One of our Democratic exchanges complainingly aays that "the pension expenses hare risen to the enormous sum of $160,000,000 per annum, and the country is suffering therefrom. ' ' Suppose it has risen to that sum and the country is "suffering'' therefrom That sum will not pay the widows who lost their fathers, and the old veterans who sacrificed their health, that the country mignt lire, one per cent, on the suffering they hare endured and do yet endure, Mr. Cleveland thinks the cause of our financial troubles is the Sherman act, but the country was never more prosperous than under the same act just before his election. Western democrats think it is the refusal to coin silver, but last year, with bullion purchased and no silver coined, wis toe most prosperous ever known. The real cause lies in the uncertainty of what the policy of the administration will be, both as to finances, and the tariff. Capital is carrying as little sail as possible. Orders have been curtailed and purchases restricted. And this state of things will continue until the President and congress get together and find out what they want and what they are intending to da The net is the president and his cabinet are in deep water and don't know how to swim. The people of Lee's Summit, Mo., are wrought up over a gi gantic swindle just uncovered in their midst. For a week eight men have been operating a feather renovator, and it now appears that the company have been returning green chicken feathers to the customers and selling the good feathers originally sent them for renovmtka to commission houses. The green feathers were worth from 4 cents to 10 cents and die others from 40 cents to 60 cents per pound. Six of the eight men are under arrest, and indignation runs high. It was learned that 730 pounds of feathers were shipped to a St. Louis commission house by express, prepaid, on Friday, by this company. The express charges on this shipment were over $10. The gang spent money lavishly. They had six horses and wagons and did a rushing business. They are charged with embezzlement and prosecution will be pushed. - How te Keep Mea. Editors Indiana Fanner. I notice in your issue of March 25, the query of how to keep meat, and the plan of using pulverised borax. No doubt that is a good plan, and I shall try it on one or two pieces. Here is what every farmer should do. In one corner of your smoke-house make an extra room, say 3x5 feet using common flooring, with an absolutely tight floor, top and door, all tight, and it will be as dark as the black -acne of darkness. When your meat is welt salted hang it in this room; pot an iron kerne in it and with a few dean chip give it a good smoking; then let it hang till it is used. Be sure and make flie room tight. It will only cost a trifle and it is good for a life tune. Try it, 1 know the meat will be clean, and as perfect as when you pot it there. . I have seen it tried for years. Vermillion Co. Two Be. DcsBSs The dress that interests most women just now is that which will be worn at Hie exposition. It should be of material fight in weight, smart in style and severe in make, as demanded by gentility. Fortunately, fashion no longer countenances the train for outdoor wear, and women will not need to have their attention distracted from the world' a wonders by the care of their petticoats. The skirts of these gowns will not be up to the extreme of fullness, but rather, cut with a neat flare and a width of not more than four yards. Besides the traveling gown the woman who goes in for com fort as well as gentility will have an Eton suit of serge, with the silk or cheviot waists, that may be worn on hot days without the jacket. A China silk of subdued color and simple make will be -almost a matter of necessity if the pilgrimage is planned for the summer months, and the traveling cloak, with detachable cape must be included in the outfit. Capes in tins day of their popularity will outrank in preference the jacket, which is less easily adjusted, and indeed many of the traveling gowns will be made with a cape of the same material as the gown. N. Y. Sun. Agents go to a house and make a speech something like this: "We want to place a few picturos in representative families of the city as an advertisement. We will enlarge a picture for you for the cost of the materials, and in return you are expected to speak m good word for us among your foands. Mr. Agent collects some 66 or 75 cents as the mere cot of the material and then disappears, and forever.

