It is common report that an armed watchman has been put on duty in the corridor just outside the President's bed-room door. This is the first time such precaution has been taken since President Lincoln was in the White House, it is said. The night guard began his duty last Saturday night. Two other guards are on duty at night in the White House. One is stationed at the door of the main entrance; the second at the foot of k ,..,;...,.. i,i; k ,i - - n floor, where the sleeping rooms are. xnc rate Jtiousc detail irorn the police force consists of thirteen men in the course of the twentyfour hours. An additional detail will be made next Monday, when the Industrials are expected to arrive in greater force. At that time the gates in the great iron fence which inclose the Pennsylvania avenue front of the White House grounds will be closed, it is expected, and only those who can show legitimate business will 1 allowed to enter. It does not appear that Mr. Cleveland is at all disturbed by the possibility of danger, but some of his cabinet officers and their subordinates are growing nervous and insisting upon these preparations. Attorney General Smith h fdven an opinion that all of the township officers elected next No vember will qualify and take their offices immediately after the elec tion, except the Trustee and As sessors. who will not take their offices until August, 1895. Two significant facts, stated bv Senator Hale, of Maine, in his speech in the Senate a few days ago, show most conclusively why the south should not be allowed to impose free trade on this country: 1. New York alone has more manufactures than the entire fifteen southern states. 2. Of the entire amount of wages paid the south contributes Vat one-eighth. Mrs. Hiram Lindley is visiting Capt. Alexander and wife, at Bedford. Spring colts arc coming to town in great numbers. This is a crop that severe winters did not affect injuriously in Monroe co. A number of yjung people went to Trnitt's cave, last Saturday, and report an enjoyable afternoon. There are 1,625 persons of school age in Blootnington, as shown by the census just completed, as against 1,545 as shown a year ago. Hoffman, the barber who formerly worked for Gusr Kreu ger, tried to commit suicide with robgh on rats, at his home in Spencer, last week, but failed. The Butler nine came down to Bloomington Saturday morning to meet I. U. base ball team in a friendly game. As a result the score stood Butler 3; I. U., 14. The Butler boys might play efainney but as base-ballists they are failures. "Bob" Smith, as he was known, a law student who graduated with '92, was found in bis room in Evansvillc, Saturday afternoon, dead, having committed suicide by shooting. No reasoirj is assigned in tne dispatches for the rash act. Some one forced his way into the home of Kobcrt Rice," last Saturday afternoon, and stole a fiddle, some ham, chicken, etc. Rice will be known as the man who was leader of the Stanford glee club, and sang "Vote for Grover Cleveland, c-a-r-ly in the morning!"' The Senatorial convention of the Democrats will lie hekl at Nashville on Thursday. A rule adopted a year ago by which delegations were required to stand by their instructions will insure Mr. Cravens' nomination, notwithstanding the candidacy of P. H. McCormick. A Cravens chairman will rule that way, if he can be secured, and there can be no successful protest. On Sunday morning 125 Odd Fellows in full regalia marched to the M. E. church, south College Auenue, where addresses in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Odd Fellowship were made. The exercises were opened with prayer by Rev. Reed, following which was the address by J. B. Wilson. The sermon was preached by Rev. Steele. The mask- by the choir was excellent. ft GLARING ABUSE.

Advertising In tbe Parlor, In the Bedroom and In tiie Graveyard. IS THERE NO IIELIEF? (Indianapolis Sentinel.) The practice of manufacturers who stamp advertisements all over articles they sell is a source of vexation to those who purchase their products. One instance of this is in stoves. This is the most prominent article in the room on account of the mission it fulfills, not only is the name of the ruanu- " Pi uneui, mi : private mark ami the name he has j?- i... l : a. ! endowed it with. A gentleman recently hunted through all the stores for a stove that did not have branded across the front the advertisement of the maker, aud was unable to find one. The result is that where a stove could be made one of the ornaments of a room, it is nothing more than a flaring advertisement of the founder. A merchant cannot have a sign painted without the advertisement of the painter in the most conspicuous corner. Iron work has east in it the name of the founder; steps are marred in the same way, and a building costing thousands of dollars is usually nothing but a mosaic of advertisements. Such things are vulgar and detract from beauty and artistic effect. A striking instance occurred lately in connection with the granite monument ex-President Har rison erected to the memory of his wife in Crown Hill cemetery. The order was given to a firm which has done a great deal of artistic work. It was erected and Mr. Harrison called out to inspect it. It was an artistic piece of work, but in the most prominent corner of the block that formed the base was the name of the firm in raised letters. The monument was not even marked by the name of her in whose honor it had been erected, tne simple ramily name "Harrison" having been all that was wanted. But here was the name of the firm nearly as prom inent. Mr. Harrison's eye caught the lettering in the corner as soon as hia gaze rested on the monu ment, and turning to a memlier of the firm notified him that not un til every trace of that advertise ment had been removed would he accept it. There was some