Singular no one does that kind of work here. D. O. Spencer has been visiting his daughter, who is teaching school in Madison county. Spencer was impressed by the wonderful growth of the gas district. Thirty -seven converts have been added to the 2d Baptist church (colored) w. 8th st. during the recent revival meetings. Glad to know that the good work is still going on. People are making inquiries for building lots now, every day, and many have visited Prospect Hill addition and invested therein. They are certainly the finest, most desirable lots and in the handsomest location in the city. To-day (Tuesday) at Indianapolis, the U. S. court will hear the arguments for and against the i. I appointment of a receiver for the waterworks. Judge Duncan isj attorney for those who demand a receiver, while Louden & Louden appear for the company. The father of Mrs. James Kelly, Timothy Mahony, died at the home of his daughter last Friday evening, in his 80th year. It will be remembered that Mrs. Mahony died recently. Funeral services by Father Bogeman of St. Charles Catholic church. The Kappa Kappa Gamma ladies gave a reception on Friday Iast at the home of Miss Nellie Showers, north Walnut street. The young ladies received from 2 to 4 and from 3 to 5. The attendance was unusually large, and refreshments and music of the most enjoyable character added to the pleasure of the guests. The Republican city committee met on Friday night last and changed the time for holding the city convention from March 6th to Tuesday, Feb. 20th. Polls open from 3 till 8 p. m. The following resolution was adopted: "Resolved, that no person will be entitled to vote in the convention who is net a legal voter in the city election in May.' England refuses to give mail contracts to tho steamers flying the American flag. She permits do steamers except those carrying her own flag to carry her mails. SunTTnrset' air example by repealing a tariff which protects our own workmen for the benefit of her manufacturers ? Tlie number of pensioners en the rolls December 31 last was but 130 more than on the first of July, while the number of claims now pending is over 700,000. This shows at a glance how Hoke Smith is amusing himself at the expense of the man who "marched through Georgia." The fees and perquisites of the attorney-general's office, of this State, mak? it a higher salaried office than that of chief justice of the supreme court. With a clean cutting knife and a dull con science $10,000 a yeas is a possibility. Green Smith has these requisites, besides gall and spinal column. trankfort Iscws. Grover Cleveland is warmly and comfortably housed, draws his pay regularly and don't have to pay rent, so what does he care for the poor laboring man who by Toting for "a change" beat himself oat of a job and now finds it impossible for him to pay rent, or to buy coal or provisions. Tlie free wool piovision of the Wilson bill is designed to go into effect on August 1, 1894, and lhe assault of the wool producers of the country on the Democratic party will take place about three months later, or on the Tuesday immediately following the first Monday in November. The Indianapolis Sentinel says of one of the industries of Anderson, Ind. : "The American tia-plate plant never loses a minute's time, and is turning at 3,500 boxes per week. They are over-loaded with ordersiand in a few vi ecks will be compelled to double their present capacity." How long has it been since the Sentinel declared that tin plate was not made in this country and could not lm made here.
The Wafer Works Trouble
The City Council Has Its Sa. The reasons why the city ought not t o accept the water works are so many that it seems that they need hardly to be stated, but we submit a few of them: 1st. The water works was presumably for the benetit of the city in case of tire. The city has 000 worth of first-class tire apparatus and which is practically worthless by reason of the threads in the hvdrants and hose bring different in size. The water works j company was notified of this dofeet when only one or two hy - aranis uau oeen put up, out no attention was paid to it. By accepting the works all this apparatus would be practically wort hless. 2nd. A part of the screws on the valves in the hydrants arc left and a part right. handed, which is never found in a first-class job, such as the city was to have. 3rd. The plant has never yet been tested; three of the valves have already been repaired, and no one knows the number actually out of repair. Mr. ErlanJ has had rings cut to put on the others, which is a vorv ordinary make -shift. 4th. The material was all to le first-class, yet the hydrants are shop keepers" that is, such as have been left over and for which there is no sale. They were not made for this climate and no one over saw such put in a system in
this country. ,,,, , . , , , , t- t 5th. The plant was to be com- -lho. nSh. yl pleted and the streets put in repair f1l1 ""Arable damage in he bv Aug. 1st, 1893. The Water Works Company has ; never asked the city to accept the ! plant. The officers of the com- j pany will not claim that it is com-; pleted within the terms 01 the contract. All of this dirhculty and controversy is caused by Mr. Erland, who is only a contractor with the Water Works Company, and with whom the city has had no dealings, and in no way recog nizes. It is here where all the trouble lies. He desires the city to accept an incomplete plant unconditionally, in order that he may liegin to draw interest on the bonds he holds. We dare say the Water Works Company, couiposof some of our best citizens, will not insist upon such a thing being done. J. M. Cakpbetx, Robkkt C. Foster, Ika M. The government has to distribute over $40,000,000 each quarter to pay the soldiers and it takes money to do it. Do honest people object to paying an honest debt i If they do not, how can they pay it without money? When the lionur of tlie United States was concerned in disputes with Chili and Hawaii during President Harrison's term every democratic sheet in the country prouiply sided with the foreign nations. In the episode at Rio do Janeiro a few days ago, Admiral Benham, aclinir under instructions from a Democratic administration, defended American interests bravely, promptly and effectively. For this every Republican newspaper in the country applauded him.
