NEW YOKK,
.Ian. 0.—Nobody need
havo any fear that England is buying up all Amorica or is putting a big mortgage on tho country. Gonuino investments of foreign capital which aro intrinsically enormous havo boon made in this country during tho past eighteen months, hut in comparison with the businoss of the Nation tho total amount represented is almost insignificant. Tho sum of English capital placed In tho United Statos within that period may roach S200,000.000, which represonts a maximum earning power of S30,000,000 annually—a big sum, but small oompared with tho Income of ovon a single big town in this country. Tho first big venturo of English capital among Amorican industries was in tho summer of 1888 when the Now York Brower^ Company WBB formed for tho purehaso of several breweries In New York and Now Jersey. Messrs. Samuel and Isaac Untermeyer negotiated the sale, and the enterprise was capitalized at S4 ,500,000. The project was spread before the London public and there was an astonishing rush for tho securities. The public subscriptions amounted to $SS, 000,000, noarly olght times tho amount offered, and tho shares wore distributed pro rata among tho subscribers. Tho suocess of tho first venturo led to tho organization of tho same projectors of tho United Statos Browing Company, capital, $5,500,000, which purchased breweries in New York, Newark and Albany. All tho stock was taken in a day or two. From this point tho business grow with amazing rapidity. The Messrs. Untermeyer have acted as American agents for tho placing of more than S32,000,000 of English capital in this country, and they now havo deals on han. Approaching consummation amounting to many million more.

Total 1205,508,000 Samuol Untermeyer, in explaining the workings of the great system which has sprung up in London for the purpose of securing American investments, eaid that the money had come from •mall investors and not from capltallst& Regarding tho prospect of a further influx of English capital Mr. Untermeyer said: "Within the past four wocks there has been renewed activity in the investment In Amcrloan Industrial enterprises, and there Is overy reason to believe that the new year will see a tor greater amount of capital introduced Into this country from abroad than was brought here In 1838. I believe this great Influx ol foreign capital will greatly assist the development of our Industries. The United States 1b not a rich country, ft la too young to have become rich, and l» Is so vast that It can properly employ all the capital that can bo divorted to It. The small amount of profit that goes to England from Industrial enterprises In the sliapo of dividends upon the business is trilling compared with the amount of moneyi that the Englishmen must •p6nd here, especially in the employment of labor to earn that dividend. Tho man who baa a business hero and sells to an English oompany employs his eapltal in a new dlrootlon and creates a new demand for labor, while the English companies which DUOcoed to the business must continue to employ the labor before engaged so_tho fact that the net earnings go to England Is not, In my ]udgmoot, an offset to tho grand bcneilts acquired by ui from the use of that capituL "Within the past four months companiee have been formed in London for the purpose ol Investing In Industrial jj»orprlses In America with an aggregute capl^ of not less than 1100,000,000. The lust company of that kind rooently formed is a corporation known as the Law Debenture Corporation for the purpose ol acquiring mortgages on Industrial enterprises. It has a capital ot fI.1000,000. The trnsteos for the debenture-holders are such men as tho present Attornoy-Oencral -ol England, Sir Richard E. Webster, Sir Charles Russell and the Law Guarantee and Trust Society, while tho board of directors embraces membors from all of the leading law firms In London. This Is only one of a scries of companies that have boon formed to further the Investment In American enterprises. One point thut especially tempts English capital to this country Is tho fact that we are free from all wurllko complications."
