Lewis Williams ot Bean, didn't "get a smell" in the Democratic convention, for the office of Auditor. Lewis thought he was solid. George Thornton sold twenty acres of his stone land to W, W. Wicks, Trustee, for $5,000. In addition to this Thornton was paid $200 as an option. The rattle of the harvesting machines is now heard in Monroe county. Tt is sweet music when accompanied by the assurance of large crops. The young ladies' missionary society of the M. E. churoh had an ice cream social in the court house park Saturday night. There was a large attendance. Maj. H. O. Long of the 3d Infantry inspected Co. H, on Friday night last. This company still ranks high. A third channeler was purchased hv the Morton C. Hiiuter Stone Co., last week. For a quar ry that has had its track completed only six weeks the Hunter is a lively infant. Sixty-five car loads of first-class stone were shinned out of the first cut. The Ketcbam's Springs old settlers' meeting will be held in August this year, as usual. The sermon will be preached by Gov. Ira Chase on bonday, August 2nth, and it will be worth going miles to hear. Ellettsville teachers for the next year are : Principal, J. W. ! Ray; Assistant, Libbie Fullerton;) Associate Principal, Grant Gallo- ( way; Associate Assistant, Minnie Parks; Primary Department, Barbara Fowler. Petty thieving is still carried on in this city. One night last week the grocery of Wni. Carmi chael was entered, and a quantity of hams and sides st-deit. Meadows' grocery has been entered recently, also, and some meat stolen. The residence of Ed. Socks, on Maple Mights, was struck by lightning on Tupsday evening last. The chimney was destroyed, sonte of the weatherboarding and plastering knocked ulF, but no one was injured, though a half dozen persons were iu the building at the time. Dr. Williams, the dentist who recently removed to this pUce and occupies the house east of Dr. Axtell's, has the sympathy of many people in the loss of his little 3yrar old son, who died with spinal meningitis, on Tuesday last. Applications were filed in the county clerk's office last Wednesday, in five cases, for admission to the central asylum for the insane. They were Lewis Havs of Polk tp Bert. Young of Perry tp., and three persons now at the poor asylum: Mollie Hamilton, Joseph Hamilton, Joseph O. Sink. Recorder Jackson received, on Wednesday lust, a mortgage made by the Water Works Co.. to the Mercantile Trust Co. of Now York. The document covered twenty-five pnges, and by its terms the Trust Co. loan the Water Works people $70,000 for thirty years, at 5 pur cent, interest per annum. A railroad is being built from Chattanooga to Indianapolis, on paper. It is to run through Brown county, touching Nashville, and they say will be completed in 1833. Don't believe it ; do you ? Mr. W. -A surprise party was held in the White House, on Monday last. Gov. McKinley, who had been delegated to do so gently broke the news to Benjamin Harr scn that at Minneapolis the Republicans had nominated him some two weeks before for President. To say that Mr. Harrison was surprised but faintly expresses it, and according to the telegraphic reports Ibe com pany were invited out to the dining room and "ate and ate," just as they do out here in Monroe county when people get to be 70 years old and their friends call on them. Capt, Waiter Howe and family will spend the summer in Bloomington. Chas. Ross has purchased the two-story brick building occupied by John Stpckwell, paying $4,000 for it, Dr, Kirkwood, it is reported, has had a light stroke of paralysis, which affects his voice seriously. Among these from a distance who attended the funeral of Wm, Emery was Elijah Emery of New Albany, a brother of deceased, Says the Salem News s "J. S. He made quite a mash on some of the west side young ladies while in towu, as he is a "bute." Wm. Emery, the harness maker on South College Avenue, died on Tuesday Inst, after a protracted illness. By nn accident many years ago he injured his spine, and ever since was unable to nse his body. His mind was active, however, and he has always done a good and profitable business and steadily accumulated money. Mr. Emery was in his 7 1st year at the time of bis death. Tfie city council at the regular meeting Tuesday night ordered that the bill for the new fire engine be paid, as the machine has been satisfactorily tested. Mr. Kerr petitioned for an improvement of the alley that runs between Morton and Madison streets. To the street committee was referred the opening of Washington street from 8th to 10th streets, a statement having been made by Mayor Buskirk that the matter can now be amicably arranged. A number of new bouses have been erected on this street, but it is almost impassable. A committee of three was appointed to reappraise the lots in the new cemetery. They were C. H. MoPhecters, Charles C. Turner and R. A. Fulk. The prices are said to be too high. An extra night policeman was asked for by Councilman Smith,- Mr. Brannock, on the ground of economy, opposed the appointment of another policeman. Mayor Buskirk thought another policeman was very much needed. A vote was demanded. Ayes Smith, Graves and Foster; Nays Campbell, Brannook and Fess, The Mayor voted yes. An additioual policeman at $30 per month was then appointed in the person of CliBrles Paruell. Kirkwood Avenue, west, was ordered to be made same width as the older portion of the street. Lincoln street, from 1st to 3d, was ordered to be opened.
