Granny perceived that something was wrong- directly they emersrod into the lijsrht, for tho lamps were all lit in the dininsr-room. and rorealed tho bonny brow black as nirht, and the rosebud mouth unmistakably drawn down at the corners -and for the life of her the kind old lady could not think what was at the bottom ot it: but presently she observed with relief that there was an effort to throw off the cloud: and when at length, though not for awhile, in response to some morrv story fold across the table lor her especial benefit, Jerry s own bell-liko laugh rang out again, bigti and clear and sweet as a young bird's, she was so rejoiced to hoar it that she forgot to note that tho transformation was neither due to any efforts of her own nor of her grandson. To Cecil, indeed, Jerry was all shoulder. She had no eyes nor ears for him until after that laugh had brought her out of her mood: and Bellenden himself could not but have been conscious of the blazing radiance of the eyes which so continuously sought his, and of the'r ready response to every approach he made. "By Jove, she will bo a beauty one of these davs!" he told himself. "By Jove, Mastor Raymond, you had hotter be well forward in the Cold liofore more of the pack open cry! His mirth was so spontaneous and infectious that no one could resist it; and without knowing in the least why, granny and granddaughter laughed almost 'as much and as heartily as he: while Cecil, who would have felt aggrieved and discomfittea had any one else made such fun of the whole, consoled his dignity with the reflection that Bellenden had never been used to any t it the most unex ceptionable of billiard-tables, and that he must therefore bo considered as nigniy inauigent in tnai ne conue- j scended to handleacue at all upon this ! ,,,i ,rsBelvesuSedehra? lardS ! ourselves?" suggested the gay guards' man at lat. "I can play battle, I can indeed," almost shrieked the little girl in her excitement. "I have played it at Uncle Raymond's: we played it the very last time I was there: and Ktliel, and A lieu, and I all played: didn't we Cecil? Don't you remember, Cecil?" Cecil's misdemeanor was by this time forgotten. "Oh, granny, do say 'Yes,' proceeded the small sneaker, dancing in front of the smiling and indulgent granny. "Do get out of your chair, and come, there's a dear granny: and if you don't know the game, we can all teach vou," and then, as granny obediently rose, off bustled Goraldine to the stand, took down tho cues, and examined their tips the half of these were off selected a very narrow one for herself, and a very b.'oad ono for , granny, by way of granny's being the , novice, and finally rtood by Bellenden's ' Side, the picture of happiness and ' pride. ! Things brightened afresh, however, thereafter. Capt. Bellenden performed feats feats which, it is true, dH not invariably come off as they were intended, and which none but an expert would have ventured upon at all: but ho showed how he could have done this and that, and Cecil vouched for tho fact that he had actually seen the com- , plication worked, so that it was almost ! as good as boholding for themselves, j Jerry's bedtime had long gone by:! but it was not in fond granddame 's heart to put an end to her darling's pleasure. It rained, as foretold, and ho was pressed to remain, but did not do so. Personally he would gladly enough have stayed in such good quarters, and sent over the note to Kincraig wliie.h young KaFinond ni'irod him to write: but he did not feci that tho thing could bo done. That sort of freedom with a house to which ho had only been received under stress of adverse circumstances lie was not tho man to tako. and with a firmness which Mrs. Campbell in nor heart applauded, and which Oven Cocil Jolt to ho correct an J gentlemanly, ho adhered to his resolution. Would ho then return? Would he pay them a real visit? Shoot their moor? And in particular have some sea-fishing on tho bank below the house, to the description of which ho had listened with so much appreciation? The lishing was going on nightly at present. Granny spoke: but Jerry looked a thousand urgencies, and her silence was even more effectual than tho other's ploadiugs. l!el!cnden really hardly Knew now to manage it, lor nis time was already manned out for the autumn: but somehow he could not resist. In his heart ho thought he knew whom ho could throw over, and from whence ho could scrimp a few days. His doubtful brow cloared, and he gave the promiso required. They were really too kind, and tho inducements altogether were really too tempting: ho would certainly come, and