Poor Opinion of England. Indianapolis Sun. Dr. and Mrs. Wilmer F. Christian have just returned from a brief tour of England. Scotland and Ireland, and reprt that tho fiieidliness of the English for the Americans at the present time is most marked. Dr. Christian states that the English people ara very anxious for an alliance with the United States. Going and coning tho boat upon which Dr. and Mrs. Christian sailed passed Spanish transports, but as tho American line boat wa sailing under the flag of Belgium it was not molested. The Spanish boats were those recently secured from Germany to be used as transport. Dr. Christian spent some time in Ireland, and declares that the conditions existing there are disgraceful. He says that, although the country is the most prosperous appearing imaginable, yet people are starving in their little huts. These, he says, hare the thatched roof and dirt floor, and are surrounded perhaps by a very small yard. On one side may be an immense woodland, filled with deer, but the tenant dare not touch one of the animals, even though his children are starving. The rental demanded by English landlords is so enormous, Dr. Christian says, that the Irish can not pay it. Besides the heavy rent exacted for a small piece of land, the lessee must also pay the h avy taxes on the property while ho occupies it. The streets of all Irish towns are filled with English soldiers, who never miss an opportunity to beat and arrest an Irishman. The doctor says that England is 1,000 yean behind the times in everything. As police-surgeon of Indianapolis, he was particularly interested in the police and fire forces of London. The fire department, he states, consists only of heavy steam engines, 50 years back of pattern, which also carry two or three sections of hose. The only other apparatus is small hand reel of hose and so-called hook and ladder equipment. This latter is hauled to a fire on a dray, then ran off on the ground and backed np against a building. None of the apparatus is equipped with gongs and the firemen told Dr. Christian that they get the crowds out of the way by shooting. There are six men on each engine and they take turn about shouting at the populace. The sections of hose are not kept connected, as in this country, but are put together after the fire is reached. None of the buildings are over three stories high and all are of stone or brick, which is largely responsible for the few conflagrations. The police department is just as far behind the times. Most of the policemen can neither read nor write, and nono of them know enough to give any information. A silror coin will at times persuade one of the down-town officers to give a bit of information to tourists. At sevcial of the polite stations Dr. Christian attempted to gain entrance merely to inspect the places, but was always refused. He states that the keepers seemed to expect that he should bribe his way in, but he decliued. Changes have been made in the Indianapolis fair grounds that will revolutionize the exhibits. The exhibition of all of the horses and cattle will be in the broad plaza in front of the grand stand where the public can enjoy the inspection of the live stock. This will Iks a popular inovution.
tho ecntor ot tile alloc. JUie entire arrangement is simple, and the innovation moans that when a horse casts a shot' it will not bo nocessary any lougor th souk tho aid of a farrier, for the new shoe can easily bo fitted in a few minutes by an inexperienced hand. In a ruccnt trial of the nailless horse shoes the new invention was put to a severe tost the horse on which the shoes were fitted being attached to a heavy laden van and worked up and down steep gradients and on granite paved streets. . Notwithstanding this rough work tho shoes showed no signs of shifting, and were not removed until worn out. The now shoe obviates all risk of pricking or laming by nails, and a slight rasping of the hoof is all that is required in attaching it to its bed.

dif-
BonncI to Win. Frmu the Philadelphia Press. Ex-President Harrison's consent to take' part in the campaign in Indiana is an indication of the preparations the Republicans of the State are making to carry tho election. There are only congressmen and minor State officers to be chosen, but no risks will be taken and no losses invited. Tho result in Indiana will havo more than local significance. The Republican State convention adopted the most pronounced gold platform framed this year. The plank reads in part as follows: "The Republicans of Indiana aro unreservedly for sound money, and are therefore opposed to tho heresy to which the Democratic party is wedded, of the free and unlimited coinage of both gold and silver at the ratio of 16 to 1, which we regard as absolutely sure to debase our money and destroy our private and public credit and cause general business disaster." There is no doubt from this plank where the Indiana Republicans stand and there ought to be no doubt of its endorsement in November by a rousing majority. The Price ot Bicycles. From the Springrfield Republican. In years past, when the bicycle industry was in its bonanza days, the question of price was a minor one with the makers, but they are giving it a great deal of prayer this year, and what the retail price is to be next year is more than ever perplexing. The makers have made some fatal mistakes in this line in the past few years, and mistakes are luxuries that few can afford nowadays in in the bicycle business. A prominent business man .says that ho considers it probable that by far the best price tho makers of firstclass wheels can fix upon is $35. If they will mako it $50, they will be bothered by a big erop of machines for $25; while if they put it at $35 they will really be likely to do away with a large share of the trade in the $25 wheel, for the reason that riders will be willing generally to pay $10 extra to get a 'Jfirst-class article." Those who are in a position to know say that it is very likely that the price of high-grade wheels next year will bo us low as $35; but if not that there are strong indications that it will be at least under $45.

An exchange says: If people would just remember that flour would extinguish blazing gasolino tho knowledge would be inestimable. Says the man of the house: "Ono day our gasoline stove was blazing, and wet clothes were used without effect, when I remembered that I had read that flour would extinguish the blaze. Porto Rico is an island lying southeast of Cuba, is about ono hundred miles long from east to west and forty milos broad. It has a population of 800,000.
