Prof. Rogers will deliver an address on temperance in the Christian church, Smithville, at 10 a. m., Sunday. The oration of .1. 15. Wilson at Unionvillc, on Decoration Day, is spoken of in terms of highest praise by those who heard it. Business has been distressingly dull during the past ten days. The unseasonable weather may have had something to do with this. Dudley Smith :.nd wife entertained S. C. Dobb.ns of Shoals, Ind., last Saturday, while he was here in attendance upon the Prohibition convention. The Grand Lodge K. of P. will meet at Indianapolis to-day, Tuesday. S. E. Caruiichacl and H. J. Brannock are regularly elected delegates from the Lodge at this place. The hotel building, at one time occupied by Mr. Bundy has been rented by Dell. Whisnand. He will operate the hotel soon, and be a competitor for public patronage. Of the 4:1 persons who applied for license to teach, at the April examination, but ten were successful. Three for i'-tr months, five for twelve months, and two for six months. A new floor has been laid m the office of the National Hotel. This is one of the mi st home-like hotels in the country and scores of traveling men make it a point to reach Bloomington each week in order that they may spend Sunday at the 'National.' Roy Feltus has joined Burton & Belford's circus, at Marion, Ind., and will run the candy, peanut and lemonade business for Harry Howard, who has purchased the refreshment privileges of the show. On Thursday last Eddie Carmichael, while playing in the yard at home, fell while holding a piece of wood in his mouth. The stick penetrated the roof of his mouth some distance and made a very ugly wound. It is healing rapidly now, however. City Marshal Owens says there i too much "social conversation and games" going on here, and he proposes to break it up even if he is compelled to arrest all of 'em, even to the "little one and have the matter "solemnized" before Mayor Buskirk. On Saturday, June Oth, the congregation of Walnut St. Pres. church will meet in the audience room of the church to discuss the resignation of the pastor, as well as to arrive at some decision as to his successor. j Prices are slashed in all departments of the star store. ! It will be remembered that Judge Sheeks, formerly of Bloomington, died at Austin, Texas, in the month of March, that his son James Sheeks, who was here on a visit lest summer, died in April, and word was received last week that James Sheeks' Si-year old son had just died afler a brief illness. The three spring months have been phenomenally fatal to the Sheeks family. Some members of the "Criterian Club" went out into the woods and pastures east of town, on Stevens' creek, Memorial Day, and pretended that it was summer: got ants in their victuals, bit themselves with misquitoes, and let the hugs crawl over their clothes just like a regular pic nic occasion. One poor lonely bug tried to crawl down P. B. Smith's spine and he never came back. City schools will close on Friday next, then the children will be free to play till September. The bondsmen of F. 0. Stannard paid 1,000 into the federal court at Indianapolis Friday. Now they want to lind Stannard, and will make a special effort to do so. If Yinee Williams ever "sets eyes on him" Stannard had better throw up his hands. -The city of Martinsville is putting in a system of waterwoiks with eight miles of mains, at a cost of i?ii,t0o. The waterworks of Bloomington, although in an unfinished condition, has liens amounting to about KlSO,000 filed against it, and it has but six miles of mains and no standpipe nothing but a pond and pumping station. Parties demanded 00,000 to put in a system of waterworks at Martinsville, and since it has been done by home people for 22,000 the inquiry arises: "Is there not a large margin for profit in this difference of price The Louisville excursion last Wednesday was extensively patronized: about 100 persons having taken passage on the train when it left this station. The excursionists spent the day enjoyably stumbling over tobacco hogsheads and walking out in the gutters to es is dodge the "kulled" people who slouched along the pavements six abreast. back, but that is the way are done nowadavs. things Decoration or Memorial Day was properly observed Wednesday in Bloomington, and it seemed that there were more people in attendance than was ever seen on our streets before. The weather that had been threatening all morning cleared oil beautifully by 1 o'clock and the afternoon, was perfect. The program as prepared was carried out with great success and every number was carefully observed. The speaker of the day, Dr. Par ret of Lafayette, delivered an eloquent oration which was frequently applauded. On the part of the Woman's Kelief Corps Mrs. Pauline Pearson made a plea for a soldiers' monument. Miss Ella Nuckols favored the audience with a declamation, entitled ''Unknown.' The procession then formed and proceeded to the cemetery, where the decoration of the soldiers' graves followed. The procession was unusually large and the citizens renerally took more interest than usual in the details. Forty-three persons made application for teachers' license at the recent examination, indicating that many persons need employment. A report of the apportionment of t he school fund to the various counties of the .State shows that Monroe county has persons of school age within its borders. -Kreuger's barber shop is undergoing some very desirable improvements in the way of new furniture, and late style appliances.