would write from Kincraig. In a few days the letter came. It was all that Cecil, but perhaps not quite all that Jerry had hoped for. She, poor child, had been feverishly expectant as every post camo in, and many a boat had she watched crossing the loch, unknown to all beside. She bad (fancied ho might come at any time, and the days had seemed loni? and profitless, though hope had started afresh with each returning morn. In reality, Bellenden wrote quito wonderfully soon for him. He had a very pleasant recollection of a charming little adventure, i.nd was quite willing to follow it up and see more of his new friends: but long days on the moor are not conducive to letter-writing, ana he did not quite know what to sar or to lis. At last, however, he could make a definite pror.osal. and It was one which. bf we have said, Cecil found agreeable enough. He did not primarily offer his own return to Inchraarow, but in i tho name of his host, ho requested tno nam0 or nost' no requested 'u"I-!mon! "T1) ,1' sembled, and just one room vacant. "And Archie Kincraig will have to shoot hero,'' rejoined Mrs. Cami.bMl. well versed in moor etiquette. "Had you not better bring him ba-.'k with you also, Cecil." "I am only su"prised that he allows Bellenden to leave so soon, for ho is not- likely to have many such crack shots." He did not know that, tho especial crack shot referred to was not over and above well pleased either wi: h his moor, or his company. Bellenden had reflected that in atl probability the shooting rotsJned by tho Campbells was much better than that let to his host: that the people got together in the shooting-box were a so-so scratch lot, not to his taste; and moreover, that the cookery was tasteless, and his bedroom small and stufTy - so that tho recollection of his evening at tho old castle on the other side of the loch had grown ploasanter day by dav in contrast to his present surroundings. To shoot with Cecil Raymond, who, if ho were but a bov and priggish boy, was still a gentleman and a nice sort of fellow .whereas the follows assembled at Kincrair wore, as a rule, of another sort; to d'no with the dear old lady, who had made herself quite charming to him, and with whom ho had plenty of topli s in common, for she wts bv no means as completely out of the world he moved in, for all the reciU6e af0 6he was leading now, as were rate set of rather rowdy bachelors. Accordingly he mate his host as he well knew how to do invite young Haymond, and had addod to tho invitation his own postscript. All went well. Cecil certainly shone by conttastat the shooting lodge. Ho might not apnearto advantage when contrasted with Bellenden, and with Bollcndcn only; but he was several cuts abovo Archie Kincraig's friends, and this he could not help perceiving. Bollenden owned that the company was not to his mind Cocil turned up his nose at it ttill more. Bellenden whispered that the sport was bad Cocil" called it abominable. Bellenden suggested that they should bo off on the day but ono following-Cecil dispatched a mossenger to stop tho early boat, in order that they might start the first thing alter breakran. When the two arrived at Inchmarew they had advanced in intimacy by seven-league strides. On this occasion Jorrv was not nearly so demonstrative as she had been boforo. She had had timo to think, and to bo shy of her own thoughts. She, too, had been growing fast within the up 1 the door, and had a pretty bunch : of ilowors at her throat: and as she : eomo gomowhuVMiberly forward to do i her part of welcome, ecil t hought lie had never beheld his joung cousin lo greater ad vuutage. i Perhaps Bellenden was not quite of i the same opinion. Perhaps h would
hovo preferred a stop and carriage lees sedate, a countenance loss composed. Certain it in that ho oxnarkmced a momentary chock, a feeling oi surprise iind doubt, mid Unit his own manner shadowed this forth on the instant. But presently ho saw through it only too well. It was but a passing woman-
