POETICAL. MUCH YET KEMAIXS UNSUNG. Coupr-r WATCH! feVJOHtf MASON' GOOD, W. D Life is a sea how f.iirits f.tce, How smooth its dimpling waters pace, Its canopy how pure! But below-, and tempests sleep, Insrduo'o'er the glassy deep, Nor leave an hour secure. Life is a wilderness best Withtangling thorns, tlreach'rousnct And prowl'd by beasts of prey. One path alone conducts aright, One narrow path, with little light; A thousand lead astay. LiTe is a warfare and alike Prepared to parley or to strike, The practised foe draws nigh. Oh, hold no truce, less dangeruos far To stand, and all his phalanx dare, Than trcst his specious lie. Whatc'er its form, whateVr its flow, While life is lent to man below, Our duty stands confest To watch incessant, firm of mind. And watch where'er the post assigned. And leave to God the rest; While they watch'd, the sheperds swains Heard angels strike to anle-strains The song of heavenly love; Blest harmony that far excels All music elt on earth that dwells, Or e"er wa tun'd above. Twas while they watch'd, the sages tracM The shir that every starefTac'd With new and nobler shine: They follow'd and it led the way, To where the infant Saviour lay, And gave them light divine. While they watch'd with lamp in hand, And oil well stor'd, the vrgin band The bridal pomp descried; They joined it and the heavenly gate. That opd to them its glorious state, Was closed on all beside. Watch! watch & pray ! in suffering hour, Thus he exclaim'd, who felt its power, And triumph'd in the strife.
