His daughter, Mrs. Howard and busbnnd, went on Friday night, May 27th, pretending to pay them a visit, end next day Mr. Howard having business in town persuaded Mr. Brown to go with him. In a short time after they were gone his children began gathering in with baskets well filled. Tbey relumed about one o'clock to find a table
filled with all the good things of the season. When they n them coming they all gathered in the dining room and be knew nothing of it till be opened the door. He could do nothing but shake hand. Alter congratulations were over they were invited to take their places at the table where another surprise was given to both father and mother. A pair of gold frame spectacles were placed under each one's plate. It was their family reunion, no one being present but the family and a brother and wife of Mrs. Brown, snd a sister of Mr. Brown. All enjoyed the day as a family circle should. The children left wishing their parents msny birthdays as pleasant as that one, A Lively Body. A COOHOL THAT COUNSELS. A Worklnv Orgatalnatlnni tbat Isa't AUraM to Tote Its SeatlnaeatB. Then was no circus in town last week, but the city council gave an interesting entertainment Thursday night, at which considerable Itusi ws of importance was transacted, The conncilmen were in their places at an early hour and His Honor presided as usual. The first nura ber on the program was the consid oration of Mr. Foster's resolution asking that the city tax duplicate be prepared by the county auditor and the city tax be collected by the county treasurer. After diacuosion the resolution was passed it being necessary for Mayor xiosktrk to cast the 7th vote. The city board of health, the attorney stated, was composed of the council and it was its right and duty to enforce sanitary rules. Mr. Foster insisted that the city should be renovated, and be was ably seconded by other mem bers. A sidewalk was talked of on Walnut street from 1st to 2 J, and some action taken. A secretary of the board of health wes chofen, in the person of Dr, Mxxweil, his term to expire Jan 1. '93. The vote stood : Dr. Har ris, 2: Dr. Maxwell, 4. The improvement of gutters was ordered on 5th St., from Washing ton to Lincoln. Mr. Cainnhell favored the building of a walk on the south side ot 2d street from Uunn to Walnut. Mr. f ess op posed. Action deterred. The branch tbat runs through the school house grounds was ordered to be cleaned out. The improvement of Kirkwood Avenue was called up by Mr, Brannock, the improvement to be carried to the old corporation line from Jackson street. Mr. Waldroo said that in the petition a majority or teet was not represented as is re quired by law, and thst at the present time it is impossible to sell street improvement bonds. While be mid be was in favor of improve ments he thought that it was ask iag too much to place sidewalks. etc., on both sides to the old cor poration line at present. To this Mr. Brannock responded that juslice to the property owners demand ed tbat the improvements should be ordered at once. It waa finally referred to the city engineer on the motion of Robert C. Foster. The ordinance providing for n1sries was then taken up for con aideration, it having been discussed in caucus. The ordinance was adopted by sections ss read : The Mayor's salary was raised from 9350 to $450, with fees; Campbell and J ess voted against it. The nlary of the City Clerk was reduced from 1500 to $400 ; Carnp: bell voted no. The office of street commissioner. held by Ken. U. Smith, was abol ished. Ayes Campbell, isrannock and Graves ; Noes Smith, Foster and r ess. The Mayor voted yes. The Marshal was then given the duty of clesning streets and alleys and his nlary increased from f 425 to S500 with fees. Fess voted no. The nlary of chief of fire department is still $40, firemen 125, night police $30 per month, conncilmen $7t per annum. City Attorney $300 and fees ; Secretary of school board $40, and other two members $30. The secretary of the board of health will receive $40 per year. It was provided that the city engineer be required to superintend all of the public improvements, with salary raised from $300 to $373. Ayes Brsnnock , Campbell, Graves. Kays Smith, Foster, Fen. The Msyor voted yes. It was twenty minutes till 12 o'clock when the council adjourned, and no allusion was made to the water works question.
