fiUDICTOBY.
It was thirty-tivo years ago tut May thai the undersigned " purchased and took possession of ' the Bepublkan Progress office, Bd without itotermissien tho paper haa been printed by bioa up to and including last weak. Not many persona remain in business so long and very few care to. Business grow monotonous in that time; and as a rale it becomes unprofitable for one man or set of men to follow in the earner rut so long. There are exceptions, however, and the printing business is on of them, as a man becomes wedded to it in time. - Our experience, while full of hard work and constant care, has been a pleasant one, and our contact with tho people of Monroe county .has been full of pleasant experiences. We now step down and aoat to make way for a younger.
more active and aggressive and . wn trust a better man in every
: wv for the nlace than aurself .
Sir. Dennis B. Haungs, our successor, wo believe to be better Sited for the times than myself bti is younger, has modern notions 4ft business and will not hesitate to pat them in practice. We earnestly bespeak for him the patronage of all business men, and trust that be will be shown the consideration and given tho hearty patronage be deserves. Atkins everything for our suc
cessor and reserving nothing for ourceif, wo subscribe ourself the public's servant, Wm. A. Gabe.
Mr. u. ka.hv bland, private citizen, haa been offered the chair
of Politics at Princeton University. If he occents he will prebsbly instruct his classes how to fill offices with Democrats and
tiiea make civil service laws to keep them there. The churchman who 'longed for an hour of Dewey" with his guns before Constantinople, so that missionaries might have a chance with the Turks, has a good field down in Kentucky. There missionaries might do some good with the Bakers, Howards and Whites.
Whin an office is removed from the civil service list that should never have been plaeed there the Democrats call it ' 'taking the rivets
out of the armor which eneasea civil service reform." And yet the latest Democratic national
platform contains a plank pro
posing to dynamite the whole
thing.

Joe Leiter, the ex-Chicago wheat plunger, was the hero of a big fire scare at the big Brighton Beach hotel, at Coney island. The
fire did little damage, but Leiter threw hand grenades at the fire
and f 5 bills right and left to men
who aided in extinguishing the flames. Tire hotel is an immense
affair, not far from the water's
edge, and was recently furnished by the Brooklyn Heights railroad
company, si a cost ot Bbuu.oou.
The guests who were in their rooms had trouble in getting out
of tue building. Some .'of them tied wet towels around their head
and groped their way down the

plain and the insincerity of these who traded on his influence so palpable that among those who have been put to the most trouble

Aftbb the scientists of Europe
have struggled for years with tho problem elf divine interference in the affairs of men, it remains for
the devout clergymen of Eau
Claire, Wis., to settle the question for good and aye by declar
ing' that the New Richmond cy
clone was a dispensation of Provi
dence. One rabid episcopalian
brother thought that the God of the Christians ought not to be held accountable, but that the storm was the work of some un
known devil. We are being treat
ed to an example of the influences wBich govern the manufacture of theology. But probably the dispensation of Providenee idea would have been more plausible even to the Eau Claire brethren if tbe cyclone had swept down on some part of New York or Chicago, rather than a quiet Wisconsin village.

At this juncture a man who wore a blue serge suit and a straw bat, and who was recognized to be Joseph Leiter, climbed up on the roof of the pantry and began shouting to attract tho attention of the fire-fighters. Both hands were full of money and he waved them in tbe air. "Five dollars to every man who pulls a burning plank out of this building," he shouted." "That's the only way to put this fire out Tear her down." The crowd made a rush, and within a few moments there was nothing left of the kitchen. The demolition was accomplished so quickly that the man who proposed it had trouble to get off the roof in time. He was as good as his word, and paid f S to every man who brought him a burning piece of wood. Tho loss by wator to the rich furnishings of the hotel was (2,500. Tbe fire loss wns lesB. It is said, however, that the great electric light plant, which cost 825,000 was seriously damaged.

The situation in tho Philippines is still very serious. Late dispatches announce that General Joe W heeler has been ordered there and Gen. Miles will most likely start for Manila shortly. By virtue of his higher rank he will be in command of the American forces on his arrival there and it is to be hoped he will soon be able to put down Mr. Aguinaldo and his cohorts. Here's tho last resting place of
tho man who blew inte an empty gun; there the woman who lighted the fire with kerosene; a grass carpeted mound covers the grave of tbe man who took the mule by the tail. The monument to the boy who didn't know the gun was loaded is greatly overshadowed by that of the man who jumped from the train to save a ten mile walk. If a man takes a sack of wheat and an ordinary checker board and sitfi down, just for want of something to do, and undertakes to put i. grain of wheal on the first square, two graius on the second, four on the third, etc., how roanj' grains would be used before all the sixty-four squat es were filled! It does not seem possible, but a mathematician has figured it out at 9,523,571,603 bushels, allowing one million grains to the bushel, or as much wheat as the United States would produce in 18,416 years. If you tbiuk the statement is untrue, just take your pencil aud make a few figures.

At Corydon he found a case of bleeding smallpox which is causing great concern, as 60 per sent, of such cases are fatal. At fiockport twonty cases were found, and the houseboat which has been used as a peiit-house was buraod and the pest-house was established in a tent on the bank of tbe river. A colored man died before the ernptionn aymeared, and Dr. Hurty regarded this as a bad ein for the future. A general vaccination and quarantine was ordered.
