The wife and little daughter of Chas. Alexander have returned to their home in Burlington,Iowa. Hon. Will Cumback was in town Saturday, renewing old acquaintances. Died, on Thursday last, at his home in Van Buren tp., Joseph T. Eller, aged 16 years, with heart disease. Saturday was "St. Patrick's day in the morning,'' and it was a lovely day, too. Usually the 17th is raw and blustry. Wm. Thomas accompanied Chesley Drake to Indianapolis, last week, and Drake had one of bis eyes removed by a specialist. Marbles and tops are all "the go'' among the boys now. New " Kmncts are worrying the opposite sex. Bishop Knickerbacker held confirmation services in the Episcopal church, on Friday night and preached oa Saturday. The "penny" social at Walnut St. Pre church, Thursday night, was a grand success, and should be repeated. A "social" was given last Saturday night by the ladies of St. Charles Catholic church, at the home of Roger Kerr. Enoch Fuller is meeting with much success in the sale of stone for building, purposes. The prices are villianously low, however, The "come up seven" fellows had to face the Mayor last week to the number of about twenty. $14.50 was the price paid for this fun, by each participant. Presley Mathers, a former well known citizen of this place, is visiting friends here accompanied by his family. He is located in New Albany, with the Western Union telegraph company. When all the projected new buildings on the public square are completed, there will be no lack of rooms for those who desire them, so don't be frightened at their scarcity now. After two-thirds of the stone quarry companies have passed into the hands of receivers perhaps they will combine to maintain prices at a respectable figure and thus insure financial success. Bed sandstone, which is not half so good as oolitic limestone, is never sold lower than 50c. The space on the south side of the square occupied by the Hughes barber shop and Mobley's dry goods store will soon be covered with a new two-story building, it is related, and rooms will also be built on the lot south -of the bank Work is to be begun as soon as possible. The property belongs to Mrs. Buskirk. The spring fights were duly inaugurated last Friday. A white man and colored man fought with their months on the postoffice corner, and two very prominent citizens fought with pieces of oolitic limestone down on south College Avenue. Then two dogs, a hull and a Newfoundland, had a

The Death of Judge 8heek3 From the Austin (Tex.) Statesman.
! The announcement of the death of i ! Judge Shocks, coming as it did so suddenly, was a shock to this community. ! in which he had so long lived. He had j acquired fame as a luwvcr and a politieian ill Indiana before he came to Texas. He was a eo-temporarv of llendrieks, Meltanald and such men in Indiana, fejs native State, and stood abreast with such men both in law and polities. Judge Sheeks. when he came to Texas and located at Austin at once took rank with the leading lawyers at the capital and hold that position all his life, t pon ttie most recondite ami ab stract principles of the law he has lonjr 1hhii regarded as authority, lie Had a legal mind, and by industry in his pro fession he obtained prominence as a safe counsellor, and by xhrewdiie.-s and sagacity his success as a practitioner was established and ma intaiued m all courts of the State. As a man he was genial and kindly in his disposition. and he was interested in all the current affairs -if life, especially as connected with his profession, and politics, the latter of which he was always interested in, not with a view of his own political advancement but on account of his devotion to Democratic principles. Judge-Sheeks left Indiana because he did not enjoy the privilege of the expression of his opinions as freely as he knew he could elsewhere. He came to Texas and found himself in full sympathy with the Democratic party of this State, he did not seek to take advantage of it to attempt to obtain office as so many men who came here from the North did on account of the disfranchisement of men of talent "to -the manner born." For the benefit of the people of Texas he did accept a judgeship and dis charged the duties of the oflice with eminent fidelity and great ability. .Tudcre Sheeks has long been a valuable citizen of this city and he carries to his grave the best and kindest sympaunes of this whole community. Tho Genuine Article the Name Blown in the Bottle. To the Editor: J. Scott Harrison, .brother of the ex-President, (and who is a Democrat) was nominated by Cleveland' for surveyor of customs for the port of Kansas City, Mo.