' liness, an evanescent emotion; of tho i bashful kind, und it soon, too soon, gavo j way. Ere half an hour hud elapsed, ' tho two were chattering ami bandying i jest and repartee as freely together as ! they ha;l t'vt:rdonc, and ho was no more on his guard. At dinner-time, or rather at dress- ; ing-timo, ho found flowers in his i room. ! When the young man had formed ! his ideas on any given subject, it ro- ' quired an agency littlo short of supcrnatural to uproot them, ami his calm ! conviction of Ceraldino's extreme I vouth and devotion to himself carried him through all ovidcuco of a contrary nature. i Jerry was a nice little girl. Uy-and-by he should perhaps marry hei-. That ! was the sum total of his thoughts. I As for t here being anything bet ween ! the mngnificont Bellenden and the I little, wild, unformed Highland lassie, j tho very idea would have been absurd and preposterous in his oyo at this tune, at least. Ho therefore had no hesitation about walking straight up the room, and. as wo have said, neither saw nor heard anything. "Have you said 'Thank jcu' for your pretty bonnet?" inquired Bellenden, with an air of having done so himself. "And can you interpret tho hidden language ot flowers, itaymona." iioeauso unless you can, you are not worthy to receive them, and so I have boon saying to your cousin,"' So that was what he had been saying. Look at him. and at Ccraldine, and at tho piece of fragrant heliotrope, whose amorous significance young Cecil a'l r,t once calleit to mind, it did jr.st occur to tho latter, unsuspicious as ho had been half a minute before, that perhaps, all things considered, it might have been well to have left tho words unsaid. TO HE CONTINUED. In Western Australia. G. M. Donnelly of New York, who is just returning from an extended stay in the gold fields cf Western Australia, gave rather an interesting account of some of the features of the life in that region to a circle of acquaintances in the corridor of the Southern last night. "Gold in that country," he said, "is more plentiful than water. In going there you must be prepared not only to get nothing washed, but never to even wash yourself. You wear your shirt until you can wear it no longer, and then you discard it for another. Washing yourself is not to be thought of, for you have to buy water, and even in that way it is hard to get enough tor drinking purposes. People there would consider it almost a crime for a man to use water to bathe In when there so many poor wretches who are nearly perishing for a drink. The men there look more like a tribe of red Indians than civilly ed white men. Spe:iuing about washing makes me think of a curious 6lght while there. One morning, as I was taking a trip up into the hills, I notice I a digger, quite nude, standing in his tent door, and with the utmost gravity brushing himself ail over with a clothes-brush. He was trying to dust the dirt from his body, employing the same means that he would to d st a suit of clothes. .St Louis GlobeDemocrat Ijitndon's Water Supply. In London, the largest city in tho world, the water is furnished by com panies and is charged for by the quantity. No one has a free faucet or can afford to waste his water. Every family bargains for as many gallons per diem as it needs, and this amount is placed in tanks. Then the water is shut oft. If the family uses it up by noon it gets no more until the next day unless it can borrow ot its neighbor. inere is no waste. The water is all measured and paid for. With three times our population London does not use one-third as much water as Chicago does simply because the water is not wasted. In Chicago the city furnishes the water, and every one is free to do with it what he pleases, and the result is anarchy in water. The man on the third story has no rights the man on the second is bound to respect, and the man on the first floor cheats both of them by running water via tho sewers into the river and lake. So Ion.? as there is disregard for human rights by human hogs this waste will continue, and those on the upper stories will suffer because those on lowersories are running water all day to cool their rooms or to food their lawns in other words, are letting millions of gallons run into tho sewers without being used at all. . Tho Czar l'lnTod the Trombone. Heroic impressions of tho lato Czar receive something of a shock when wo read the story that a few nights beforo ho died he got up about midnight, and, feeling better, began to play on tho trumbone. The autocrat of all tho Russias. and a man sick unto death, nrising in tho still hours of the night, to perform a tune on the trombone is a somewhat grotosqeo picture. The account further relates that t ho Czar's doctor, acharin, was so put out by tho noiso that he sent a noto to hi Majesty asking that it I o stopped, and that his Majesty was so incensed by this reflection on his musical accomplishments that ho returned a messageto the ell'cct that if the doctor did not i like tho music he might leave the- j palace. Of tho barbarian Peter the I Great this anecdote might have been , related and it would not have seem-od out of character, but it is a strange ono i to toll of a Czar at tho onu of tho nineteenth century.
