IXSTKUCTIOXS. If you want to vote the Straight Kepoblican Ticket, make a cross thus, X, within the large circle containing the Eagle at the top f the ticket. If you mark in the Large Circle yon must not make a mark anywhere else on the ballot or you will loae your Tab.
If you want to Tote a mixed-j
ticket, you mnst not mark wit bin the large circle, but must make a os thus, X, in the Small Square opposite the name of each peraon for whom you desire to rote. Tou must not mark on the ballot with anything but the blus risen, given yea by the poll clerk. If you by mistake mutilate your ballot return it to the poll clerk and get a new ballot. . Toa must fold your ballot before coming oat of the booth so that the face will not show, and wo that the initials of the poll clerks on the back will show.
The thm-Mus; of Ballots. The chairmen of the State committees, their attorneys and the State Board of Election Commissioners hare agreed on the following instructions as to how to mark a ballot where there are several persons to be elected to the same office: "In case there are two or more persons to be elected to the same office, as in the ease of Senators and Representatives in the legislature, judges of the Superior Court, justices of the peace, etc., if the name of one or more, or less than all, of such persons for a particular office are marked on
one or more of the tickets, the ballot must be counted for the
parsons whose names are so marked; but if in suoh ease the names
of. more persons than are to be elected to the particular office are
marked on any ballot, such ballot eaanet be counted for any person fsr that office, for the reason that it can not be determined which of the right number to be elected were intended to be voted for,
hot the ballot is valid and must
fee counted for the candidates for
ewer omces as to wnom it is
properly marked."
LET FACTS TALK.
Review or .Tudjro Gardiner That Speaks lor Itself.
The following from the Washington Gazette speaks for itself in reference to Judge Gardiner, the Republican candidate for Congress: "What is tbo mutter with some of you, gentlemen ! Don't you know that your mean and cowardly libel on Judge Gardiner will do him no harm ? Don't you know that if what you suy of him was true, it could not hnvo been much of a society if he wns its only member ? And that if there was an order of the Knights of the Golden Girth? in this country, every member of it was a Democrat 2 If any of them have held or have been a candidate for office as Democrats, why havo you been silent as to thorn ? Don't you know the infamous attempt to blacken Judge Gardiner's character with this charge has four times been stamped beneath the public
heel ? once by Governor Oliver
P. Morton, whose knowledge ol the membership of the organiza
tion in Indiana was second to no man, and who appointed Judge
Gardiner to the office of Prosecuting attorney ! once by Gov-
ernor Conrad Baker, who appointed Mr. Gar .liner Judge? once
by the people of Daviess county , regardless of party, giving him a majority of 275, for Judge of circuit court over Jndge Malott, when the county was overwhelmingly Democratic and went Democratic for the State ticket ? and once by the people . of Daviess county electing him to the legislature, even when a United States Senator was to be elected, by a majority of over S30 when the county went Democratic on the State ticket ? Certainly, and the slander of to-day was scattered then and the people of Daviess county. Democrats, Populists and Republicans, will not permit you to do injury to one oi their upright citizens whom they have respected and honored for a lifetime, without giving you a just rebuke. Again in November they will bury tho charge beneath an avalanche of votes. In conclusion do you want the Republican press to publish to tho voters of of this district what manner of a man your candidate is!" Make a cross X with the blue pencil when you vote. No other mark will go. If s straight ttoket asake the X insida the large circle on each ticket. If a mixed ticket do not mark in the circle at all, but make ao X inside tbe little square to the left of every candidate for whom you wish to vote. Dr. Edward Everett Hale ays of the war with Spain: "In
one hundred days God has set forward the civilization of the world one hundred years. " The growling fraternity will learn that this will be tbe verdict of mstory if they live long enough. We do not see that much capital is to be made by charging that tbe soldiers are being paid off in money different from that Oemaaded and received by the bond-holders. There was a time whan, that went, during greenback days and the suspension of specie payment. But new all government creditors receive, or can receive if they demand it, precisely tbe same kind of money. Let's not talk nonsense even for "political effect" Indianapolis Independent. . All good reasoning people could call - the coming election on-partisan so far as congressmen are concerned. They want tbe present administration sustained and political affairs will be laid aside.
There is not a Republican bat will vote to sustain the administration. This talk of revolt is all bosh. Personal grievances there may have been, but loyalty to eeontry, loyalty to the president, overrides all prejudices. TfyMBXsrrrpaxg to bave it charg- - ed to him that he is not loyal to the administration. His vote will to that way. The Republicans can win in stria election this year. Any member of the party who forgets to vote wit be considered indifferent to a splendid opportunity.
Let bo one talk you out of voting for George Thornton for Sheriff. He is one of tbe cleverest Btea who see candidates en sMybosly's ticket. He is not in
clined to jump on a peer man 1 with both feet because he is in of- j Bee, but while doing his duty is . aaasonsbly indulgent.
The grand jury has found indictments against Mrs. Evans for murder, and against Thos. J. King for forgery. A tramp was knaoked off the bridge into the river., near Gos-
port, Sunday afternoon. He was
killed instantly.