hesitation, but the ex-president knew just what he was talking about, and the lettering was removed. It was impossible to do the work without leaving some trrco and even now the place where the ad - vertisement was cut on the monu ment can be seen. Another abuse of the same character is that of compelling purchasers to carry packages of goods from a store, wrapped in black paper, blue paper, or some distinct and flaring mark that points directly to the store from which the bundle came. You do not wish to incur the ill-will of a rival store keeper, and you have neither time nor inclination to stop and explain why you did not buy of the other man, who very often glares at you through his storo window as you pass by; and yet after paying as much for the geods as you think you ought, you are forced to make a walking bulletin board of yourself to advertise the other man's store. These people should be asked to do their advertising in the newspapers, and uot compel your wives and daughters to carry their advertisements about the streets of the city Remember that at Indianapolis on Monday, May 7, there will be a "Wagner Musical Festival;" matinee in the aftcrnoan, performance at night. There will be a chorus of 400 singers, 50 musicians, together with a number of soloists. On Monday, May 7, there will be a festival of music at Indianapolis which will be worth the attention of our local lovers of the divine art. Sousa, the wonderful band; there will lie a chorus of 400 singers, in addition to some of the most noted prima donnas of the age. Rates have been provided for on all railroads entering the city. The program has been prepared with great care and will delight those who can appreciate music of this character. Tickets may lie procured at Wulschner's Music Store, 42 N. Pcnn. St., Indianapolis. THE PUJBLIC HEALTH. As there is great danger of an cpi-

I domic the coming season, I hereby give notice that the City Hoard of llealth 1 will strictly enforce nil sanitary laws i and regulations, and that no cxeoptions will be made. The State Board ; of Health has just issued a circular i which it says: 1. This Hoard has issued a code of rules, a copy of which is herewith endosed. Courts have held that in order to make them binding upon all. they must be promulgated, made known, by county boards of health, by publication in newspapers, in order to comply with the requirements of the statute. ''It shall be the duty oi countv boards of j Health to promulgate and enforce all rules and regulations of the State Board of llealth, in their respective ' comities, which may be issued from ! t ime to t ime, for the preservation of the ; public health, and for the prevention i of epidetnie and contagious diseases, i Section (. page 18. Acts of lS'.U. It is also necessary that county ; boards adopt such rules and record them in the record of their proceedings and that all boards of health, hold regI ular meetings for the transaction of business pertaining to the public health. "2. Town and city boards of health boards are given power to embody the rules of the State Board in ordinances, and by that means make them effective. If such ordinances are passed, and in force, they have the means at hand to combat epidemic and contagious diseases, whenever an outbreak occurs. Such outbreaks need not ex tend beyond the first victims, because the methods of prevention are known and the legal powers to enforce them are abundantly provided. "3. Prompt action on the part ot noaras oi health, ana an intelligent enforcement of the- rules, in cases of eontagions and infectious diseases, is certain to save life, suffering and expense. "4. AH births, deaths and contagious diseases occuring within towns and cities having boards of health, must be reported to the secretaries of such boards, and after recording the same, at the close of the month, such original reports must he forwarded to the secretary of the county boards. It is the duty of the county secretary to snpply all physicians practicing in his county with the necessary blanks, ami to compel them to comply with the law, by making reports within the time prescribed by the statute. "5. The rules rcquir. that houses, in which contagious diseases are prevailing, be flagged or carded. But when this is done, the health officer's duty does not end. He must see to it that a strict quarantine is maintained, and when the patient has recovered or died, have the house thoroughly disinfected in accordance with instructions contained in the preventable disease circular herewith sent. "6. Whenever any serious outbreak of contagions or infectious diseases occurs, health officers must at once notify this board t ither by telegram or otherwise. '". Especial attention is called to rule 13 which provides that all funerals of persons dead from small pox, scarlet fever, diptheria or cholera, be strictly private. This must be construed to mean that no more persons attend such funerals than sire necessary to convey and inter the body." As a sworn orfi jer to uphold and enforce the law, I shall strictly enforce all provisions of the law as set forth above. .fosEfii M. Rogkhs, Secretary City Board of Health. No enterprise in Illoonington has had a more rapid or substantial growth than the Bloo'.nington National Savings and Loan Association. It was organized about five months ago, aud it has already loaned over 35,000 on first class mortgage security. At the last meeting a new feature was adopted by the directors that promises to make this Association still more popular. It is a by-law providing for special deposite stock, which gives any one an opportunity to deposito any amount from one dollar up, and for which the association will pay 0 per cent. This stock is subject to no tines, dues or assessments, and the interest is payable the last days of June and December.
