Next Frklav is "Iiinl and Arbor Day" in the public schools of the stale. Frank L. Jones, state superintendent of public instruction, says the indication;; are that the day will be more generally observed this year than ever before in Indiana. He has received numerous inquiries from superintendents and principals of schools, asking him for programs which suggest exercises for the day. The feature of the day is the planting of trees, which are generally named in honor of wellknown authors, military heroes, or of local citizens. A number of trees have been named in honor of James Whitcomb Riley, others in honor of William Watson Woollen, of Indianapolis, who is known for his interest in birds, and others in honor of the superintendent of public instruction. It is expected that this year many trees will be named in honor of heroes of the Spanish American and Filipino .wars.
Bird and Arbor Day" is of
ficially recognized by the governor, who, each year, issues a proclamation announcing the day on which the observance is to be held. The first suggestion of the day is accredited to B. G. Northrop, of the Connecticut Board of Education, who made the suggestion in his report in 1805. The setting apart of an annual day for the same purpose under state authority originated with J. Sterling Morton, secretary of agriculture, who induced the governor of Nebraska to issue a proclamation appointing a day for the planting of trees throughout the state. In Indiana the first Arbor day was in April, 1884, but it was not generally observed unlil October
30, 1896. Since (hat time it has been observed annually on the last Friday in October. In the pamphlet recently issued by the state superintendent of public instruction, a program is suggested to teachers who desire to observe the day with appropriate exercises. Mr. Jones suggests that the exercises consist of an opening song, an address by the teacher or a patron, the reading of the governor's proclamation, the reading of the state superintendent's letter, and of recitations, readings and songs of appropriate significance.
