person being fiv'd upon by the party generally. This however, appears at present, next to impossible. Various citizens of thatStatehave been named, by their respective friends, and they seem to be urged with a degree of feeling, and adherred to with a tenacity which renders it improbable that they will be willing to yield to any considerations of expediency or propriety. Under such circumstance it is didicult to say what course may te best; aud shold the various sections of the party m that Stile persist in their vehement and deiermi:ied preference?, it may become a question whether it may not be dxpedient proper to select r.i individual from some other State. Should that course be adopted, we tb.iuli that from the manner in which Colonel Richard M. Johnsou h.s been spoken of in
various Darts of the country, he would be
most likely to be generally preferred. His claims have been favorably noticed in New
York, New Jersey, l'enny vania, Ohio and

Shipwreck. On Friday last, the steam boat Ohio, on her passage up the Lake, discovered the hull of a vessel on her beam ends five miles from shore opposite Presque Isle. On nearing her she was found to be dismasted aud filled with water. Her small boat was seen at a short distance also filled with water. Her stern was nearly covered with water, but the word '"Conneaut,, was visible, which lei to the supposition that she was the " Marshall of Conneaut.-- a new vessel, as we understand, that had recently been at this port and supplied with shipping papers. Her situation rendered it certain that all on board had perished.
New.Orleans, Sept. 17. The $37.00 which had i been stolen on board of the steamer Kentuckian, were found
the day before yesterday behind the burying

knowledg'd himself to be the principal author
of the theft; though it would seem that he
had accomplices, whose names he was uuwilling to divulge.

NOT A LOVER NOW.
The. Portland Adverttser of the 27th inst. contains the following: Difficulties on the Iadawasca. Reports are in town that difficulties have occurred on the Madayvasca be
tween the British soldiers and the United States citizens. The latter it is said, undertook, on the strength of a deed, to take possession of the lands which were in possession of the British citizens, whereupou a quarrel ensued, which terminated in the death of seven British soldiers and four United States citizens. We give this report as circulated from sources tolerably authentic; butit is well not to give it too much credence before it is confirmed from the quarter itself. The following appears in the British, (N. B.) Colonist: "Madawasea. This land of Ire, (rumor says) is again in turmoil. Report says that our Yankee neighbors have taken the liberty of appointing officers,
&c. &c on the British side, and that his excellency has taken prompt measures to point out the mistake. Lef them beware lest his excellency should make a point of pointing it out at the point of the bayonet. His Excellency is an old hand at taming wild men of the forest." The Eastport papers notice the report above mentioned and add: 'We know not from what source the above rumour has gained currency, nor the grounds on which it is founded. We must await the particulars."
