Powder The contest for award of premiums to prettiest babies at the 4th of July celebration was quite interesting. The "woods seemed full" of babies, and some thirty or more were placed in competition for premiums. The committee, Enoch Fuller, Dillon Talbott and Ed. Seward, had a difficult and thankless contract, as the disappointed aspirants (or the parents) "knew the committee to be prejudiced." 1st premium went to Andy Hazel's child, 2d to Curt. Koons' baby, and 3d to Charles Stinebcrg's. Noue of the committee are anxious to serve again, and the life insurance companies have refused to take risks on them. The committee fled immediately after the a vard : Talbott to Washington tp., Seward grabbed his valises and sneaked for the train, while Fuller has been hiding ever since in the Central stone qnarry. Ed., although a fleet runner, was overtaken by one of the disappointed mothers from Brown county, just as he climbed on the platform of his train, and then and there snatched bald. A remarkable and convincing object-lesson on the 4th of July, was the number ot babies m the crowd squalling arguments that taught the indifferent onlooker that 1892 is to go down into history as one of the most fruitful years of the century. There were babies to the right, babies to the left babies carried in arms, pushed in wagons, dragged by the arras, and in many instances sleeping quietly in the the grass, with the flies and bugs playing base ball on their ribbon ornamented garments. As an exposition of the fact that the Nation is not dying out it wsb a howling and in many cases a squalling success. Seemed like the majority of the women had babies to care for. H-o-o-rah for America anyhow ! The "shaking" people who are running a peculiar form ot religious frenzy down in Plk tp. have add(d a murder to their other sensations, it seems that a fellow named Forhin went to the meeting in company with a young woman, and as is . quite cummin with tough voting people down in "rattlesnake hollow," it is said that be was drunk, noisy and boisterous so i much so as to interrupt au old man i nmud Murphy who was wrestling in urayer, and was in danger of being "tripped up in the wrassle." i Murphy's son took exception to' Fur bin's lack of veneration, and j argued the question so vigorously as to inflict two wounds on Forbin ! one in the face and the other in j the thigh. Murphy it seems had Ihe best of the argument, for Forbin died Boon afterwards, and Mur phy will have to answer to a charge j of murder, iu Lawrence circuit ' court, as the shooting, fortunately , for Monroe county, occurred Just over the south line in Lawrence. That "shakin"' religion, as they call it, is a pretty good thing, judging by results. The whistle of the traction engine is now heard frequently, and wheat threshing is well advanced. On the 4th and 5th Sabbaths of this month Rev. Jas. M. Faris of New Concord, O., will occupy the pulpit oi the Reformed Pres. church, South Walnut street. Frank Fee and wifo have been down from Greencastle visiting Blooniington friends. Frank is quite gruy, but as jolly as ever. Frank kept a grocery stun twentyfive years ago iu the room at present occupied by the First National Bank, when Bloomington had a population of about 2,000. He gut lost in our city last week. The "Corner" people never do anything by halves. Their greased pole, on the 4th, was one of the leading attractions, and after about 20 fellows had "shinned" up and "slid down" till the grease was pretty well worn off, some longlimbed chap from Brown county who had evidently climbed many shell-bark hickory trees after squirrels, began to methodically hug tbe pole and wind around it till the top was reached, when de liberately resting his left hand on the top be reached in bis pooket.got his knife and cut the strings by Which boots, valise aud hat were suspended, lhis was not in accorduuoe with the generally accept cd regulations of greased pole climbing, but the "Corner people permitted it without "kicking.