Evert Republican should make
an effort to secure, tha election of
a Sheriff and Clerk. Theso two officers are vitally necessary to the success of the party at the Presidential election, which will occur two years hence. Seo that
your ticket bears tbe names of
1 horn ton and Woodward.
Some parties at Richmond
purchased sausage from, an Ind lanapolis firm and Secretary Hur
ty of tbe State board of health
has been, notified that there has
been found in it a cat's foot, claws
and all, though no traces of fur.
Whether the fur was peeled off
before placing tabby in the grind
ers, or whether she missed her
footing and fell in fur and all, is
the question that the health of
ficers are expected to answer.
The appointments of election officers is made by tbe county commissioners. It is vitally necessary that the county commissioners should be Republicans. See that Perring and Miller are on the ticket you vote. -There is to be a street fair at Crawferdsville this week, and a special train of three coaches and a baggage car came here on Thursday to advertise it. Led by a brass band about 300 visitors paraded the streets carrying banners. They were s jolly set of good fellows and left the impression hero that those who go to Crawfordsvillo this week will bave "a hot time," both by day and by night. John P. Habbbll will make a tip-top county treasurer. He is honest, reliable, responsible and acoommodatins and will do everv-
thing in bis power in the interest
ol the taxpayers, lie sure to vote for him on the 8th of November. Oregon has elected for United States senator, the Hon. Joseph Simon of Portland, a Republican and a Hebrew. He is a
lawyer and a gentleman of ability.
Theso Men Ilfler. Judgo Gardiner has the advantage of knowing for sure what lie thinks on the public questions of to-day. Jndge Gardiner favors a protective tariff, the geld standard and nn unqualified endorsement of tho acts of the president and his subordinates in tho conduet of tho war. Judge Miors on the contrary favors fiea trade, free silver and denounces tho "outrages" of the late war. As usual-, facts, logic, common sense and all tbo data that are usually considered when men form a judgment are against hini but that makes no dilforonco to Judge Micrs. Ho lays great stress on his pension record but of course does not take the trouble to mention the fact that a Republican pension commissioner should havo tho greater credit. Should this same pension commissioner see uo merit in tho enso under adjudication, then onr congressman freely criticises the department and says to his old soldier constituent,
"You seo how it is. 1 did all in
my power for yon but was overruled." Out upon such methods!
Give honor where honor is due in each case whether it be success or failure. Mitchell Commercial.
Maj. Grimes and wife are
arranging to go to DesMoines and
other points in Iowa to mako a visit of two or three weeks. Maj. Grimes has a brother living in that State who is 85 years old and at the point of death. The judgment for $5,000,
Wray vs. tho Peerless quarry near Bedford, has boon affirmed by tbe supreme court. Inasmuch as the Peerless quarry is covered with previous judgments and mortgages it would seem that the Wray judgment will be a difficult one to collect.
Schools Slay Bo Consolidated. D. M. Geeting, State superintendent of public instruction, is gathering and compiling statistics for presentation to the coining legislature along with the suggestion that tbo country schools of the State be consolidated. Uo. ports fram 800 trustees reveal 1,788 district schools in which the average attendance is under 15; 286 in which the average attendance is under 40, and 26 schools in which the average attendance is under 5. The twenty-six schools which have an averago attendance under five, have a total of 119 pupils, who cost the State last year $6,962.62, or $58.51 for each pupil. The superintendent says the deeper he goes into the subject the more convinced he is that many of the district schools can be consolidated so as greatly to benefit the public and at the same time provide for an enormous saving to tho State.
Owing to illness W. D. ()w-! en was unable to fill his appointment last Saturday, and Hon. John Chancy was substituted. Peoplo were agreeably surprised by die effort of Mr. Chaney. His speech was logical, convincing and eloquent. His hearers seemed unwilling to lot him quit, though ho spoke several hours. Robert Higginbothain and John Brogan, bojh under 17 years of ago, were arrested at New Albany last week charged with haviug knowledge of tho robbery of Moore's store, at Mitchell. They say a mau named Woolf, (who is under arrest at Louisville) did tho stealing, and induced them to dispose of the goods. The furlough of tho 159th regiment has been extended to November 10th throe weeks from Thursday. Hon. Ira Batman addressed tho Republicans over near Meltonsvillo Saturday afternoon. There are few more pleasing talkers than Mr. Batman, and it is reported that he had a largo and eutbusiaslic hearing. It is probable that , a, fly,ing trip through tbo southern part, of tho State will bo made by Gen. Harrison, and that he will speak from the train in several towns each day, as in 1894. Blvoiniugton may ho included in the list. Frank Brodix, of New York, is visiting his mother, Mrs. iM.K. northern part of the county. The foundation of the now veneer lactory is nearly completed and the carpenters have begun work. Mrs. Rodney Smith has gone to Taylorsville, Ills., whore she will make au extended visit with her mother, Mrs. J. G. Ada ms. tSfBrown and Molino Wagons at W. J. Allen's.