Col. "Dick" Thompson, of Terre Haute, recently celebrated his eighty-fourth anniversary. A dinner with family friends marked the event, but a large number of friends and neighbors called during the day. His mind is clear and active, and his physical condition very materially improved, he having recovered from the indisposition which marked the winter and spring months, says the Indianapolis News. Nervous Prostration How Cured Campbellsburg, Ind., June 1, 1893 Faris Bros. I bad been suffering from nervous prostration for a year, and at times feared that I would become a raving maniac. While in Blooming ton on a visit to relations I was induced to buy a bottle of South American Nervine at your drup store. The first bot tle naa a magical enect, and 1 01 course continued the use of the medicine. I am happy to say that I grew slowly but steadily better, until I am now as well as ever. Of course I feel the infirmities of age. but so far as the disease is con cerned I am a new woman. Yours truely, HaSSAB J. WlLBKBFOBCK. "Lazy capital is more to be shunned than lazy men," said a speaker at Columbus last week, at a public meeting in honor of John S. Crump, a gentleman who has given that city a fine theater, a model hotel and a completely equipped electric railway. The man who ran for vice president on the Democratic ticket last fall is not entirely forgotten. A fourth-class postoffice in Georgia, with an annual revenue of $16.50 attached thereto, has been named "Adlai." Congressman Dunn, of Ar kansas, one of the New York custom house smelling committee. when he heard of the Ford thea ter disaster, exclaimed: "I would not have cared if it had been the pensioners instead of those poor clerks." Before Hoke Smith, Judge Loughran and Dunn get through some of the pensioners may wish that they had been in the place of the poor clerks. Poverty and abuse often make life unbearable. T. H. Express. The supremo court has recently held that a Township Trustee has no right to hire a teacher when a majority of the patrons petition against such employment. The fee and salary bill passed by the legislature of 1891 has been declared by the Marion circuit court to be unconstitutional. It will undoubtedly bo appealed to the supreme court. If there is a crying demand for an extra session of Congress to settle financial troubles that exist now, why put it off till September ? If Cleveland was sick would ho put off sending for a doctor till he was dead ? That's about the way he's managing the extra session of Congress. What will be done now with the ministers who by their vote3 declared themselves of the same belief as Dr. Briggs ? The heresy trial has evidently developed the existence of a vast amount of heresy. Took a Degree, "At any rate my daughter is marrying a scholar," said the proud mother. "I did not know that he was an educated man," said the neighbor. "Oh, yes he is. He's a graduate of the Kceley Institute."' Indianapolis News.. The Odd Fellows of Indiana will proceed at once to build a home for old and indigent members of the order. The home will be located at Indianapolis. The project is a noble one and will have the hearty co-operation of every member of the order in good standing. "What time was it," asked the judge of the rural witness, "when the prisoner passed your house?" "Well, sir," said the witness, "ef I don't disremcmbcr, hit wur 'long about watermillion time." Statistics show that a woman's chance to marry varies according to age. From 15 to 20 years of ago it is 14 per cent. ; 20 to 25, 52 percent.; 25 to 30,, 18 per cent. ; 30 to 35, 15 per cent. ; 35 to 40, 3f per cent., 40 to 45, 2 per cent. ; 45 to 50, of 1 per cent. ; 50 to 55, of 1 per cent. Now that thousands of depositors have been rushing to various banks to withdraw their deposits, and bring ruin to the banks and destruction to public confidence,, it will be a good time for the sneak thieves and house-breakers to get m tneir work, it is an easy mat ter for these gentry to "spot" the men who withdraw their funds from bank to be hoarded in the old Bock at home, and it is enough easier to make a raise out of a chimney corner or a garret in a private residence than to crack one of the huge safes in the bank. A soldier died in Boston re cently who was of the stamp that commanding officers tie to. He was Major General John M. Corse, the soul of the bloody fight at Al latoona Pass, and the man to whom Sherman signaled "Hold the fort," and whose valiant re sistance in that spot inspired bankey's widely known hymn. Gen. Corse was ordered to hold Allatoona, with its great mass of supplies, against a force from Hood of superior numbers. The confederate commander, Maj. Gen. French, invited Corse to surrender and prevent needless bloodshed. General Corse sarcastically replied that he waa ready for just that thing, and the battle began. The Union redoubts were charged eight times, and then the enemy fell back whipped. Next day General Corse wrote to one of Sherman's staff: "I am short a cheek bone and an ear, but am able to whip all holl yet." For this fight Corse was brevetted Major General. The famous dispatch that Sherman signaled to Corse was from Kenesaw Moun tain, and was to bid him stand fast, having safoly arrived, for the defense of the imperiled 3,000,000 rations at Allatoona. We had better not cut the pension roll just yet. There arc several hundred thousand more of these old fellows who won their stipends in tbe days when gallant Corse grasp ed his stars. The idea of making a systematic tight upon men who went through mch experience.
