B£ET SUGAR.
THE CHAwyouD.svir.i.i-: .TOCHNAI. most heartily seeouds tlio motion of the Indianapolis Ji urual for a series of experiments throughout tho State in regard to the waking of boet sugar. Thero is every reason to boliovo that among our many varieties of soils wo o»n And some that will produce sugar from tho beet, 'llio ilritt material with which tho greater purt of our State is oovored is made up of almost every kind of soil known in the world, and by an extensive system of experiment", we feel eonlideut that soil adapted to the production of beet sugar would be found, A\ understand that tho Montgomery County Farmers' Council will probably take this mutter in hand at its next meeting iu February and seloot a number of men to experiment with the sugar beet. Jioth tho Secretary of Agriculture and Hon. E. V. Urookshire, our Congressman, have signified their willingness to funish seed for experiments. Tho seed will bo sont to P. S. Kennedy, corresponding secretary of tho Farmers' Council, from whom they may bo obtained bjfore planting time, If it should turn out after experiments that any considerable area of our county is adapted to the boet sugar industry factory would bo sure to be located here, which would be of incalculable benelit to both tho town people and tho farmers throughout the county. Thero is no doubt that tho boot sugar interest is going to have a bo"m in tho United .States very soon and Crawfordsville and Montgomery county should not remain asleep while it is taking its start. "Thero is a tido in tho affairs of men which, taken at its llood, leads on to fortune,"
HON. P. S. KENNEDY has an article in the Indianapolis Journal of to-day in which ho replies to Mr. Carlisle's free trade article in the Forum for January, It only requires a half column for Mr, Kennedy to completely annihilate Mr. Carlisle's ontiro mugagine paper of several pages.

WASHINGTON*, Jan. 10.—Tho Senate took up Senator Morgan'* (Ala.) resolution recognizing tho Unltod St^fos of Brazil as a tree, independent and sovereign stato, nnd Senator Turpie (Ind.) Bpoko in support ot it. At tho conclusion of his remarks tho Senato went into executive session, and afterward adjourned. The following are tho principal points m&do by Senator Turpie:
He favored the immediate recognition of the republic of Brazil, and was qulto willing that Congress should declarc to-day, as apart of the international eomrnou law of tho throoAmorioas, that no European power shall interfere in any part of this hemiaphero to restoro the representative of monarchy or empire or to prevent the establishment of a republic, but that any auch Interference would bo regarded as an act unfriendly to tho United State*, and would be resisted by all the means necessary to effect its frustration. He read extracts from tho messago of Presidt ut Harrison announcing the change of government in Brazil, nnd spokeol the message as a listless, lauguid resignation to the oourse of affairs there,
AS to the President's suggestion of awaitlsg the popular absent to the change of government in Brazil Senator Turpie said that revolution was not tho first step, but the last step, taken when a peoplo determined to abrogate the old form of govern* ment ami to adopt a now ono. Thero was always popular assent before a revolution became flagrant aud successful. The sugges* tion of the message was itself destructive and suicidal of a revolutionary government. No revolutionary government had over submitted the question of Its authority to any arbitrament save only that of the swerrd.
The republic of Brazil was entitled t5 recognition. approval and admiration at the hands of the United States, to the approval and admiration of all those in every cllmc, under every sky, who were lovers of freedom nnd humanity. Tho Provident of the United States had been long known os a Republican, using tho word In the larger and better souse, but ho (Senator Turpie) feared that in this Instance tho President waw a very much belated Republican, lagging far behiug the march of time and events. There was a very eminent publicist at the head of the State Department, having the very highest reputation for wiHdom in counsel and for promptness and decision in notion, but iu the case of Brazil even he (Mr. Blaiue) seemed to limp and linger in the rear of opportunity.
He contrasted the delay In tho recognition of the republic of Brazil with tho promptness in the recognition of tho republic of Franoe in 1870 by Mr. Washburno under tho Instruction of President Grant. That prompt recognition, within three days, and while France still had a do Jure government, was worthy of tho groat son and soldier of liberty who directed it. How long, he askod, would it bo before the Uuited States extended to the latest-born daughter of liberty words of welcome and encouragement.
