'SHADES OF DEATH."

A TRUE STORY,

JIY'J. r. ncssEtii.

[CONCI.UDF.il.]

But we must bring to a close these desultory remarks on -region so long shrouded by suporstit'on, and made memorable by bloodshed, and view it in the light of an enlightened progress aud a beneficent civilization.

To do so it may bo well to state the Pine Hills is the especial theater for the contemplative and the studious, where recreation aud retirement are so happily blended during tho dog days of summer.

For along time this place was re gorded with superstitulious dread, aud a tradition obtained that the Devil in the long long ago had been buried here, and that naught of him was left except the backbono which was petrified into solid gray and white limestone: and that his ghost did for ages past loiter in the vale of Clifty's waters, aud more particularly in the neighborhood of the great rock. Without vouching for, or denying tho truth of tlieso statements, it is certain that this place is now regarded as the special haunt of the muses, and that literary persons are wont to linger here for contemplation when tho accomplishment of great literary feats is much desired, which is indeed much favored by the enchanted solituto that prevails here during the fiowery season of the year. Here the students of Wabash College are prone to assemble during vacations, and and odd times of leisure.

The college is located in the elite little city of Crawfordsvirfo (our county seat) which is only a few miles above the Shades, and which has long been known as the "Hoosier Athens." It is a oentre of authorship and literary attainment, and it must be conceded that our gifted authors here have imbibed much of thair inspiration from their proximity and familiarity with this grand rendezous.

Here the songs of "Early Vanities' and the facinating story of "Snatched From the Poor Housev had their inception. The author was born and brought up in an adjacent neighborhood to that of Milton Wineland, and was familiar with the Bock river hills, amid which the soences of many of his themes were laid, and happily amplified in verse.

Here, too, is the home of the gifted Maurice Thompson, so well known in literary circles as au author whose facile pen doubtless has received much of its promptings from his contiguity to tho Shades.

Nor should we omit to mention our renowned Gen. Lew Wallace and his far-famed production, "Ben Hur," iu which tho pen of tho author gives so much of profit and pleasure by its point and piquancy. As a denizen on tho banks of tho Book River, the General no doubt has drank in much of the inspiration of the Pino Hills region, which has added lustre and facination to his writings.

Tho list of literary worthies in tho vicinity of the Shades could be indefinitely extended, but a limitation must bo observed.

As tho Pino Hills region has frequently boon alluded to in a general way in tho course of this narrative, perhaps a more particular account of some of its distinctive features is demanded in order to get a correct understanding of its influenoo and popularity. This region is divided by the Clifty, a small stream that lias its source from the farm lands south its ingress into tho the hills is within a few rods of tho sunken earth that still marks the grave of the murdered drunkard. Its course is due north, passing close by tho west

ern end of tho wondrous Bock, aud onward uutil it is joined by the Indian Creek, about ouo-fourtli of a milo south of the river.

Tho only approaches to the valo included between the liills of tho Clifty and Indian Greeks, are by tho courses of these two streams, and by small craft on the river t® tho mouth of the Indian. Tho great Book, wliioli is the chiuf attraction hero rests on the plauo little above tho confluence of the two streams named, and is much widened here, as if especially prepared for the resting place of this notablo rock.

This great attraction stretches out from a spur of a southeastern lidge iu a slightly diagonal line toward tho Clifty, till Hearing tho stream its projecting eud is squarely presented, as if cut and fashioned by a special design. This great ridge of solid limestone is in oue continuous line, about one hundred yards iu length, and looms lip to the heiglith of eighty feet its orowniug road bed is level with a width of from four to eight feet, with abase of only fifteen to twenty feet. It is stud that a few during oues have walked on the crest of this great ridge of granite from eud to end yet it may well be doubted if tho number will over exceed one in a thousand who will bo actuated by a temerity so startling.

Grand indeed is this wondrous rock, but its ijesty is greatly enhanced by the habiliments of its surrounding,

Seen iu tho autumal season of the year when the elements are at peace, when all the varieties of tints are being bathed iu the mellowness of a declining sun, when the hillsides are deokod all around, and up, up to tho very crests of the topmost heights of the hill-tops iu intermingled interlacings of lights and shadows, forming as it does the grand and gorgeous periphery of magnificent amphitheater, how superlative is its grandeur. And tha great rock itself, the center and pedestal of this grand observatory, with the clear waters of the Clifty ever laving tho brinks of the stream near its base, it is truly a scene rarely equaled.

No wonder then that tho poets are prouo to linger here, to catch tho lucid inspirations that seem to be swelling up from this grand fount of nature's lab oratory, whero tho hand of man has not yot dared to mar the drapery of this gorgeous retrea

However mythical it may seem to some, when wo speak of tho muses it should be understood that this is a term that represents a reality though atten uated and sublimated into the spiritual so as ouly to bo spiritually discerned.
