The U. S. SenatorsMp. The struggle for the U. S. Senatersbip begins this week in earnest, at the capital city, and the strength of each candidate will be pretty well developed before the weak eloses. There are several candidates, but the only one it seems to the Progress who has developed true strength is Albert J. Beveridge of Indianapolis. Mr. Bereridse has not descended to ward politics to further his interests, but bf his manly, dignified conduct, has wtm the respect and admiration of many who at first were not favorably impressed with his candidacy. The interests of Indiana would be safe in the hands f Mr. Bcvoridge as Senator, and be would insure a respect and confidence that some of the can didatcs (if we may judge from their petty quarrels) could not possibly command. On View of It. President McKinley did a grace

ful thing when he said at Atlanta

that the time bad come tor the na tion to- join in caring for the Con

The story is told of an apprentice drug clerk in Bedford

at-fae had some trouble witn tne

abbreviations at first, although he

has passed that difficulty now and dispenses drugs with the accuracy ol a veteran. One day in his early experience a customer called for "potash." He walked slowly down tbe line of bottles observing the label closely, until he eame to one reading "Potas. Nit." The bottle was half full, bnt the inscription was plain. He read aloud, "Potash ! nit, we haven't any. Street language is not to be confused- wth technical names.

Tuck your handkerchief up your sleeve is the r.ev social order. It is not altogether a new dispensation, after all. Some years ago it came into vogue, and was quite widely adopted, later falling into disrepute. Men said it became altogether too common, and, like all fashions that get this name, it fell to the ground. Now it comes up again, under belter auspices than ever. The real origin of this fashion it is inter esting to trace. It was started by tbe English guardsmen, who, when arrayed in dress uniform, have such perfectly fitting garments that a bulge would spoil the line of beauty. Inside the cuff was the only place for the handkerchief to go, and so it went there.
