Farmers' Institutes -Methods of Panning In That Part of the State. To tlio Kdltor Jounml.
MADISON, Intl., Jan. 15, 1890.—The Farmers' Institutes Going held in southern Indiana art) well attondo.1. In some respects there iB a marked contrast between farming in the oroken river countries of southern Indiana and that ol the central part of tlie State. Yesterday in the disoussion of commercial fertilizers it. was stated that the hope and success of farming in the future must depend upon the use of those fertilizers. This brought out a lively discussion that completely exploded suoh a fallacy. The farmers of Switzerland and Jefferson counties have been largely engaged in raising timothy which was baled and sont down the river. In Switzerland county large hay barns were built where tho hay was stored and baled. So disastrous was this system of farming that soon from necessity they were compelled to aban don it as the soil was exhausted and would not grow timothy longer. Like tho man in the fablo "they havo killed tho goose to obtain the golden egg.'
Such fanners are compel dto usechem ical fertilizers. The experience that leads to this necessity, should be warning to the farmers. If the farmer will market the produce of the farm the hoof and in the flecce, he will obtaiu the best prioe for his hay and grain and at the same time improve his laud.
To a Montgomery county fanner it was a novel sight to see hogs loaded on a boat. The hogs were removed from the pens inside a oanvass like a fish sein and thus hurlded together driven on the boat.

revenue question to-day. Tho scliotl boards and school officials of Madison have been invited to be presont. The disoussion of this question is exciting deep interest in southern Indiana.
Mrs. Mount and myselt have attended three institutes this week in this part of the State. Next week we go to La Orange, Elkhart and Fulton, th'en back to southern Indiana. I am quite certain these meetings will result in good to the farmers of our State. Improved methods and progressive thought is brought to the front.
Mrs. Mount read two papers before the meeting yesterday. Mrs. Meredith reads a paper to day. The presence ol lady speakers insuros the attendance of ladies. The discussion of questions pertaining to the home promises to greatly benefit the farmer's home.

The Water Works in the Federal Oourt. The question ruled on by Judge Woods of the Federal Court, in the Water Works matter, was not in tlio or.: of Clow et al vs. John S. Brown et al, but in the suit of tho bondholders to foreclose their mortgage. Clow & Sons were made defendants to this suit and appeared in Judge Woods' Court and filed a demurrer to the complaint on the alleged ground that the Water Works Company had no authority to execute a mortgage on its plant. Judge Woode, for the present, overruled the demurrer
and entered a rule against Clow & Sous to file an answer within fifteen days
which they will do, setting up other foots in their favor in odditiou to those stated in the oomplaint, and then Judge Woods will make a final ruling in the case. He expressed doubt whether there was any statutory power in the Company to execute the mortgage, but said bo would make a final ruling when the ocswer is on file.
Officers of Farmers'Oonnoil. The officers of the Montgomery County Farmers' Council will meet next Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at tl office of Kennedy & Kennedy to arrange a programme for the February meeting.

JOUUNAL, to say a few words. It is not often I ask such favors, but for some time past considerable space lias been given in some newspapers for my especial benelit without asking for it. Now I only wish to say to my many fiiends and patrons that life is too short, friendship too precious and time too valuable to be trilled away in petty quarrels and childish feuds. A mun that lias the welfare und support of a family of sixteen to lcok after and provide for as I have, cannot afford to trifle his time, money and talents away in lawsuits that can benelit no one, and can result in the end in no benefit or profit to any, except the costs that would in the end bo paid to the court officers and perhaps a good round foe to be paid out of the couuty treasury to
Messrs. Wright & Anderson for nothing that can possibly benefit tho tax payers in any sense. 1 have been doing business in Montgomery county since 1875, and have done business for about as many men as any attorney that ever practiced in tho county, as tho court records will show, and I can well afford to leave it to my patrons to say how I have transacted business and how successful I havo been, and how hard worked. With perhaps two or three exceptions ull the men I havo done business for in fourteou years of law practice are yet my friends and patron and I feel that I can safely let them tell their own story as to wlini I have done,
My customers have been among tho best business men in the county, and if I had been doing such crocked business it is likely some of them would have discovered it and withdrew their patronage, but it seems it has been left to a few lawyers who have never made success at mauaging thoir own affairs, to make the discovery that. I have not properly managed my for my clients. As a ruie, however, a man that manages his Oivn business badly, is not likely to manage any other person's business any better than his own. No one understands this rule any bettor than business inon. Hence it is that you see some lawyers who have no practice, and some others very little. Whe- you liud a lawyer that manages his own affairs successfully, that is the lawyer who is likely to be trusted, with tho best paying business of business men, but when it iB known that a lawyer is in the ibit of squandering his own time and money in gambling and drunken debauches, it is not likely they will be trusted with muoh valuable business and as a rule such men envy the successful man. Every man is entitled to the reward of his labor aud diligeno and although others may envy him and be eager to rob him of it, yet it is very hard to do, as businese men can see and judge for themselves, and hence true merit is seldom overlooked.
I am truly thankful to my many friends for the pntronage they havo given mo and hope they may net fare any worse in the hands of any other la^per. I am thankful that I have a good position from olients who have investigated to their own satisfaction aud I neither have tho time nor inclination to waste my valuable time in matters that can result in no good to anyone,
caQ
only at best satisfy the class of
men who have ng^ made a success in heir own business, I havo not even the time, even if I had the inclination, to harbor malice against anyone, and would like the good will of all good men and would not scorn the good will of even the most humble, and I go to my new work leaving all unplesaut feelings buried in oblivion. With charity for all and malice toward none, I am yours truly, G. W. PADI,.

Beware of Ointments for Catarrh Tliat Contain Mercury. Mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system, when entering It through tho mucus surfaces.
