Death of Enoch B, Mote.
Enoch B. Mote died with paralysis at his home ono milo and a half west of Darlington, Deo. 30, 1889, and was buried at tho Odd Fellcws cemetery Jan. 1. Ho was born in Butler county, Ohio, March 11,1811. When he was six months old the family removod from Ohio and settled in Vigo county, six miles south of Torro Haute. When he was 6 years of age his father died leaving him to tho tender care of his mother and eldest brother. In a few years they romoved from Vigo to this county, just north of Smartsburg on what is yet known as tho old Billy Mote farm. September 11, 1833, ho was married to Mary L. Jones, who still survives him. Tho two have lived together over CO yoars. Had ho lived until tho 11th of March ho would have beon 70 years old. Mr. Mote was not a member of any denomination, but was a true believer in the Bible. As has been remarked since his death ho was nover heard to call a single sentence of the Bible into question. Previous to his death ho had given his aged wife instructions regarding his burial. Ho told her ho wishod to bo buried in a coffin and not a casket, and in tho very pliuuest possiblo manner. In conversation with Mr. French, a neighbor who called in to seo him on Christmas day, he told him ho was going to die soon, and spoke of the importance of being ready for the gro it change.

ROAD REPAIRING.
Some
Suggestions Succinctly Stated.
To the Kilttor Journal: Tho cost of keeping our throe hundred miles of gravol roads in ropair, is beginning to assume proportions that many will consider burdonsonio, and tho Commissioners will soon bo urged, by tho publio clamor to adopt some plan more efficient and less expensive for goneral road repairing. The pros I out method is a failure, both as rospeets tho condition of tho roads and tho cost of repairs. As au illustration of what I mean I will statu the result of a littlo observation. A good gravel road, I am in the habit of traveling frequently, had a small depression, near the middle of tho track, when tlio winter rains began. It could have been tilled up with a cubio foot of gravel when* I iirst observed it, at a cost perhaps of not more than live or six cents. But it was neglected—the water stood in it—the horses trod in it—tho wheels ran in it, and in ono nr.onth of rainy weather, teams had to sidle around it, and thus crowd the dirt into tho side ditches, until by and by the road, at that particular point be. came impassible and not till thou did any ono think of having it repaired.
And when repaired, it took just live loads of gravel, at a eost of 10 cents per load, to level up tho depression and make tho road as good as it was when the defect first mado its appearance. Now hero was spent the sum of two dol lore to accomplish just what could have beendono for ten cents at the most, under a ratioual system of repairing. I have no doubt at all, that a system of repairing that would require every defoot in tho road to be looked aftor on its first appearance, would reduce our road taxes to one fifth what they now are, and wo would besides, havo the benefit of better roads than we get under the present wasteful, slip-slop method. Let tho Commissioners try it and see the rosult. Take five miles of road somewhere and let out the repairing thereof, for one year, to the lowest bidder, specifying iu tho contract, that tho road is to be kept, all tho time leveled up so as to shed the water, aud maintain a smooth, even surface, and wo venture iu time tlioro will bo plenty of persons living along tho roads to take the repairing at much" less tiiau is now paid. A contractor would bo quick iu adopting the dootrino that a dollar speut in timo would save nine. Whereas, when work is paid for by tho job, tho longer the delay tho bigger tho job bo comes the motto. ECONOMIST
