I. S. Cally, of Sullivan David Strouso, of Parke Ed Pugh, of Vigo and W. T. Brush, of Montgomery.

Ou the lirst ballot, Brush received S8, Strou.se 33, Cally 21, Pugh 82. No selection.

The second ballot resulted as follons Strouso 28, Brush 102, Piigli 100. No choice.

The third illot resulted in the choice of Mr. Brush, that tientleman receiving 117 volvs and Mr. Pugh 113.

Mr. Brush was called outand respond ed by saying tints he was not a keynoter but ho took it tint this :ositiou to which ho had been chosen, meant work. That ho was willing to do and appealed to the Republicans of the District to assist iu the task before him. It was u. practical little speeeli and evinced the fact that he realized the importance of the work in hand.

F. M. Dice then offered tho following resolution which was adopted by arising vote:

Rhsolvrd: That ti.o grateful thanks of the Republicans of this Congressional District are duo aud are hereby tendered to tho retiring member of tho State Central Comiuitteo, John. H. Burford, as slight lecognitiou of their appreciation of his intelligent, zealous, and successful management iu one of tho hardest political contests ever had iu tho State. That ho justly merits and richly deserves tho plaudit "well d.'iio good and faithful servant," and so ought to bo held in such remembrance by every Republican iu the district.

F. M. Dice made a motion that tho sjuso of this convention is that tho Con gressional convention when it is held should bo hold at Brazil andxccommend to tho District Committee tho propriety of holding tho convention at that place. Tho motion was unanimously adopted.

Tho convention then ndjourin d.
